Black is beautiful. Skinny is beautiful. A lack of knowledge is beautiful. The world that we live in is indulged with the concept of what people find beautiful. From the color of skin to the idea of what weight is the most attractive, we have taught ourselves to judge others based upon what we believe is ideal. This concept varies across the world, as is discussed within the novel Scheherazade Goes West, as well as within different upbringings and cultures, as discussed in Adios Barbie. This essay discusses the ideal American body - meaning perfect weight, skin, hair color, etc. - all of what appears in a typical fashion magazine. Rodriguez, an eighteen-year-old Latina writes of her past in middle school. One day she found an ad stating that a model search contest was coming to Beverly Hills, only a two-hour drive from her hometown. Having always to fit in with her peers, she begged her parents to take her so she could show the agency that she had what it takes. After attending, she received a call stating that she was a runner-up in the competition and her parents beamed, enrolling her in modeling and acting courses. However, she was told that being a size seven and weighing 130 pounds, she needed to lose weight fast and drop down to the typical size three that the other models were. She was handed magazines such as Seventeen as motivation for what “real models look like.” This is an example of a binary present in America, which states that in order to be model material you have to be skinny and blond. Leaving depressed, she grew determined and decided to lose as much weight as she could, still knowing that she came from a line of wide-hipped Hispanic women. She soon developed a routine where all she did was work out and eat one meal a day, thus developing a severe eating disorder. This is yet another binary present in the US, that girls of color don’t develop eating disorders. Now, to break the binary, she goes to conferences and is a peer advocate to girls everywhere, speaking about what she learned and how powerful the media truly is for teens around the
Every woman grows up knowing that they one day want to be beautiful. In Marge Piercy’s “Barbie Doll” she gives an in depth look at what negative effects the concept of beauty can have on an individual. From infancy to a full grown adult woman, beauty has been a way of thinking and lifestyle. As a little girl you are given petite shaped, blonde, blue eyed dolls. While boys are given brawny soldiers and mechanical toys.
The female body image and what a person should, or could, look like in marketing and advertising is a controversial topic. Beauty sells and is to some extent a problem when the media produces images for women that seem unrealistic. Body image is a critical mental health issue for young girls. It is a concern widespread among women of color, specifically among Latinas. Increasing diversity and perceptions of beauty have driven the need for dialogue on the scrutiny Latinas face across all industries regarding their bodies and appearance.
The ideal female beauty in American culture is predominately white (Bankhead & Johnson, 2014). Throughout U.S history, women’s mainstream beauty ideal has been historically based on white standards such as having blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin, a thin ideal body, straight hair, and thin lips (West, 1995; Yamamiya, Cash, Melynk, Posavac, & Posavac, 2005; Leslie, 1995). Therefore, the features of African American women tend to be viewed as undesirable and unattractive compared to the European standards of beauty (Awad, Norwood, Taylor, Martinez, McClain, Jones, Holman, & Hilliard, 2014). According to Ashe (1995), “African beauty, body and hair have been racialized, with slim/”keen” European features being the accepted standard of beauty since enslaved Africans was forcefully brought to the Americas.” The physical characteristics of Black women such as having broad noses, brown skin, full lips, large buttocks and course hair has been looked down upon throughout United States history (Byrd & Tharps, 2001). In effect, the standard of beauty of European features that were forced on slaves are internalized and currently seen in the standard of beauty of African Americans (A.A) (Chapman, 2007). The media can impact people’s lives in many ways, whether it’s fashion, movies, literature, or hobbies. One of the impacts is how women view their bodies. Movie stars and models feel pressured to catch attention and to look good in order to have a good career in their respective field. People tend to judge how someone looks based on their body composition. The result of this “judgment” is that Hollywood is getting skinny. Since models and actresses serve as role models for people, people tend to want to look like them. The result of this seemingly harmless model of behavior is in an increase in eating disorders.
What is beauty? How do human beings decide who is attractive and who is not? Society is full of messages telling us what is beautiful, but what are those definitions based on? Do we consciously decide whom we are attracted to, or is biology somehow involved? The issue of beauty and how we define it has been studied for centuries. Scholars from all fields of study have searched for the "formula" for beauty. Darwin in his book The Descent of Man wrote, "It is certainly not true that there is in the mind of man any universal standard of beauty with respect to the human body. It is however, possible that certain tastes in the course of time become inherited, though I have no evidence in favor of this belief." (1) Science has tried to look at beauty beyond the conscious level. It has tried to determine what roles biology plays in human attraction. Scientists have discovered that symmetry and scent play a role in defining human attraction. (3) But while this can begin to explain beauty on the most basic of levels, what accounts for variations in the standard of beauty? The idea of beauty varies within different societies and communities. Do these cultural preferences have a biological basis? What is the relationship between biology and society in relation to the idea of beauty? How do they relate to each other, and how do they differ? In particular what role does science play in the preference that many societies, (in particular South Asian, East Asian, and North American Cultures), have for fairer skin?
