Everyone in my house is (relatively) healthy! That means that I am able to finally return to the gym after about two weeks off.
In the meantime, I'd been doing some Wii Fit here and there, but it's just not the same. I never feel like I'm really getting anything going while playing the game. Plus, it's too easy for something else to come up or distract me.
That's what I like about going to the gym. I get up early and go first thing in the morning while it's still dark. Once I get there, I have no choice but to exercise. I can't go lie down and take a nap. I can't go watch some TV. I can't go read a book. I have to exercise, or I have to go to work.
Early last year, I was doing about 30 minutes of cardio (elliptical, treadmill, stationary bike), and then about 15 minutes of resistance training, usually using weight machines or dumbbells. But during the summer, I started slacking off and missing workouts, and now that I'm back I've pretty much just done cardio. This week I started adding back in some weights. The problem is that I don't remember where I was on the different machines. So I'm not sure about how much weight to put on them.

The "Shape Up at Work" program is going pretty well. They've really started it off slowly by design. I think they're afraid of giving people too much information too quickly. I can understand that. A college campus is nothing without a gym. College sports, and cultural events take place in the T.M. Elmore Gym on Alabama A&M’s campus. This gym is located on the west side of A&M’s campus between Louis Crews stadium and Dr. Ernest L. Knight West Campus dorms. This building has made a large impact on the culture of the school considering that the gym is home to sports teams, classrooms, pep rallies, guest speakers and convocations.

Our table is dismissed. I head back to gym with a full stomach, something that shouldn’t happen. Third block is the lunch block and the eighth grade special block. This shouldn’t happen and as principle the first change that would be in immediate effect would amend the schedule to be specials during first, second, and fourth block. This will cause improvements in health with gym being at least an hour away from lunch for the eighth grade; dietary habits considering people eat as minimal food as possible to preserve their stomach, and enthusiasm because students will see any change to the current schedule as a robust change. Based on the fact that I personally could be considered a gym rat, a stereotypical name for someone who spends a lot of time in the work out area. This is partially by choice being on the swim team requires the strength training equipment that is available to our disposal in the gym. While I have been to the gym many times I haven’t really taken the time to take in the other people around me. Within this ethnographic exercise I will explore the college gym norms within Roger Williams University.
Growing up my parents ran a little lake on the outskirts of my hometown of Shelbina here in northeast Missouri. I was the "tough" one out of my family by the time I was in the ninth grade I could use two weed eaters at the same time and pick up the back end of a golf cart. At 5'3 and wearing size 16 I was big girl and was often made fun of by my peers. I wanted to be something other than the "fat girl" at school. So I became stronger than an ox and used that to my advantage. My high school coach seen me one day bench pressing a picnic table and begged me to join the weightlifting program. I excelled at the class and became known as "Pipes" I went from being the chunky girl to being the girl that was respected for my bench pressing and squats. My coach believed in me and that was all I needed to continue to do my best. That year I made a C average except for weightlifting where I got an A and earned the respect from my peers and my coach.

For this week’s observations assignment, I have chosen to observe my home away from home the gym. Now, to garner a view of the entire gym I select to jump on the stair master which offers the best vantage point of the facility. The location of the gym is on the island of Hawaii centrally located between the different sides of the island. The time of observation is the peak operating hour of 1600. Additionally, the gym setting is natural lighting, upbeat music, and young patrons. Furthermore, the patrons of the gym are a mix of ethnicities; however, the primary ethnicity is Polynesian because of the gym 's location. Moreover, the socioeconomic class of the gym patrons seems to be middle-class citizens who dress well, have the latest technology gadgets, and newest training aids. So now that there is information regarding the atmosphere let’s move onward to the social norms.
Exercising frequently can be a positive habit, but if a person becomes addicted to it, it has negative effects as well. Exercise addiction is not easy to identify because, like any other addict, they tend to deny they have a problem. This addiction is referred to by a variety of names such as exercise dependence, exercise addiction, obligatory exercise, compulsive athleticism, compulsive exercising, and exercise abuse. "Men and women are equally prone to exercise addiction, which affects about three percent of the population, according to a study at the University of Southern California. Exercise addicts usually work out two or three hours a day, six or seven days a week." That's a statement I believe we can both agree. Whether you go to the gym; stay at home; or even go outside to do your exercise. There are ALL kinds of resources that you can use; such as a bench in the park, for triceps dips and stretching hamstrings; a flat surface, where you can do your yoga/Pilates; or just go for a run/walk outside. Understandably, life is busy. There is work/school, then extra circular activities, the need to eat, and then do homework, if you’re a student. A survey done by ,Daniel Wesley fromvisualeconomics.com, says that we waste “2.61 hours a day watching TV.” Within these 2.5 hours one can work out and help the body feel better and you will relieve stress.
Adding exercises into one’s daily routines can change their whole lifestyle. Many people look at exercise as being something just for people who want to lose weight or to become muscle bound, but there are a great deal of benefits that can be received from exercising regularly. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
One of the best ways in how people can improve their overall mood, keep their bones healthy and even live longer, is by being an active person. Fred DeVito stated that “if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn 't change you”; however most people just want exercise just to have a fit body and be healthier without knowing great results. Other effects that exercise has into the body are normalization of glucose, insulin and leptin levels. In other words not only will it make the appearance in a person’s life to look great, but their entire body will have an extraordinary response. In order to have a more fulfilling and enjoyable life, those who are out of shape should participate in regular fitness schedule reginert.
