Independent contractors are self-employed, and due to not being considered employees, they are not protected by labor and relevant tax laws. Many employers, for example, Uber or another ride sharing service, take advantage of this to dodge taxes, avoid paying benefits, and evade various other liabilities. The definition of an employee is not completely black and white, and no one standard can differentiate between employees and independent contractors.
The "20-Factor Test" is an assessment of employment status by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The test is used to determine whether a worker will be defined as either an employee or an independent contractor. It uses 20 general questions across three categories: relationship of the parties,

The drivers are not required to go through any training, though they must have a valid driver's license. The workers' services collectively are integrated with the success of the ride sharing company. In this case, the work performed is rendered personally. Ride sharing employees do not have the authority to hire any assistants. In my opinion, the worker does not necessarily have a continuing relationship with the employer. Also, the employees do not follow a set schedule or work full-time. The employees do not perform their services on company premises or use equipment owned by the company. These employees do not submit regular reports to corporate, and can receive their payment at any time in the app. The company does not pay for any business expenses and does not provide any materials. The drivers themselves invest in a vehicle to be able to earn money through performing rides. The payments to the workers are dependent on the number of rides they complete. Becoming a driver is available to the general public, and drivers may also do rides on competing apps or have another occupation, so they usually do not work for just one ride sharing company. Finally, the employee can be discharged for wrongdoings, and has the right to quit at any time without
Uber tried to remove liability by saying that the driver was not providing services for any passengers at the time of the accident. The lawyer for the family of the young girl argued that even though there were no services being
In 1961, the US Freedom Rides was quite a significant event that is still remembered by many Americans and African-Americans today. It was the time when racial discrimination and segregation had existed and has had an immense effect and impact on African-Americans. Yet, it had ended after a lot of hard work protesting, campaigning in different areas of America and thanks to some key events that had also helped along with these including the Birmingham Campaign and Martin Luther King Jr’s activism. This event of the United States however is a lot similar to events that had occurred in Australia at the time and is considered to be an inspiration to Aboriginal activism and protest in Australia. The event that took place for the Aboriginal activism
Driver retention is an ongoing problem in the trucking industry. Driver turnover rates are always high. The problem with such a high turnover rate is attributed to many factors. Workplace environment, demographics, and driver’s quality of life seems to be the leading factor. There are factors that could lead to better retention among drivers. Most truckers want the family feel among drivers. Benefits is the leading factor to high turnover in the industry. Drivers want and need good benefit packages that include vacation, illness, and pension. When the companies make the driver feel more needed, then you will have a better and more
To be an official uber, one must pass a background check, be at least 21 years old, have car insurance, and lastly have a car. There is no interview process, face to face meeting or anything; you simply pass a background check and you’re an uber driver. In Cincinnati, an Uber driver with a criminal history attacked one of their riders. The lady jumped out of the moving car and called the police, "He wasn't listening at all to me, I told him to leave maybe 50 times, and you know he wouldn't leave” she told the police. Since 2010, the year Uber was founded, there have been over one hundred attacks, kidnappings, and assaults. Another incident occurred in late 2015, when 26 year old uber driver, Patrick Karajah, beat his passenger with a hammer and drove away. The victim of the assault recalls, "All of the sudden [Karajah] appeared at the door with the hammer and said, 'I told you to get the f*** out of my car,'". The Uber driver was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury, and he has pleaded not guilty to both counts, according to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office; Karajah was freed on $125,000 bail. Uber continues to prove why their business cannot be trusted, do you know who is driving
This test should check for a few different things. It should verify that the hourly rate is correct, the number of hours worked matches the number...
There are a lot of positive reports about the benefits working for Uber has compared to working for a taxi company. Cab drivers have to pay exponential rates to lease cabs; Uber drivers have the freedom to drive cars they own. Many former cab drivers have switched to Uber due to the personal financial benefits (“Uber isn’t Just Good For…”). There have been some reports of inappropriate
Most of the drivers are over fifty years meaning that more drivers retire than can be replaced with younger counterparts. This significantly decreases the workforce for the long haul truck drivers. Most young drivers decline the job offers from the companies because of the poor working conditions that may result in critical health problems and road safety (Duke, 2010). The remuneration received from the work is not worthwhile to them hence the disinterest of young people joining the workforce of the long haul truck drivers. The drivers are simply not being paid enough to be on the road for all those hours and neglecting their families.
If there were no drivers, there would be no profits, and if drivers found other more favourable ways to make income, Uber would be affected drastically. This is an impactful flaw in Uber’s design. Drivers will often be dissatisfied due to no real employer-employee relationship due to only contract employment, lack of communication, and extremely minimal room for drivers to advance in rank or professionally develop.
Squires’ experiences with the taxi industry demonstrates why she decides to support Uber, and furthers her contention. To conclude the article, the author attacks the taxi industry, saying “thanks for nothing”, providing a defiant finish to a piece that savagely brandishes an institution that Squires labelled “an
Don’t get me started on buses, they drive me crazy! One thing which annoys me the most about buses is the unhygienic environment. You dare to even put your hand under a seat and you’ll have chewing gum stuck to your palm. But, if that is not enough, there are empty crisp packets and sweet wrappers under many of the seats.
How important is it to exemplify exceptional customer service within the Food Truck Industry? In this unique industry, there are several components that correspond with exceptional customer service. However, the leading components of customer service all seem to start with health and overall truck appearance. Consumers look for these qualities in food trucks more than they do in conventional dine-in restaurants, mostly because they already expect the exact opposite. Competitors within the industry have usually found success by bringing these aspects to a visual level.
Is this the way we want to see our future society? I can support the choice of busing students to a different school for greater opportunities. The opportunity for school choice allows a parent to have options for their child’s education. The options could be the opportunity to meet their child’s needs.
Even though Uber provides a great service with high qualities to its customers, it also offers part times jobs to them. According to “Uber Business Model Could Change Your Work” by Farhad Manjoo describes, “Uberization will have its benefits: Technology could make your work life more flexible, allowing you to fit your job, or perhaps multiple jobs, around your schedule, rather than vice versa.” This quotes clearly shows that Uber offers flexible job that allow its employers to be involve in other activities even other job. This company brings job opportunities of people that want to earn extra money to improve their income. Uber allows employers to make their own schedule and to sign in or up when they want to.
The development of urban transportation has not changed with the cities; cities have changed with transportation. This chapter offers an insight into the Past and the future of Urban transportation and is split up into a number of different sections. It includes a timeline of the different forms of transport innovations, starting from the earliest stages of urban transport, dating back to the omnibus (the first type of urban transportation) and working in a chronological order until eventually reaching the automobile. However, these changes in Urban transport did not happen for no reason. Different factors within society meant urban transport needed to evolve; points will be made on why society needed this evolution. In contrast I will observe the problems urban transport has caused in society as a result of its rapid progression. Taking account of both arguments for the evolution of urban transport, I will look at where it will go in the future.
Most people take the urban public transportation system for granted. It is used in every aspect of our daily lives: work, education, medical necessities, recreation, etc. It is also important for the transportation of goods and services, which aids the growth and maintenance of our economy. Urban public transportation is the critical component of our quality of life and economic stability. The MBTA, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, is Boston and Eastern Massachusetts’s major transportation service. The MBTA has played a central role in the development of Boston and surrounding cities and towns for more than a century; providing service from 175 cities and towns into Boston. On an average weekday over 1.2 million trips are made on the subway, buses, commuter lines and other services in the mass transit system. With an international airport, a ship port, the highways, and the rail lines to connect regional cities and towns to national and international destinations and markets, Boston’s urban public transportation system has made the region’s growing role in the global economy possible.
