We assess our lives on a daily basis when we make decisions or while solving problems. The same process we use making life decisions can be used when deciding a career path. “Psychological type is a theory of personality developed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung to explain the normal differences between healthy people. Based on his observation, Jung concluded the differences in behavior result from people’s inborn tendencies to use their minds in different ways.” (Myers, 1998, p. 6)When we are face with a dilemma or situation our according to Jung or mind will either be taking in information (perceiving) or organizing that information and drawing a conclusion (judging). As a school counselor begins working with students to find out what their interest are as well as their skills. One will need to know how the student focus their energy. For example according to the assessments, I’m extraverted, which means I direct my energy toward the outside world. I process information based on feelings, what I hear and can see. I imagine that’s the reason why I work in a human service field. I’m always welling to help my customer based on what I feel and hear from them. Some people are introverted, they internalize information based on their ideas and experiences. Career and personality assessments could be a great way to explore career choices that maybe appropriate for a student. When helping students with career decisions, it’s important for school counselors to remember they are helpers and students have to make their own decisions. Many times students will come to the school counselor seeking answers, it’s important for the school counselor to allow students to make their own decisions. We can help them by recommending they research different careers or volunteer in fields of interest to see what skills are needed and to gain clarification what is involved in the career their thinking about. Many times students lack understanding in regards to education and experience requirements in different fields, school counselors may need to provide students with resources. For example, school counselors can organize career fairs and or bring people from different fields to speak to groups of students who have an interest in particular fields. As a school counselor when using career assessments, one should remember assessments are only tools that should be used with other sources when helping students make
I have not worked with clients in a formal counseling setting. However, I know the importance of clients taking assessments to gain a better understanding. For example, if the client is having difficulty selecting a career, I would have the client take a career assessment to determine client strengths. Then, the client can use the evaluation to research jobs that would allow the client to use their strengths.

I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. As I expand my knowledge in the different counseling approaches, my values appropriately fit in with the humanistic theoretical orientation. The career theory Integrative Life Planning (ILP) also resonates in my future ambitions as a counselor. I am very interested in working with high school and/or college students and helping them successfully prepare for their future. The holistic approach has stood out to me from the start of the program and has been useful in my personal life. My goal is to help the student/client to be able to discover their own personal motivations and self-satisfaction within them, as well as a way to benefit society. My role as a counselor is to assist the student in organizing their personal skills, work values, and career interests as a start to finding an ideal work environment. With some guidance, this will empower the student to appreciate that they have options to do what they truly enjoy. I have known many students that do not have guidance in creating a successful future. Accord to the Gates Foundation study, only 7 of 10 U.S. students are graduating within the four years they are in high school (Corbett, G. A. & Huebner, T. A.. 2007). These students do not have reason to be motivated in discovering their ambitions. The quote that inspired me in my career journey is, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” by Confucius.
Counselors have large shoes to fill. They not only administer assessments, but are also involved in group counseling, individual counseling, and have to plan and implement comprehensive school guidance programs. A counselor must know and be competent in all realms of their position. School counselors work with all children, including children with disabilities in various settings within the school (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005 p 449). As stated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school counseling services must be made available to all students in special education programs as part of their right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) (Bowen & Glenn, 1998; Clark, 1998). School counselors are to take on this role in the educational and personal-social well being of students in special education programs. Federal law does require that children, who receive special education services, and do not display appropriate behavior have a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) team (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005) p 449). This team constructs a BIP. While there are many roles that a school counselor must take on to support the students’ academic success, some of the most important ones include advocating for students and teaching them to advocate for themselves; collaborating with stakeholders to support equity, access and academic success for all students; and promoting systemic change to support an environment where every student succeeds (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2012). Advocating for students academic, social-emotional, and college and career development needs can help students achieve their success within the school environment. Further, by teaching students to advocate for their own needs helps to empower them and give them skills they can use throughout school and later in life. In addition, school counselors must collaborate with stakeholders within the school and outside of the school to provide students with various supports that can support student achievement within the school setting (ASCA, 2012). Career Counseling, or Career Services depending on the institution, is frequently offered on a one-on-one basis, but at times this service is provided through group workshops, classes, or computerized guidance systems. Traditionally a standard function of the career services role is to help students develop job search skills however the scope of the career development services has broadened considerably in recent years (Komives, Woodard, & Associates, 2003, p. 344). Career services professionals may teach resume writing, critique students' resumes and cover letters, provide resources on resume and employment letter writing, job interviewing skills, and planning job search strategies. Students may be videotaped in mock interviews so they can see themselves in action. Additionally some career services offices involve alumni, school advisory committees, or employers in critiquing resumes, conducting practice interviews, or leading workshops. Many may also offer sessions on related topics such as professional networking, proper attire, or transitioning to the work place.
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools.
