My overall experience in Intro to Human Services was phenomenal. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I loved the way it was taught and I was able to understand how human services works while reading the book Precious throughout the semester. This course isn’t an easy class that you can just relax and breeze through. It has a lot of fundamental chapters that explain the jobs of helpers also known as human service workers. I loved how we were supposed to read the chapters before class and then we would review in class. It made more sense by doing it this way. It never felt like we were rushing through the material and the pace of the class was perfect. I also loved how professor Oropall always was willing to explain …show more content…
More courses should try to incorporate 5 minutes of the class to get students focused and ready to learn. Sometimes students are too preoccupied with other problems that they do not focus on the present moment; making them less likely to focus on the course.
I took this course as an elective, I am actually a psychology major and a minor in mathematics. I would have never thought that a teacher is a part of the field of human services. My whole life I have always wanted to be a teacher so I can change children’s lives to something better. My goal as a future teacher is to be like Ms. Rain from the book Precious. I want to educate children to be a well rounded individual. I want to push them to their goals and teach them that if they put their mind into something they can always achieve it. My main goal is to teach my future students the importance of education. Especially college education because although many people do see the need of getting a college degree, it is important if you would like a well paying job. Without a college degree you could be making only minimum wage or only a little bit over the minimum wage. Someone who works many hours and still makes little to no money to
The Human Service field can be challenging to people at times and rewarding as well in other moments of one’s career. What is the Human Services field exactly? According to the National Organization for Human Services they report that “the field of Human Services is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the goal of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” (NOHS, 2009).
The clear understanding of both the role of the Human Services Worker and the role of the client in treatment.
The field of human service consists of particular goals and objectives of human needs, and it promotes improved services delivery systems by addressing the overall quality of life of service population. Similarly, Human service delivery system focuses on how human service professionals approach their work. While encompassing a broad range of idea, Human service is a unique useful and purposeful discipline aiming to assist human needs and communities through an interdisciplinary knowledge base. Human services professional is a generic term for people who hold professional and paraprofessional jobs, and it concerns to improve the quality of life of people, accessibility, accountability, and co-ordination among professional and agencies in service
Psychology is the study of how the brain functions and the responses we, as humans, have to changes around us. Upon entering my Pre-Calculus class in the eleventh grade, I quickly realized that I had been called to become a post-secondary teacher. Psychology is used in many careers such as law, nursing, medicine, and teaching. The role of teachers is unlike any other. They need to know how to maintain order throughout their classroom, commit to their students, and realize that every student is diverse in their learning needs. Before taking Psychology 2012 at Hillsborough Community College, I never realized I would use psychology in my teaching career; however, it has become so evident to me the importance of it that I am now going to minor in Psychology as well as majoring in Mathematics Education.
Continuing to study education and children psychology will contribute to my future profession because I believe teachers never stop learning and that we need to continue going to school to be able to provide excellent services to children. I think educators need to continue and not stop their studies because children need the best education and guidance. I learned in this class that educators need to be role models for children and their families and that we need to respect their culture to be able to understand them
The theory used for this case study was effective, because it was able to get P to recognise that change need to occur so the support that she received would be effective. Reflecting on action the outcome of the assessment and intervention that was applied to P’s case I used supervision and to discuss concerns I had regarding this family with my PS. Supervision helped me establish my concerns and areas I required further support in application to theory in evidence based practice ‘blind self’.
students is between twenty and fifty minutes (online). After this time frame, students are fidgety and ready to do everything except learn. Instead of trying to cover twice as much material in a longer class period, the natural tendency is to water down the material to maintain interest, resorting to movies, games, and doing homework in class. Either due to attention span limitations or to the watering down of material, learning is likely to be less effective, especially in courses such as math and science.
To provide effective social services, a social work graduate must possess a multitude of knowledge, skills and abilities. This will be a reflective paper on everything that I know for sure as a student of social work who is about to go into the world of work.
I came into this class not really knowing any more then people can get insurance and money for food from the human service department. My eyes were definitely opened those first couple weeks of class. I have realized that there is so much more that a human services worker can do. I also learned that most people who use the services are truly desperate and need help. I have learned a lot about seeing the big picture and not just what’s in front of me.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
Each student needs the teacher to give them more than five minutes of attention to them when they are in class. In the article "How important is class size?"by GreatSchools Staff “Academic gains are not the only benefit of lowering class size. A recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health revealed that reducing class sizes in elementary schools may be more cost-effective than most public health and medical interventions. This is because students in smaller classes are more likely to graduate from high school, and high school graduates earn more and also enjoy significantly better health than high school dropouts.” The article is stating that children with a group of 20 students in class a sufficient for the students. Student can ask assistants form teacher without having to wait too long than in a lager class it becomes chaotic with too many students. In a smaller classroom student comprehend much more of the lesson and this will help student in the future from dropping out for school. This will improve with funding school hiring more teachers to have a functional
Many people on this earth grow up saying they would like to make a difference in this world. However, half of those people do not feel like putting in the work in order to do so. As an elementary education major, making a difference is one of the main goals. There are many benefits of becoming a teacher, and students benefit as well. In order to have many students successfully graduate from one grade to the next a teacher should be willing to put in as much work that is needed. Elementary school is where children are set up for the rest of their education. It is important to understand how to go into this career field, becoming a teacher has its own benefits, and the children are able to benefit from teachers.
The perfect class would have to have shorter lessons. Some teachers will teach a key lesson in a short time period because they think it’s best to teach it all at once. I think that they should break important lessons into 2 or 3 smaller more comprehendible lessons. This would give teachers more time to make sure that stu-dents thoroughly understand each individual concept of the lesson. Some students are so overwhelmed and confused by one element of the lesson that they are focus-ing only on that element that the miss the rest of the lesson. This is basic modifi-cation in
I was very excited to have healthcare as the topic for my groups presentation, I’ve personally never had to deal with the logistics of healthcare or even needed to know how it worked. If I was sick I would go to the hospital or see a doctor and as long as they took my insurance, we were good to go. When we first started thinking about our topic as a group and the elements we wanted to add, we asked ourselves this: “What have we heard about healthcare but know nothing about?” the result was three main categories Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. We assumed that as a group if we knew little about these topics, then there was a good chance no one in the class did either. Some of the things I found most interesting during the process of creating
families, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. Social workers are change agents and because of that, they aim to help people develop their skills and abilities to use resources provided to them to strengthen and improve their lives and communities to resolve problems. One of the main goal of social workers is to improve the well-being and lives of the most vulnerable populations, fight against poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and the underserviced population by emphasizing on the person-in-environment and social justice model. The social work profession, considerers the individuals’ internal and external struggles, while working with the individuals to examine their relationships, family, work environment, community, and other things that might impact them and identify ways to help address problems and challenges.