In a world where many are led to believe that they fall short of what society depicts as “perfect”, it is still true that everyone is beautiful in their own way. There are even more demands on girls now a days than there has ever been before. Some may think they need to fit in, so they become someone they are not or they begin to act like a totally different person. “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy, illustrates society’s high and unrealistic expectations on the physical appearance of women, while failing to see that a woman’s self-esteem is at risk of being diminished.
“My lips and fingers were blue because I was so thin that my heart was struggling to pump blood around my body”, said teen model fashion Georgina (Carroll 1). The new skinny has become excessively scrawny. Is it definitely not normal for today’s society models to walk around with blue fingers starving themselves until their organs start failing! As for the model agencies, they couldn’t care less of the pressure and dangerous practices they put the models through in order for them to stay thin for the runway. Even fashion Designers continue to produce the smallest couture sample sizes and scout for the slimiest bodies to wear the designs not aware of the consequences of the pressure they not only put on models, but on the society girls to look like these starving models. And when the models continue to get offers from the most important fashion industries like Prada, it motivates them to keep doing what they are doing to stay in the shape they are in (Carroll 1). But little did the outside world know what this pressure had on the models and what they were doing to their bodies to peruse their modeling careers.
The most fashionable, sought after magazines in any local store are saturated with beautiful, thin women acting as a sexy ornament on the cover. Commercials on TV feature lean, tall women promoting unlimited things from new clothes to as simple as a toothbrush. I was recently leafing through the pages of the 2002 Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and within a matter of five minutes, I was majorly downing my body and my looks. I couldn’t help but compare my body to that of a woman who is 5’10” and weighs 105 pounds, when the average female is 5’6” and weighs 140 pounds. It’s no wonder there are so many cases of anorexia and bulimia when a model, comparable to the stick figures drawn by kindergartener's everywhere, is yet another symbol of what is considered to be beautiful.
We as humans were told from a young age that you had to be a size 0 to be beautiful. You had to have blonde hair and blue eyes, and you should always know and keep up with the everyday fashion. Everyone strives to look like the models on the cover of their favorite magazine, or their favorite Hollywood star. Society tells everyone from the moment they’re born that they must fit into this stereotype to go far in life, and to be “beautiful”. If someone doesn’t fit into these categories for some reason they are outcasted. These outcasted people aren’t given the time of day. People judge others without even knowing a person, and these judgements are made on appearances. People are put into categories based on how they are perceived by a particular person. There’s more to a person than what’s on the outside though.
Throughout history, United States’ beauty standards have been challenged and changing. Some examples of American beauty standards include having fair/light skin, colored eyes and being thin. These standards have been influence by Anglo-Saxons and were quickly adapted in the social hierarchy of the United States. However, these standards fail to acknowledge women of color and their diversity in beauty and the media. It is apparent how racial inequality and white supremacy oppress and stereotype women of color by looking at the beauty standards in America.
The way we are raised, and what the definition of beauty has become has altered how we see things and essentially, caused us to associate them with good and fat with bad. It’s true that people with these implicit associations show prejudice and explicit stereotypes; however that does not make them a bad person. They may seem rude, but the stereotypes are embedded in them, it is all they know. Due to the norm, a customary standard behavior that is shared by members of a society, outcomes the normative influence. The norm in this situation would be that beautiful people are thin. The media has one of the most influential impacts on what is seen as beauty in society (Bromley, 2012).Women spend thousands of dollars on products and cosmetics to achieve the unrealistic and unhealthy look of models on advertisements (Valenti, 2007). In most extreme cases, women who feel that their unhealthy weight goal is not achieved turn to extreme eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating (Cunning, 2011). However, despite the unrealistic frames of models on advertisements, women are still lured and pressured into the “perfect” image that is portrayed by the media using race, youth, and sexuality (Bromley, 2012).
A tall, glamorous runway model is every girl’s dream. Long beautiful legs, lean body, and beautiful shiny hair is what an average young woman views as an ideal image for a female. If you don’t resemble the images of those stunning Victoria Secret models and Fashion Week models, you suddenly become ashamed of your own body. It is a great life to have with the high pay, fame, drinking champagne on a yacht with famous celebrities and even being on the Vogue cover page. Fashion Modeling Industry has been the most influential source in our young women’s lives. Young girls and young women are seen eating as little as they can, even starving themselves at times to resemble those models. What they don’t realize is that they are contributing to the 2.7 percentage of 13- 18 year olds suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Susan Albers, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic said exposure to thin models is a great trigger in maintaining an eating disorder. When watching America’s Next Top Model or flipping through a Fashion magazine, these young women don’t apprehend that those models are either naturally slim or they are suffering from an eating disorder themselves, in other words, hostages in the dark hell hid behind those runway curtains. The growing number of young anorexia and bulimia patients, and the number of websites such as thinspiration, where girls put up pictures of their thin bodies clearly suggest that the fashion modeling industry do not at all bear any responsibility in providing healthy, realistic physical role models for young women.
