Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Born a peasant girl in Domremy, France on January 6, 1412, Saint Joan of Arc worked on a farm with her family (http://www2.lhric.org/pocantico/womenenc/joanarc.htm). At the age of 13, Joan began to hear voices, which she determined had been sent by God to give her a mission of overwhelming importance: to save France by expelling its enemies, and to install Charles as its rightful king (http://www.history.com/topics/saint-joan-of-arc). At such a young age, Joan was showing courage by accepting the callings from God to help lead France to victory which was later named the Hundred Years’ War. Joan was determined, persistent, and focused. After being rejected by the local magistrate, Robert de Baudricourt, she persisted, and led the 11-day journey across enemy territory to Chinon, site of the crown prince’s palace (http://www.history.com/topics/saint-joan-of-arc). What didn’t kill her, made her stronger. She took it to the next level and even changed her own appearance for the benefit of others. Joan of Arc was only 13 years old when she started to receive messages from spiritual figures inspiring her to go to war. The typical 13 year old would be frightened by these messages and ignore them, but not Joan of Arc. She was not the typical teenager, at age 18 she already led the French army to victory over the British at Orléans (http://www.biography.com/people/joan-of-arc-9354756). With the help of her pious mother, Joan of Arc was so deeply devoted to the Catholic faith, and fulfilled the messages with her whole heart and soul. A trait that Joan of Arc obtained that goes unseen was her ability to overcome her circumstances and not become a product of her environment.
