Retail work is best known for low pay, difficult customers, and long shifts. Although this is at times true, retail work can teach people valuable lessons and skills that are used on and off the job. As a Sears sales associate, I spent my last summer working in retail, enduring both tiresome hours and demanding buyers. Through this experience, I learned tricks and skills that are useful to survive a job in retail. The most important word of advice on how to manage a job in retail is to take care of yourself first. In order to succeed at your job, it is vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Retail work requires employees to be on their feet for long hours. It is necessary to stay hydrated and wear comfortable shoes during a rigorous shift. It is also essential to always take your breaks, no matter how busy the floor is. Working in retail can be hectic. You are constantly interacting with others. Breaks allow not only time for yourself but also time to unwind from stressful situations. To sustain a healthy lifestyle, one must maintain a work and home balance. It is crucial to not bring work home after a shift is over. Brittany Lonadier, who has been working in retail for over a year, wrote an article on the website Odyssey saying, “If you leave work stressing …show more content…
The saying, “the customer is always right” isn’t always necessarily true. Most of the time, the sales associated is correct. However, it is still important to treat costumers with respect, even when they are wrong. Another important skill to have in order to survive retail is to remain patient with costumers. It can be frustrating when a customer messes up a display or leaves clothes on the dressing room floor. Dealing with grumpy customers can also be challenging. Nonetheless, a worker must remain calm and accept that the job entails sometimes dealing with difficult situations and
From the employees’ perspective; they are managed someone with experience in their same specialty who can effectively understand and review their work. Furthermore, they can move up within organization, which gives a reason for them to be loyal to the job. They also have the opportunity to work with others in their field, which allows for knowledge sharing and learning new skills. From the managers’ perspectives; this would make their jobs easier and makes them able to supervise the individual’s performance of their team members to distribute recognition, rewards and punishments accordingly. This has created an environment that hugely corresponds with Target’s core strategy, differentiation. Many of the shoppers have expressed their satisfaction with the services that provided by Target and more specifically with how friendly the staff

According to Williams, a renewed commitment to the values of the citizen consumer is necessary to bring about changes in the retail industry. She said that the political economy of shopping must change and that the retail industry must be reined in by new legislation mandating worker rights to living wages, health care, and equal opportunities. I think that what she says is true. The whole retail system need revamped to take in the consideration of the workers, and until the consumers start to realize this and demand changes, nothing will change.
From the perspective of the retail employee, the world is always ending. The store is always a mess and the customers are always rude. There have been countless stories and memes about the types of customers that retail workers have had to deal with, whether it is the “Can I speak to a manager?” haircut, obnoxious prepubescent
Once the first shopper sets foot into the store, the place becomes a mess. Not thinking of the hard effort put into cleaning the night before to get every shirt folded and every other item back on the shelf neatly, the customer, as if they are a little kid touches every single thing. Shirts are tossed into one big pile on each table, and everything seems to be found on the floor once again. Also in the fitting rooms, shoppers try on every item they know they aren’t going to fit into, and don’t bother to put anything back where they found it. When the workers start to pick up the mess and hang what was left behind, for some odd reason there are always at least 5shirts without any hangers.
Old Navy is an American clothing and accessories company owned by the corporation Gap Inc. As holiday season approaches, retail stores such as Old Navy hire thousands of seasonal workers to keep speed with the millions of shoppers who are expected to hit the stores during the holiday season. Nearly two days after applying, I got called for an interview then hired for the seasonal position, this not only made me realize that this opening will lead me to gain some experience in retail, but also made me realize that in a way I will be joining a new community and will be part of a team that strives to create an environment that is functional enough
First, when shopping, a big factor that will impact a customer 's experience is the customer service. Whether it’s from a simple “hello”, or an employee going out
Store managers were responsible for the grocery line, front-end department and general store operations but had little knowledge about merchandising, meat and produce. Instead, their duties included cleanliness of store, employee appearance, and sufficient checkout service and price accuracy. Store managers wanted to be trained in management skills to allow them opportunity for promotion to higher positions of district and regional management. With the original structure, store managers operation activities actually prevented them from learning these skills, such as merchandising. Frustration ran high with the store managers as the district store supervisors only focused store visits to assure that company operating standards were being practices, instead of training store managers to run their stores more efficiently.
Even the slowdown in current global economies could not bring retail sector down as retailers keep seeking for opportunities overseas to avoid challenging economic condition, which make this sector becoming more globalised and competitive. As an heir of an industrial components retailer, I also believe there are bountiful opportunities to grow in this emerging industry. But without deeply and truly understanding in every aspect of retailing, one could not survive in the battle. For this reason, I would like to pursue my education further by studying Master in retail management to obtain knowledge in retailing and hopefully become successful in the field.
During my work experience at , I was fortunate enough to have experienced firsthand and learned, many different sides of what goes into a project, the general process of how a project is initially planned, developed and completed; as well as how much work and detail goes into every stage. Another valuable lesson I have learned during these 12 weeks, were the many different types of work an Engineer has to perform, which in turn, have provided me with more insight into the different types of roles and responsibilities that I could perform, as a Civil Engineer.
Around Christmas time all people have a different way we like to go about shopping. Some like to stay in the comfort of their own home. While others like to save every little penny they can and some shoppers like to get in and out of the store as fast as possible. There are three types of holiday shoppers, the online shoppers, the bargain shoppers, and last but not least the man on a mission.
... have to be combined to create one big idea and this is where group dynamics comes into play. Employees have to be interpersonal with each other and trust one another's opinions in order to move together as a team when promoting the retailer's brand as one whole. It goes without saying that as technology develops, the retail industry will innovate and emerge with new sectors, brands, products, and services to provide for the growing needs of consumers and the emerging economy. There will always be an increase in emerging themes as the priorities of consumers change from one generation to another. Lastly, the most important thing that I would take with me to work experience is the motivation and encouraging; I will constantly encourage any of my team members when they require it and give them good constructive feedback that they can later implement into their work.
