Competition is a human instinct, sports can shape society, and influence politics. No sporting event is more important to the entire world than the Olympic games. The Olympics first came about in 776 B.C., an idea developed by the ancient Greeks. It included many people competing in sports for pride and honor. The games changed a lot in their near millenia and a half of absence from the world. The Olympics have evolved a lot since then. In 1896, the swimming competitions were held in the rough, and frigid waters of the open sea, and a man who prior to his arrival in Athens had never seen discus, came home a champion, winning the event. Todays Olympics, in comparison, have multi-million dollar facilities, and feature tens of thousands of the best athletes from almost every country on the planet. However, the Underlying purpose remains the same, to unite everyone as one, nations from around the world gather in under the same roof, competing alongside each other.
