Do you ever know, the percent of adults who are obese in the United States is 34.9% now, and it was continuously getting larger in the recent years (CDC)? What a surprise that more than 1 out of 3 adults are obese in our country. Obesity can cause various health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, Coronary heart disease, or even directly cause death. So, it is time to control and prevent obesity. Exercise is a good and normal way to lose weight, but Melinda Moyer discusses about another way, reducing the gain of carbs in people’s daily lives. She leads readers to explore the relation between carbs-rich diet and obesity or chronic disease. This is because people trust experts most. In this article, the author introduces some major standpoints which stated by experts about the reasons cause obesity and the solutions. For example, “the late New York cardiologist Robert Atkins developed his low-carb diet after reading a paper on the approach in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1963 and trying one himself” (Moyer 4). Cardiologist should have the biggest voice on what’s the best diet habit. So, when the author uses an evidence about a New York cardiologist, most readers don’t have doubt about the point she supports for. Robert Atkins recommended diet without carbohydrates which replaced by proteins and vegetables. This view strongly supports the author’s arguments of getting rid of carbs from our diet. More than that, this example includes a reliable publication “the Journal of the American Medical Association”, which is the one of the most authoritative publication in medical field. She reports the result of a research published by researchers at the US Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Duke University. The result is low-carb dieters lost 12.9 percent of their former weight, while low-fat dieters lost only 6.7 percent (Moyer 8). “12.9” and “6.7” and directly shows the difference between low-fat diet and low-carb diet.
