When choosing sources for a research topic, the most important factor of a quality source is depth and reliability. That is the key to a strong, well-written, argument. Many times, one can find themselves fishing through an array of sources, not knowing which ones to use. A student may find a passage in a book or article that perfectly fits the idea of their research, and they think they have struck gold. They sit down, ready to write their masterpiece. They come to that point in their paper that is tailor-made for that perfect quote or idea; only to find that they understood the idea out of context, and to top it off; the author of this perfect source has no evidence to support any of what they have written. The source material that it references should come from a reliable resource. And secondly, its reliable resources should have reliable resources as well. Superior resources take time and patience to find, but will supply the researcher with a vast amount of material to refer to throughout their entire work.
Support sources would be considered the “Aerosmith” of the research world. They add stability to already proven material with assisting viewpoints from a similar perspective. They will not be enough to argue a point alone, but the researcher can use support sources to expand on ideas found in the main points of superior source material. They are not necessary, nor do they add any new perspective on a topic. They are only useful as an extension of a supporting or superior source. Examples of a filler source would be “Unconventional Medicine,” Dr. Neal Barnard’s interview with Alisa Bowman for “Spirituality and Health Magazine,” or “Slow Food USA,” (slowfoodusa.org) a website dedicated to those, whose belief is in an all-natural dietary plan. “Unconventional Medicine” doesn’t provide anything new, when compared to Dr. Neal Barnard’s previously mentioned book, “Program for Reversing Diabetes.” Although, it could be used to provide direct quotes from Dr. Barnard, himself. “Slow Food USA” provides, for the majority, opinion pieces, with no direct links to outsourced articles, or research sources. Their team is made up of executives, whose credentials are severely lacking, when compared with their mission; their website primarily has blog posts; and their publication is full of articles that primarily focus on where they are going and what they are doing in the world. As students we are taught that in order to have an effective argument, we need a claim, reasoning, and evidence. When comparing, “Two Years Are Better than Four” by Liz Addison, and “Colleges Prepare People for Life” by Freeman Hrabowski it was made obvious that the passage written by Addison had a more effective argument because of the passages claim that was clear to the readers, great reasoning and evidence that backed up her claim.
It was quite challenging for me because the research process was long and I wasn’t read the articles carefully enough. After I gathered all the article I was lucky to find many goods points from the articles to support my point. It is better to have many resources to use for the final essay, so I was trying to carefully maximize the use of those articles. They have been some challenges in trying to figure out the right approach to follow in a research study, and this semester is more of an eye opener that reveals the expected ways in conducting research which has been a very interesting and tough process. Dudley (2011), least four major search strategies available for locating references related to the chosen topic issues these include: (1) consultation, (2) searches in subject indexes, (3) browsing, and (4) footnote chasing. Researcher needs to be aware of all of these strategies in information gathering.
The sources used by the author dictated the conversation that could be issued. The difference stances and opinions gave the author a broader viewpoint to discuss the issue on. With the aid of sources and references, many being used above, she gave the reader a different view point of the problem, debating the reader to determine whether it truly is something that cannot be controlled or is something that can easily be avoided based on freewill.

I failed to find any scholarly sources for this assignment. Ms. Schwartz said, “You MUST include some scholarly, academic sources for your research to achieve the desired ethos (ethos represents credibility)”. With the reminder Ms. Schwartz gave me I was able to go back to the UA library database and look for scholarly sources to support my research topic. As I looked ahead to Module 3 and began to work on future assignments I was able to correct this problem. For example, in the Module 3 assignment, The Exploratory Essay, I used a mixture of both popular and scholarly sources. I am now able to locate sources for other assignments from the library and feel confident going forth that I will be able to use this knowledge in other classes I take.

Ideally, I propose a detailed analysis in my paper how Teach for America has made major progress with student success and the poverty rate has decreased with the help of Teach for America.
