RESEARCH AND RELEVANCE
The ability to listen to others in a thoughtful and careful manner is critical for children’s social and academic learning, allowing them to gain information and develop vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language skills. Although young children make increasing strides in their abilities to self-regulate—including paying attention and controlling their bodies—there are a number of factors that can make it challenging for them to listen carefully. Environmental challenges include external distractions such as noise and movement, which cannot always be controlled, and internal challenges include comprehension difficulties, a lack of motivation or interest, or competing interests. It is important to provide them with many opportunities to practice focused, attentive listening and to help them monitor their own listening behavior and comprehension.
Responding to others is an often-overlooked communication skill. In addition to listening attentively, it is important for children to learn that it is appropriate and respectful
James C. Petersen (2007), author of Why Don’t We Listen Better, offers practical advice on how to communicate effectively and connect with others. In order to help his readers, communicate effectively, Petersen (2007) divides his book into five divisions. Each division builds on the content in the preceding portions. Every segment provides a great amount of information, which will aid people in how they choose to communicate.
At Clarke I currently teach in a self contained classroom of four year old children that are deaf and hard of hearing who are learning to listen and speak. I assist under the direction of the classroom teacher in planning, preparing and executing lessons in a listening and spoken language approach. I have the opportunity to record, transcribe and analyze language samples on a daily basis. In addition, I facilitate the child's communication in the classroom and ensure carryover of activities between the classroom and individual speech therapy sessions. Every week I contribute and participate in meetings with the educational team to discuss each child's progress using Cottage Acquisition Scales of Speech, Language and Listening (CASSLLS).
Listen even when you feel what the other person is saying isn't important; the likelihood is that it is important to them and you should give them the respect and courtesy of really listening. This also models the respect and courtesy that you would like them to display.

The Importance of Listening for Professional and Personal Relationships Listening is essential for communication, yet is a skill in which most are lacking. Though we are listening constantly, knowing what to listen to requires an enormous amount of discipline and practice, which is vital for communicating effectively. Learning to listen will benefit all relationships from professional to personal and not being able to listen effectively can cause these relationships to deteriorate. “Indeed, although aware of the instrumentality of listening, even trained communicators often fail to listen correctly or at opportune times” (Cline, 2013). In order for all of areas of communication in an individual to flourish, listening must be emphasized.
A vital aspect of interpersonal communication is the style in which one listens. While every individual possesses their own preferred method of listening in communication, it can be enlightening to analyze our own strengths and weaknesses so as to maximize effectual communication. Within the confines of four main listening style categories, I have chosen those which best describe my own personal listening style.

Effectively listening not only helps me to understand others but has allowed me to give appropriate feedback when needed. To listen is critical because there are certain instructions a supervisor may be delivering verbally and to be a good employee to understand what is being said helps improve performance as a worker.
