How does sacrificing developmental skills in young children between the ages of three and five effect their long-term educational progress?
This question interest me because my four and a half year old will be starting preschool in two weeks, currently he is with a baby sitter during the day at her house. After searching for the right preschool for him and seeing children younger than him there made me question if I should have started him in preschool sooner. With so many interests in early childhood development, I believe there will be a lot of information on this topic. This topic is my first topic of choice because of how close the topic effects my family. I am very interested to read all the information I will find through my research.

Children who participate in quality early learning programs tend to be more successful later in school. They are also most socially and emotionally competent. In addition those children show higher verbal and intellectual development during early childhood than children who do not participate in early learning programs (A Parent’s Guide to Choosing Quality Child Care). In order for a child care center to be a quality center they must have an educated staff, a program accreditation, and good health and safety practices. Parents choose high quality child care for many reasons. These programs prepare children for school in which they gain intellectual and social skills. Also the programs are a good opportunity for children because they receive age-appropriate learning materials and activities to let the children learn and grow.

Wellness is imperative to a healthy life. Sometimes, people do not really consider what makes up wellness, they simply think of it as being “well”. Wellness may be a state of being “well”, however, it incorporates different areas such as nutrition, health, safety, nurturing, and emotional stability. I would have to say while I worried about my kids in child care as infants I was more worried about them as three-year olds than I was when they were infants. Everyone that ever cared for my kids besides myself when my children were infants loved babies so there was never any doubt or question as to their safety or level of care. I would have to say even as a mother of five kids, I have still learned a great deal Lifespan Human Development thus far. My youngest will be turning 3 this coming November and I will be putting him in Headstart as soon as I am able to however, with his birthday being in late November I will not be able to until the following year right before he turns 4. As of right now my current choice is Headstart because all of my kids have gone to Headstart and it was great for them, and also because full day Headstart so that I can focus on my studies is a lot cheaper than a lot of the daycares or preschools I have looked at in the past. My older kids currently attend a school that offers half day preschool at a rate of $600 a month, they offer Montessori Method schooling, however this is well above my price range and with it being only half day not very feasible. Researchers have concluded that preschool allows children to excel, and fully prepares these individuals for Kindergarten. Other studies have shown evidence that preschool hampers social development if a child is enrolled before they are emotionally or mentally prepared. The option for affordable, government funded preschool needs to be available to parents if they so choose. The needs of every individual child are best known by the parents themselves, making the decision the parents responsibility.
