Running The Front End
Day after day, I work at Home Depot. I’ve worked at Home Depot for 6 months. My position there is a cashier. A few months have gone by and all I do is show up and do my job as a cashier. The cashiers have someone who runs the front end along with every register in the store, and that person is a head ashier. After what I see the head cashiers go through, I would never want to be a head cashier for the rest of my life.
After four and a half months of working, I am just getting the hang of it. Being a cashier might sound easy, but over at Home Depot, it’s not. There are so many responsibilities for a cashier to do; it is just as hard as being a bank teller. You have to be quick at looking up items, being familiar with items in the store, checking every item for the right tag, and the list goes on. The cashiers are tested weekly with a secret shopper to make sure the cashiers are on their toes. The money has to be added up at the end of the day, each slip, coin, dollar bill, check and card. If it doesn’t add up, you don’t leave until you find out where it went. The cashier draw cannot hold more then 500$ at one time. Each time you collect up to five hundred you have to send it to the book keeping. All these responsibilities add up and are overwhelming for a cashier. A head cashier is responsible for every register and transaction in that store, along with the flow of lines and customer satisfaction. It is a job I would never want.
Coming into work one day, I knew something was wrong. When I saw long lines forming down each Isle, people complaining that the wait was too long, and register lights flashing for help. There were no head cashiers available or supervisors who knew anything about the front end. At that time I was the only cashier who had been there the longest, so I was asked to try and be head cashier for the day. I did, and I knew what I was getting myself into.
I was handed a set of keys and I was in charge of the entire front end. This was a job I had never done or been trained to do, It started out fine no one had any problems Three hours passed, and I ran into my first problem.
However, I ended up getting hired at the Walmart distribution center, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Although we still have to live paycheck to paycheck, we can now manage to pay the bills and put food on the table without as much stress as before.
Having those fellow co workers that bring you down, the ungodly amount of hours you have to work, and at time just the job in itself can be the reason that you have a horrible attitude about working. Find a job that you know you will enjoy doing, because doing that boring job in the end will do nothing but give you a bad attitude about the rest of the working
Once I had finished some computer work, which was the last part of my training, I reported to the night time shift manager to confirm with them that I was indeed done with training. Most of the time the cashier working at the place will treat the customer like complete garbage and not showing any concern for them. They often go through their routine of “Have a good day” when most of them could care less about how the rest of the customers day really goes. Squidward is always treating the customer awful. Squidward has lied to the customers and has said some nasty words to the customers. He has denied customers items such as salt and ice cubes. Squidward has also fallen asleep on the job many times which is disrespectful to the customer. All of these things Squidward has done, is something that the average fast food cashier is accustom to. The first reason that new employees who work at stores are annoying is because they are not aware of their surrounding of the store. For instance, the employees do not know around the stores so they cannot help us. The employee also cannot point out where things are and it takes much longer. Also, if the employees do not know the building, then they still want to help the customer by taking them around the whole store to get them something. Lastly, in the store, there would be only one new employee for that department, and if the shopper asked them something, they would respond, “Sorry, I Cannot help, I am new” to the buyer. Now the customer has no one to ask, and this is bad service. Clearly, having new store employees at a store is very frustrating. Not only are having new store workers frustrating, but also having people walk violent dogs in public.
Retail work is best known for low pay, difficult customers, and long shifts. Although this is at times true, retail work can teach people valuable lessons and skills that are used on and off the job. As a Sears sales associate, I spent my last summer working in retail, enduring both tiresome hours and demanding buyers.
