Liberation theology was considered both a radical and political movement in Roman Catholic Theology. It proposes the fight of poverty and goes in depth into the relationship of Christian theology and political activism. It interpreted Jesus’ teachings in relation to liberation through economic, political and social conditions. Liberation Theology spoke on how the Christian church should act in order to bring social change as well as support itself with the working group. It also explains how the church should be a movement for people who were denied their rights which resulted in poverty and being stripped of human beings. Liberation theology also caused up rise in which many important people involved in Christianity did not approve of it.
The biggest organization who played a role in the creation of liberation theology was the Latin American Episcopal Council which was made up of Roman Catholic bishops in Latin America. In 1968, CELAM created the Medellin Conference in Columbia were they officially announced their support of Liberation theology. They disputed how to apply the Vatican II teachings in Latin America, which was strongly influenced by liberation theology. Shortly after, the Medellin document caused liberation theology to develop rapidly in the Latin American Catholic Church, even though it was scowled upon by the Vatican, in which Pope Paul VI tried to slow the movement. With liberation theology gaining rapid support in South America, CELAM hosted the Puebla Conference in Mexico in 1979. During the conference the orthodox bishops were given a change to regain control of the radical elements, but failed. The problem of reconciling an omnipotent, perfectly just, perfectly benevolent god with a world full of evil and suffering has plagued believers since the beginning of religious thought. Atheists often site this paradox in order to demonstrate that such a god cannot exist and, therefore, that theism is an invalid position. Theodicy is a branch of philosophy that seeks to defend religion by reconciling the supposed existence of an omnipotent, perfectly just God with the presence of evil and suffering in the world. In fact, the word “theodicy” consists of the Greek words “theos,” or God, and “dike,” or justice (Knox 1981, 1). Thus, theodicy seeks to find a sense of divine justice in a world filled with suffering.
In Montgomery Gentry’s hit song “Where I Come From”, he sings about his small town southern pride. In this country tune, the line “That little white church is gonna have a crowd,” is accompanied by lyrics about a town that could easily be located in East Tennessee. One thing that can be assumed from Gentry’s song is that the, “Little white church” he sings about is probably not a Catholic cathedral. In southern towns, like the one Gentry sings about, Protestant churches drastically outrank Catholic churches. In Kingsport Tennessee, Catholic churches are outnumbered forty two to one by Baptist churches alone. This statistic makes it easy to see why, as a whole, Protestants are uneducated and overly critical about the Catholic faith, the very religion that Protestantism is derived.
Black liberation theology has made valuable contributions, both positive and negative, to theological discussion today. To some extent, it has situated in political struggles and movements like the U.S. civil rights movement, human rights movements against Latin American dictatorships, and feminist movements in other regions of the globe.
Although the term black liberation theology is fairly new, becoming popular in the early 1960’s with Black Theology and Black Power, a book written by James H. Cone, its ideas are pretty old, which can be clearly seen in spirituals sang by Africans during the time of slavery nearly 400 years ago. # It was through these hymns that black liberation spawned. Although Cone is given credit for “the discovery of black liberation theology,” it’s beliefs can quite clearly be seen in the efforts of men like preacher Nat Turner and his rebellion against slavery in the mid 1800’s or Marcus Garvey, one of the first men to “see God through black spectacles” in the early 1900’s. More recently, black theology emerged as a formal discipline. Beginning with the "black power" movement in 1966, black clergy in many major denominations began to reassess the relationship of the Christian church to the black community.
The practices of The Catholic Church during the sixteenth century caused a monk named Martin Luther to question The Church’s ways. Luther watched as families suffered physically, emotionally and economically by the hands of The Church. Luther saw no basis for The Church to charge people for their sins or prevent them from learning to read The Bible themselves. He watched as the money built up The Palace, yet tore apart the fundamental and spiritual reasons one goes to church in the first place. In an effort to change the practices of The Church, he wrote the 95 Thesis. In these, he stated his views on the abuses of The Church. This was the beginning of a large movement that would change religious practices over the world.

Gonzalez opens up this book with the “Call for Reformation,” where he shares with his readers the need for reform; the papacy had started to decline and was corrupt, in addition to the Great Schism, which had further weakened the papacy (p.8). Liberation theology is the school of thought that explores the relationship between Christian theology and political activism usually of a Marxist orientation with using theology of salvation as liberation from injustice. Liberation theology focuses the unjust of political, economic and social conditions. For Guyanese politics, liberation theology was not used in that sense especially for the PNC it was used as a tactic to gain voters and control the government of Guyana. The theory of liberation theology was first introduced in the 1968 elections.
In Western Christianity, the “theology” of Dispensationalism is achieving unheard of popularity. However with examination one can see the many cultural and biblical problems this theology has. Ultimately this theology isn’t just unbiblical, it is dangerous.

Following the Industrial Revolution in 19th century Europe, change was in full swing and religion began to have different meanings for different people. The upper-class citizens used Religion, namely Christianity, and the power that it possessed in an attempt to keep their high status in society, while the lower class turned to faith so that their lives could possibly improve. Instead of religion being the cornerstone of faith and worship amongst all people, it was being used for power and money by the upper class. Even worse, religious leaders were using the upper class people as well, gaining money and authority from their endorsement. A man by the name of Karl Marx saw what was happening and thus spoke out about it, declaring religion as “the opium of the people.”[1] He had a vision for equality, and wrote it down in the form of the Communist Manifesto; however nowhere in this document were aspirations of religious harmony. Religion was becoming the catalyst for class separation and social mayhem in 19th century Europe, and according to Karl Marx, equality was only possible with the abolition of it as a whole.

Liberation theology originated in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s in South Africa. Liberation theology started because poor people of South Africa were being subjected to harsh treatments by those of higher authority, because the poor were oppressed they decided that it was finally time for them stand up for themselves and voice their opinion for themselves. The oppressed poor people were forced to deal with the lack of food supply, the lack of shelters, the lack of education and medical care.
