Child Poverty: A Growing Problem Many people do not realize just how much poverty can affect not only adults but also children. Child poverty affects of twenty-two percent of all children in the United States. What is child poverty? UNICEF gives child poverty the definition of “Children living in poverty [are those who] experience deprivation of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and thrive, leaving them unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential or participate as full and equal members of society” (Minujin). Even though child poverty is a very serious issue in today's society, most people do not fully understand just how serious it is. Child poverty causes children to lack in becoming a successful adult. Due to the economy, child poverty is a serious issue in the world community that everyone can help prevent.
Poverty often affects the way a child performs in school. Children that live in low income families often trail behind in all stages of education. At the age of three, children are learning new words, making improvements in pronunciation, understanding and listening to conversations, and they are developing their logical reasoning (“How Your Child”). The children that live in poverty are more likely to live in worse living conditions than those children of wealthier families. When they live in poor housing, it has a significant effect on both their physical and mental health, as well as academic achievement. Housing conditions are considered poor when there is not a sound structure, has hazards, and cannot provide adequate sleeping arrangements, personal hygiene, the preparation and storage of food.
