The newly proposed impaired driving laws would allow police to demand a breath sample up to two hours after you get home if you are suspected of drunk driving. These laws violate individual rights as police no longer need to have reasonable suspicion and can simply demand that you provide a breath or saliva sample that proves there is no alcohol in their system even if you have already arrived home. Though these laws appear to violate constitutional rights, they are very liberal. The main reason drunk driving laws are in effect is to protect other people on the road. The drive is making their own decision and must deal with the consequences that come along with it, however the people around them could be severely impacted by their choices. However conservatives would not be in favour of these new laws, as they can be perceived as unconstitutional. The conservatives would rather stick to what is already in place, even if it isn’t always effective. They would be strongly against the new power the laws give to police, as well as the right it gives them to accuse an individual without reasonable suspicion. A problem with these laws is that they have been passed without the input of the public. Because they are right along the line of unconstitutional, citizens should have been given the chance to vote on whether or not the law was passed. This would ensure that the wants of most people would be met, and the law would not be as controversial. The new set of liberal laws allow police to take a sample as late as two hours after you return home to ensure that you were not drunk driving. They have been questioned for being unconstitutional, however they were put forward with the intention of protecting people on the road and ensuring that the individuals that make the choice to drink and drive are prosecuted accordingly with little to no room for
