The topic I chose is Safety and Health in the Workplace. I chose this topic because the working people need to be safe where they work and when they are safe they are healthy. They are able to make money to support their family or loved ones with ease. If their workplace is not safe they could end up using the money they make to pay their medical bills or they could be fired. The people who work around the world are already large in number and continuously increasing. While there are a number of those workers who die from injuries at work or contract a disease from a fellow worker and spread it farther than it should have spread. Although there has been a decline in work related injuries and deaths there are still people who are dying from …show more content…
Women get more health benefits when they are working like health insurance and prenatal education but will not receive such benefits when they are not working. Workers who live in under privileged countries have higher amounts of work related deaths than workers who live in affluent countries. Those who work in heavy industries like construction or logging have higher fatality rates. Those working in agricultural jobs such as farming are at risk of injuries and more including skin diseases and respiratory diseases. Farming machinery such as tractors rolling over is also a contributor to farm fatalities. Unintentional injuries are not the only source of work injuries or fatalities. Violence is another source leading to injury or death in a workplace. Working at night, with or around money or alone can increase the risk of workplace violence. Diseases and illnesses are also a problem to workers specifically workers in certain occupations like mining, glass manufacturing and asbestos workers. With all of these dangers of working the need for safety and health professionals and prevention programs vastly
The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN’s) goal is to prepare future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that are needed to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. QSEN focuses on six main competencies; patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. As we have learned in earlier classes these competencies and their KSAs offer a base to help us and other nurses as we continue our education and become RNs. As we will learn in this class these KSAs go hand in hand with health assessment.
2011 Weigel and Armijos 2011). “Little empirical data are available examining the injury experience of hired crop workers in the United States (US).”(Wang, Myers et al. 2011) Work-related injury data from a national survey collected through the National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS) in the years 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004 on 13,604 crop farm workers revealed that the bulk of injuries occurred to male (84%) and Mexican born (72%) workers. “The use of hand tools, falls, and lifting overexertion injuries were identified as significant causes of injury among hired crop workers. Increased injury risk was also seen for crop workers with existing health or musculoskeletal complaints....
Working on a farm or in a factory has both similarities and differences, but moving from a rural to a city job could be quite difficult. Farm and factory jobs are similar because they are dangerous and require intense physical labor. Both the farm and factory jobs have daily hazards. In 2009, farming continues to be the most dangerous job in the United States, due to the constant risk of animal stampedes or agricultural machinery accidents. In factories, like Grede Foundries, ear and eye protection against deafening crashes and flying sparks is required, as well as having all skin covered to prevent from hot metal burns. However, the most noticeable similarity is the amount of physical labor needed in both Wauwatosa and Elkhorn workplaces to produce the goods sold. One example of this in history is five year old Salvin from Brown’s Mills, New Jersey. In 1910, this young boy labored in the fields, becoming weak from lugging two pecks of cranberries at a time in extreme heat. Similar physical labor is demanded of factory workers in United States history, causing numerous health problem...
The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides an annual count of fatal work injuries in the United States, including workplace homicides. From 2006 to 2010, an average of 551 workers per year were killed as a result of work-related homicides. In 2010 (the last year for which final data are available), CFOI reported a total of 518 workplace homicides, or 11 percent of all fatal work injuries that occurred that year. A total of 77 of those were multiple-fatality homicide incidents in which two or more workers were killed, including 69 homicides and 8 assailant suicides, all of whom were in work status at the time of the incident. These figures have been brought into public view due to recent tragedies around the country such as Sandy Hook Elementary School (2012), Virginia Tech (2007), and Fort Hood (2007).
My chosen topic is minimum wages increasing in the United States. This topic came from the idea from the news. It was brought up in the discussion. This topic was interesting because I work at a retail store in New Jersey. The wages in New Jersey are seven dollars and twenty five cents. In 2014 it will be a dollar up so it is going to be tough because prices will rise. This topic affects me because now I worked as a minimum wage worker so I get pay by an hour. If the wages rise then something will decrease and increase.
Opponents of the garment industry argue that factory owners do not ensure health and safety regulations in these factories. Most of the garment factories are not built suitably, and workers are forced to work in harsh conditions. However, some writers argue that workers seem to prefer working in a factory over working in their previous jobs on the farm or construction sites where they would work in the sun for 14 hours a day. Low levels of work safety pose a massive problem. Between 2000 and 2013, more than 1,500 lives perished in garment industrial disasters caused by fire, building collapses or stampedes. Fire exits must be available and basic training should be obliged.
