He was not a president that would draw much attention to the public eye. He was however one of the presidents that had a great triumph over a major U.S. problem, economics and civil rights following a war. The United States was just coming out of the Civil War and was in need of a new president. They were in need of one that could lead them into a booming economic system, start the process of paying off the national debt, and show them the benefits of a nation-wide unification of the North and the South.

Benjamin Harrison was born to a Presbyterian family on Aug. 20, 1833, on his grandfather's farm in North Bend, Ohio. He was named for his great-grandfather, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the 9th president. Ben was the second of the 10 children of John Scott Harrison and Elizabeth Irwin Harrison. Harrison attended Farmers' College in a Cincinnati suburb for three years. While a freshman, he met his future wife, Caroline Lavinia Scott. Harrison and "Carrie" Scott were married in 1853. They had two children, Russell Benjamin and Mary. One year before their marriage, he graduated with distinction from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1854, Harrison passed the bar exam and moved to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis, he practiced law and campaigned for the Republican Party. In 1860, he was elected reporter of the Indiana Supreme Court. A deeply religious man, Harrison taught Sunday school. He became a deacon of the Presbyterian Church in 1857, and was elected the elder of the church in 1861.

He was in office less than four months when President Garfield was fatally shot by a disappointed office seeker. His Vice President, Chester A. Arthur, succeeded him.

During Theodore Roosevelt's presidency he was very involved in the construction and the funding of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was a man made river between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. But before they could start the canal there was a problem with Yellow Fever and Maleria so they had to spray to make all the bugs and yellow fever disappear.Then they began digging and made the first man made river. The reasoning for them doing this is so they didn't have to travel all the way around and they now had a easy way from Pacific to Atlantic Oceans. Theodore Roosevelt also negotiated a peace treaty between Russia and Japan. The Japanese were the one to ask Roosevelt if they would help them make a peace treaty between them and Russia. Roosevelt was worried if he did not go through with helping with th peace treaty and then Russia won that they would shut off U.S trade with Manchuria. Then if Japan won he was worried it would threaten their free trade in Asia. In return of the negotiation Theodore Roosevelt won the 1906 Nobel Peace
