Life is What We Make of it Life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself. Everyone has a purpose that is different from one another and that purpose is the goal they strive to achieve. On the road to achieve that goal, there may be physical or mental blocks which make the individual fail, however, the important part is they learn from that mistake and get up and succeed. This is the determining factor of life, because in the words of Elizabeth Bishop in her literary work “One Art,” “The art of losing isn’t hard to master;”(570). This quotation means that everyone, every day, and everywhere experiences loss whether it is little things like losing house keys or bigger things like losing a loved one. With a pessimistic disposition, failure is inevitable. The dull pencils represent the premeditated notions about taking the class. By thinking about failure before the individual has started is only putting obstacles in their path and setting them up for failure. For example, most people have difficulties with mathematics and in order to get a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology, calculus is a requirement course. Most students question why calculus is needed for a science major and take the class with reservations. Before they have even entered the classroom, they don’t want to be there, setting themselves up for failure. Pastan believes that notions of failure turns into failure itself and only the individual would be able to change their pencils from dull to sharp. With these students who enter a course which they do not enjoy, they most likely do the bare minimum for that class. Meanwhile, right before a test they reach for the textbook they have not opened all semester in order to “study.” This is what Pastan was referring to. The book is only as useful as you make it. Only using it once would be failure. Using it multiple times throughout the semester, there is a much greater chance of succeeding. In fact, he/she needs to involve with general reading and the writing skills. Culpepper also states in his composition “The Myth of Inferiority”: “…students who write beautifully but fail to say anything of substance, and students who can hardly read, much less write clearly or think critically” (Culpepper 330). Therefore, to achieve academic success, the student has to prepare for the course in which he/she will attend. Moreover, if the course is too superior to the student’s level, he/she might commit plagiarized compositions, delayed works, or other unacceptable sins, causing him/her to fail the
A major fallacy in this reading is Slippery Slope. As a Princeton freshman states, "it's just so easy, and the class was a waste of time, anyway." Well maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Some students might think the class is difficult. It might even be an important class to them.
Most students go through high school trying to just get to graduation day. They just want to pass all their classes, nothing higher. Only a small percentage of students in high school actually have the determination to excel and be above average on their own. Most people need someone to inspire them to excel. The essay "Tracking" by Mike Rose discusses how he needed someone to point out to him that he shouldn't be in Vocational classes. He put into a whole new different situation, and the classes could actually be a challenge for him. Being a mediocre student are apart of most students lives because they don't push themselves to be better.
Student expect professors to teach them everything they need to know that relates to their future, otherwise it’s boring and useless, and they don’t care to learn about it. Or they need the material they are learning to be presented in a way that’s more appealing to them; but Gutting’s believes that professors shouldn’t have to make the material more interesting for the students, the students should want to learn about the subject and be interested in the material itself, without the professor having to make it interesting. Which brings me to my third point. As a result of these disengaged students, they only take time to study for what they need to pass the class, and not study to learn more and in depth about things. Which I think is kind of sad and true. I chose to go to college to help create my future, so I only study things that benefit towards my career in college, I don’t really branch out past what I need to know. Because why would I want to do extra work? We shouldn’t just be studying the material to help us pass the class we should be studying the material because we want to learn about it and know more about the subject, and it’s something that we find interesting. The children see failure as not being as smart as everyone tells them they are or simply stating the wrong answer to a question the teacher asks (Lahey). From creating this fear of failing comes the hatred of learning. Kids are beginning to learn that “mistakes are something to avoid” and as a result you have students who “are afraid to take risks, to be creative, [and] to be wrong” because they associate being wrong as being a failure (Tugend). Kids understand that mistakes will happen, and from these mistakes you should learn, but are being taught to try to avoid mistakes because it is too big of a risk for their grades and also other students and parent’s views of them. For example, in high-school students have the choice to take general, honors, or advanced placement classes. In the past, more and more students would take the advanced placement classes, which were a lot harder than honors and general and could possibly make lower grades than they would make in the other classes, but would be constantly challenged and learning more than they would in the honors and general classes. In today’s society, more students are being encouraged by their parents and peers to settle for the honors and even general classes, so they can guarantee acceptable grades and not have to try too hard to make those grades. The meaning of life is to find the meaning of life. Is it not? We all go through each day trying to figure out which road out the infinite amount of paths will lead us in a better direction where happiness is prominent and society is flawless. However, not every single human being is going to fit on that narrow, one-lane highway to success. Bad choices, accidents, fate, family matters, society, temptation, anger, rage, addiction, and loss of hope can all be deciding factors in opting to choose that wrong path to self-destruction. The adverse thing is, once you've traveled so far down the road, you get so discouraged that you feel like you can never turn back or make up for the "lost time."
American poet and short story writer Elizabeth Bishop lived between February 8, 1911- October 6, 1979. She won many awards such as The Pulitzer Prize, The National Book award, and The Neustadt International Prize for literature in 1976. Bishop was said to work obsessively on her poems and would spend years perfecting them. Two out of the many poems she wrote were “One Art”( a poem about a woman who says we can master the art of losing), and “The Waiting Room” (A speaker describing her experience as a young girl reading the National Geographic magazine, taking place on February 1918). Elizabeth implicitly used the two poems to demonstrate how people are connected through their own vulnerability.
For majority of life I’ve gone through the motions and have done as I have been told to do. Naïve and ignorant to how amazing life really is and refusing to question how things work or what my true purpose is other then surviving. For centuries there have been numerous philosophers to question what our purpose is and have developed different theories to help us get as close as we possibly can to finding the meaning of life. One thing I’ve learned since opening my eyes to the reality of the world is that in our lifetime the closest thing we will have is theories and ideas but we will never know the true meaning of life.