The topic I chose is Air Pollution. New York City is greatly affected by air pollution since it is such a major environmental threat. This environmental threat contributes to approximately six percent of annual deaths and some studies even show air pollution to be a cause of strokes. Although it is difficult to improve the quality of New York’s air due to the air pollutants that come from millions of sources, it is important that this problem stays under control for the health of the people. Found in the Administrative Code of the City of New York, are the detailed collection of the codified local laws of New York City. This code organizes
Safety is a primary concern in the health care environment, but there are still many preventable errors that occur. In fact, a study from ProPublica in 2013 found that between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year suffer preventable harm in the hospital (Allen, 2013). Safety in the healthcare environment is not only keeping the patient safe, but also the employee. If a nurse does not follow procedure, they could bring harm to themselves, the patient, or both. Although it seems like such a simple topic with a simple solution, there are several components to what safety really entails. Health care professionals must always be cautious to prevent any mishaps to their patients, especially when using machines or lifting objects, as it has a higher
The word safety has many different meanings depending on the person and on the subject at hand. The simple dictionary definition is, “the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.” There is a much deeper meaning to the word safety. Someone can play things safely in a risky situation, be at a place of safety, be with someone who makes them feel safe, and much more. The word safety to me is resembled in a sigh of relief.
Oliver’s Safety Most children have the privilege to live in a secure and safe home all of their life. Oliver Twist, a British orphan affected by the British poor laws, does not have this opportunity. In the novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver learns the hard way on how to find safety. He finally feels like he belongs with only a few individuals. The theme, safety and security, are shown several times through Fagin, Mr. Brownlow, and Mrs. Maylie.
The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies relevant to HIV an injectable drug use includes safety, evidence-based practice, teamwork and collaboration and patient-centered care. Patient centered care is when the nurse recognizes the patient as a partner in providing care based on respect for their preferences, values, and needs. The nurse implements patient-centered care when providing care the community by basing the care off of what the patients state is needed, such as providing financial resources for those in the community who are unable to grasp resources. Teamwork and collaboration is vital to patient treatment.
It is critical to know how to handle the situation you could be in when you are involved in a crash. If you handle everything correctly, it will make a monumental difference as to what may happen to you and / or the other person involved. It will make a just as big of a difference as to what may happen to you and / or the other person involved if you handle everything incorrectly. There was a crash summary posted in 2016 by the Department of Public Safety and the results were shocking. In that year alone, there were a total of 62,471 crashes recorded.
Public safety covers a wide variety of people and organizations, but carries one common theme and that is, the public’s safety. This course has broadened my knowledge on the many roles that make the public safety sector go around and the role the public plays in it as well. My thoughts before the course were close minded and to the point. I quickly realized that policing is not as cut and dry as I once portrayed it to be. Society is always changing and adapting, and it is the job of the those in public safety to adapt and change with it. The mindset that I grew up with, in rural Saskatchewan, was the police are good people and you will only need to deal with them if you break the law or see someone break the law. My answers in the module 1 survey reflected my upbringing. My first thought for
The most common workplaces for younger workers are fast food restaurants, grocery stores, offices, and gas stations. Hazards that are most common in fast food restaurants include hot grills, fire, cooking grease, heavy lifting, cleaning chemicals, stress, steam, hot ovens, knives, slippery floors, and a pressure to work fast. Most common hazards in a grocery store include heavy lifting, meat slicers, repetitive motion, long periods of standing, box cutters, cleaning chemicals, bending, reaching, and stress. Most common hazards in an office include repetitive use of a keyboard, awkward posture, stress, cluttered workplace, copier, and other chemicals. Lastly, common hazards at a gas station include gasoline, heat, cold, stress, chemicals, tools and equipment, and an exposure to violence. These are only hazards among the most common workplaces young workers work in but other workplace industries could be manufacturing, construction, transportation, and
Accidents occur in the workplace but in secret. These most of the time lead to physical and mental injuries that might affect the worker way of living for the rest of their lives. It is estimated that more than 337 million workers get injured in their place of work or in the course of work every year leading to work-related diseases causing about 2.3 million deaths per year (United States Department of Labor, n.d.).
