Poverty and The Affect it has on Children
Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. Are children really affected by poverty like medical professionals and researches claim? Researchers at the Trends Child Research Brief, twenty one percent of families live in poverty just in United States not counting children outside of the United States. The percent of families living in poverty continues to increase every year. Although it’s may be hard to think about, there are many negative affects poverty has on children, short term and long term. Without medical insurance, children don’t get the medical attention like they need causing health problems later. Being without health insurance also affects pregnant women resulting to the baby being born with possible medical issues from not being able to get the proper prenatal care they needed while pregnant. Having to live in poverty makes children more prone to the fact that children are often faced with dangerous situations, trauma, abuse, depression, and low quality of child care. Children that are often dealt with dealing with the stressors such as low income, exposure to crimes, limited to little medical insurance, are highly susceptible to physical and mental disorders. Researches claim they are more likely to get in trouble as children. Being that must of the time there is lack of structure in the home for many reasons, one being the parents having to work odd hours to be able to care for the family and not being able to be home to care for their children. This becomes a problem while entering adulthood being that there’s lack of structure inside of the home. Children are more likely to suffer from conflict, violence, and social unrest then other children. Smoking cigarette is more likely to be done by children, but studies claim that children drinking and smoking marijuana are not more prone to it then children living outside of poverty. Babies are more prone to be born outside of wedlock. Resulting in those children possible raised in the same situation as their parents were raised. Crimes are often done more by people living in poverty, resulting for them being targets to police officers, therefore landing more poor people in jail than any other people. Studies show that majority of prisons are filled with people that came from poverty themselves. Children are often exposed to violence and crimes resulting to them doing it
