Generally speaking, all of my Rehabilitation courses have been a major interest of mine. The three classes that I believe will help towards my personal endeavors would be Introduction to Disability Services, Group Process, and Vocational Rehabilitation.
Introduction to Disability Services reassured me that I wanted to work with individuals who with disabilities. The course made me feel passion for what I was learning, as a result of this I found myself participating a lot more in class, than I did in my education courses. I was also retaining the information better, resulting in higher test grades. It also provided me with the background knowledge of certain disabilities, and how to put a person before the disability, which I found to be
beneficial and intriguing. Sophomore year I took Group Process. This became my favorite class of the spring semester. I learned about what a group was, how to lead a group and then got a chance to co-lead a group which I really enjoyed, even if it was a bit stressful to set up. Co-leading a group forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and try something completely new. Since this class I have found that stepping outside of my comfort zone is a great skill to posses even if it can feel uncomfortable at first. I am currently in Vocational Rehabilitation and so far I really enjoy it. This course has gave me insight to what vocational rehabilitation is, which is a process that allows an individual with various impairments or health disabilities to obtain employment. Vocational rehabilitation is definitely not an easy job, but I feel that it would be rewarding, which is why at some point in my career I want to be a VR counselor.
Along with research on the positive affirmations of rehabilitation in prisons, there are studies that expand upon whether or not imprisonment reduces recidivism. During a time of mass incarceration, the goal is to reconstruct a prisoner’s actions so that they do not pose as a threat to society after they are released. However, some cases show that imprisonment may not be the best way to transition an offender toward a more pro-social lifestyle. Cullen, Jonson, & Nagin (2011) depict prisons as places to keep offenders away from the community to prevent crime and less about reconciliation. My overall experience in Intro to Human Services was phenomenal. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I loved the way it was taught and I was able to understand how human services works while reading the book Precious throughout the semester. This course isn’t an easy class that you can just relax and breeze through. It has a lot of fundamental chapters that explain the jobs of helpers also known as human service workers. I loved how we were supposed to read the chapters before class and then we would review in class. It made more sense by doing it this way. It never felt like we were rushing through the material and the pace of the class was perfect. I also loved how professor Oropall always was willing to explain
Rayhena Karim: I am a Registered Nurse with fifteen years of experience in Acute Rehabilitation. I completed an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing in 1999 from Rio Hondo Community College. Nursing in today’s healthcare system is challenging because of rapid technological advance and changes in healthcare policies. There is a high demand for professionally educated nurses to meet the needs of a more complex and changing health care system. My desire to pursue a bachelor degree in nursing to enhance my nursing education. As a dedicated nursing professional with a passion for learning, I want to stay on top of these changes and learn all I can to increase my knowledge.
The long term care course was very interesting and helped me learn more about what is involved. In the LTC are not only nursing homes, but also adult day care, hospice and home health service. Long-term care is service and supports that a person would need for their own care. A lot of long-term care is not medical care and is considered assisting on everyday personal tasks. I learned that long-term care services are determined by chronic disease and disability. There will always be a need for long-term care.

Therapy Analysis The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficacy of my work as a co-therapist during the fifth session with the simulated couple Katy and Michelle. I will discuss our therapy agenda and the goals we hope to attain during the session. It is prudent to begin by giving a brief outline of the couple’s present problem and the patterns of dysfunction that I have identified within their relationship. In my opinion, it is the therapist’s job to recognize patterns and behaviors that disrupt the intimate bond between the partners.
I came into this class not really knowing any more then people can get insurance and money for food from the human service department. My eyes were definitely opened those first couple weeks of class. I have realized that there is so much more that a human services worker can do. I also learned that most people who use the services are truly desperate and need help. I have learned a lot about seeing the big picture and not just what’s in front of me.
Shaw and Kuehn, the authors of the article highlighted the importance of sound accreditation in the rehabilitation counseling field and the process of accreditation should be developmental and consultative instead of just assessing monitoring regulations. Further, self-improvement is an important factor because as programs evolve with new knowledge and trends, adjustments would have to be made regularly to keep a cutting-edge program and an accrediting body. This would include curriculum change that would be done in a timely fashion and that is beneficial to the program.
I can use what I have learned in my line of work in the medical field as a Nurse in explaining to people how insurance works such as fee for service, bundled payment, capital payment, HMO, PPO, PPS, DRG payments, Medicare, Medicaid, payments systems, and calculations of payments when it comes to hospital and physician billing. This course has given me a different outlook of the United States government benefits program for the less fortunate people and disable people in the United States. Through evidence based research, I have performed better and most importantly understand the different classifications to be approved by Medicare/ Medicaid system and the different benefits that comes with it. As a citizen in the United States, we are fortunate to have different programs but, not a lot of people take advantage of it because of lack of information. By taking this course it made me a confident resource person and a liaison for people who are lacking the necessary information and understanding about our health care
I have started to volunteer from the last week of June 2016 at the Royal Springs Rehabilitation center, in Las Vegas. This facility has 350 beds, occupied mainly by many disabled residents. The volunteering at the activity department of this center provided me with an opportunity to serve the residents as well as the employees of this facility. Volunteering helps connect with people, promotes the personal growth and efficiency, and also helps build the community (The University California, San Diego, 2015). It resembles the servant leadership style in that, both functions to serve the people for the betterment of others. In order to understand the life cycle of a drug rehab program, addicts need to learn what type of program suits their current level of addiction and their need for mental health treatment. For example, dual diagnosis facilities treat the addiction to the drug along with the mental aspects of addiction. Several categories of drug rehab programs exist that range from detoxification to long-term care.
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
This journal is a reflection of my experiences and lessons learned thus far within this course. Upon my reflecting, there were lessons that stood out the most. Also, there are nursing practices in my associate’s degree of nursing program (ADN) that correlates with the standard of care that was recently discussed. This reflection also prompt me to consider more in depth the necessary skills and attributes to become a competent nurse.
As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
