In this paper, I will discuss two different magazine articles on how to deal with bullies and two scholarly research articles. One of the research articles discusses mental health and suicide issues that may be caused from being bullied. The other article discusses how schools use different strategies that can be effective or not effective in stopping bullying.
On any given school day, 30% of American teenagers are classified as perpetrators, sufferers, or bystanders of bullying, and 3.2 million kids are on the receiving end of bullying each year (Greenya). Some kids today wake up early during the school week anticipating another day of school. To them, it’s like a home away from home that provides a safe environment to learn, interact with peers, grow up, develop a sense of self, and make impressions of how they want to be perceived in the world. Of course, there are also occasional moments of complete anxiety: a week of final exams, a nerve-wracking class presentation, or doing well in a composition class. However, for the other kids, anxiety is an everyday problem. For them, the weekend can’t arrive fast enough, and normal weekday mornings are instead filled with feelings of nausea, gloom, and dread. Some may even have thoughts of ending their life. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people’s lives are affected by this brutal form of abuse. In fact, there is an estimated “160,000 children who skip school every day to avoid bullying” (Greenya). The word “school” brings nothing except goosebumps to many students nationwide. Bullying has been around since schools themselves. However, in the recent decades, the term “bullying has gone far overhand. After all of these years of tears, cuts, and suicides, there still has been no solution. The only option we have now is, to have bullies convicted with criminal charges.
Each day school children learn valuable skills and lessons from their teachers as well as through in- tractions with their peers. Although school, undoubtedly, is beneficial to America’s youth, there are some ex- periences, such as bullying, that may negatively affect and stick with these children for the rest of their lives.
“New bullying statistics for 2010 revealed about one in seven students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade is either a bully or has been a victim of bullying” (“Bullying Statistics 2010”). How does a person detect whether someone is being bullied? “A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself” (Olweus). Bullying takes place more in middle school because they are trying to fulfill a strong need for power, fit-in with their peers, and satisfy their pain. “Fear of being excluded by peers leads to by-standing, if the teen is aware of a bullying situation and decides to stay away or not get involved” (Vassar 26). Bully victims are targeted due to their sexuality, gender, religion, disabilities, and interests. 71 percent of the victims report bullying as an on-going problem. The effects of bullying can be best understood through the types of bullying, consequences of bullying, and legal policies prohibiting all forms of bullying.
According to the MBNBD.org website, one in out of every seven kids have been bullied or are a bully and about ninty percent of kids in grades four through eighth have reported to have been bullied before. Considering these statistics, it is coherent that bullying is a major problem. Nevertheless, besides bullying other forms occur frequently such as peer pressure and other judgemental actions. Within the short story Eleven, forms of bullying and harassment were shown in which many kids experience all around the world. School victimization is an especially delicate matter that has only really been in the public eye for the past half century, as more and more researchers and psychologists pointed out its short- and long-term negative effects on targeted individuals. It has since been widely investigated and numerous programs have been developed in an effort to address and prevent the many forms of bullying that exist today. The negative effects of such an abusive behaviour are various and can greatly differ from individual to individual. However, there are three main consequences that can be associated with school bullying, which are: school avoidance, depression/anxiety and even suicidal attempts.
The topic of bullies is one that has concerned parents and schools for almost as long as schools have been around, but the real question is who should dispense with this serious dilemma of our children getting harassed the school or the parents? It is time for schools to step up to the bat and dispense of this serious problem of our children getting tormented in and out of class by other pupil. Over the past several years, it has not been uncommon to hear about bullying. Unfortunately, bullying is something that has affected the lives of millions of people around the world. Some of those people have had resolve from the bullying, and many people have not been able to reach that resolve and the effects have been emotionally scarring. According to Dictionary.com, “bullying is a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people”. Based on the definition alone, there might be a time where any individual could reflect back to when they were in school and they were witness to or victim of a bully.
