Through the rise of large-scale fast food corporations, the blame has shifted toward the mass consumerism of these global industries. It is, however, due to poor lifestyle choices that the U.S. population has seen a significant increase in the percentage of people afflicted with obesity. In 1990 the percentage of obese people in the United States was approximated at around 15%. In 2010, however, it is said that “36 states had obesity rates of 25 percent or higher”(Millar). The health risks linked to obesity include ”heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancers, gallbladder disease and gallstones, osteoarthritis, gout, and sleep apnea”(Miller). Blood pressure is the result of how hard your blood is pushing along the vascular veins and walls. Blood pressure is the result of two forces. The first force is found when blood pumps out of the heart to the arteries that are part of the circulatory system. The second force is found when the heart rests between heart beats. In relation, diabetes is the sugar content in your blood. Obesity has increased the chances of breast cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer and many other diseases. Gallstones are the small, hard deposits found in the gallbladder, a sac-like organ that lies in the abdomen. Osteoarthritis is the deformation of your joints. This can be caused when there is a lot of weight put on for the joints. Gout is a similar form of arthritis. This occurs when uric acid builds up in blood and causes inflammation in the joints. With the consistent eating of fast food, your weight will increase which will eventually make you obese. With obesity comes its many risks and diseases. Understandably, life is busy. There is work/school, then extra circular activities, the need to eat, and then do homework, if you’re a student. A survey done by ,Daniel Wesley fromvisualeconomics.com, says that we waste “2.61 hours a day watching TV.” Within these 2.5 hours one can work out and help the body feel better and you will relieve stress. Working out can help with one’s studies. There are different chemicals that are given off to your brain while you work out. Endorphins and Serotonin chemicals get released into the brain. These two chemicals that flood the brain improve self-esteem, enhanced mood, provide better memory and provide mental functioning, and a decrease of stress. Obesity is a serious problem that increases year after year and affects the lives of many Americans. It is a problem that needs to be eradicated, but who is responsible for this problem? Some argue that individuals are responsible for their own weight; that it is a private concern. Some others, on the other hand, argue that it is a public concern; therefore, the government should play a significant role to stop reduce obesity from the public domain. They also argue that advertisements for junk food are factors that increase obesity. As persuasive as the advertisements can be and even with the help of the government, it is our decision to not eat healthy and end up in a state of obesity.

A huge debate that is going on all throughout the United States is this- Should schools provide one healthy meal for students to help end the fight of childhood obesity? Schools are beginning to pick up the slack for the lost direction that children should receive at home. Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic all through our country. In today’s society, childhood obesity is growing at an alarming rate. Humans are born to live a long and happy life, but not all humans live that long life due to health issues, murder, and/or suicide. We can’t help some of the health issues that cause us to die like cancer, diabetes, heart problems, and anything else imaginable. When you read the word “diabetes” did you think of someone that is overweight? Our human race is very quick to judge that everyone thinks that when someone has diabetes they are automatically overweight. While encouraging women to love their body is appealing, there are many dangers in the fondness of obesity. Glorifying obesity can lead to being morbidly unhealthy, as demonstrated by Dominique Lanoise, a woman who died from morbid obesity.
America is one of the most obese countries in the world, and the reasons are quite obvious. Take a look around. Fast food chains on every block, more and more technology to make our lives easier, and high amount of stress are just a few factors to weight gain in our country. There are many different views on obesity and how the people think it should be resolved, whether it's government making the change or the people taking care of themselves. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Are we doing enough to bring these statistics down? No. In the last 40 years, there has been a growth to more than 160,000 fast food restaurants in America (“Adolescent and School Health”). Restaurants (such as Wendy's, McDonald's etc.) serve more than 50 million people per day, generating about 65 million in sales annually. Only since obesity has become a national epidemic have fast food restaurants changed their ways. But we need to do more than just change the kind of oil the french fries are fried in. Better yet, why don't we remove, or intensely decrease the number of the unhealthy fast food chains, and spread more healthy fast food chains, such as Subway? Is it something government could take act in? Should the United States government take measures to fight the rise of obesity in the country, or are choices concerning diet and nutrition better left to the individuals, free of government interference?
There is an epidemic running rampant across the United States and most people do not know the effects it has on society; this epidemic is none other than obesity. In the last thirty-five years, the obesity rate has more than tripled. Obesity has many ill effects and is the cause of many diseases. Washington Post journalist Wil Haygood, elaborates, “A lot of our medications are for ‘disease states,’ such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, things that can be adversely affected by increased weight” (411). Speaking with a pharmacist, Haygood explicates how obesity can lead to serious disease and further health implications that are difficult to overcome.
Child obesity is at its highest in the United States. With fast food restaurants spreading, new food products being produced, and health rates hiking in children between ages of 3-13, children are at a higher risk of reaching obesity. Nutrients are very important for children to contain in their body due to the fact they are growing regularly. Without the specific vitamins and minerals needed in the body, lack of physical activity, and false parental guidance, children are in jeopardy of becoming overweight. Should parents be responsible for this issue? The lack of exercise is one of the most health-related issues in today’s society. Many individuals fail to realize how important exercising is to life. The human body is meant to stay in motion, if we do not exercise daily we are easily prone to different diseases and health issues over time. Exercising daily can help reduce health conditions and diseases, improve brain functions, reduce stress and mood, improve your sleep, and strengthen your bones and muscles.
