After reading chapter 5, I have learned what a refutation essay is and how to formulate one. In order to compose this type of essay, one must fully understand what a ‘refutation’ is. A refutation is when you object towards someone else’s argument rather than present your own side. Additionally, it is essential to become fully aware of your opponents given side because that can give you the upper hand in the argument. Even though this strategy can further aid you to victory, it is not as simple as disagreeing with your opponent. One must show logical evidence and give in detail why they are right.
The essay is written in a very critical style where the reader will feel like they have been wast...
In this essay, we were to evaluate the ideas proposed by the author. Isolating and analyzing the key claims within the text. This essay required us to provide justifications used by the author to support those claims and provide an analysis of the ideas. I chose a fictional text for this prompt called “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. The argument from this particular story is that everyone carries a burden. The justifications that I came up with to support this claim was Lt. Jimmy Cross’ strong infatuation with a girl named Martha and how all the soldiers carried some kind of burden, either physical or emotional. I needed to provide evidence to support these justifications. Some evidence I provided to back up the justification was how a soldier named Ted Lavender died on duty and how Lt. Cross blames himself for Ted’s death because he was concentrating more on Martha than his own crew. My feedback for this assignment wasn’t that good. I didn’t fully understand the prompt and that caused me to get a bad grade on the essay. The professor said my quotes were awkwardly used in this assignment and that I needed more cohesion between my thesis and the surrounding sentences. I noticed that I still need to work on my grammar techniques. One thing I did realize about my feedback was that I had less sentence fragments, so I count that as an improvement. It wasn’t required to make a revision memo
This course and writing these essays has drastically improved my writing capabilities. Before this course I could not write an enthymeme or effectively write an argumentative paper. Establishing a clear and strong enthymeme to a question at issues helps me organize my ideas within the body paragraphs and keeps me from becoming repetitive. I understand now that addressing a counter argument strengthens my paper and helps tell the reader that you know your topic and have strong reasons. I look forward to using the writing skills I learned in this class towards future writing opportunities either with my studies or outside of school. I will continue to use enthymemes to effectively state my claim and reason and to strengthen my argument.
2. The structure of the essay allows it to prove one point completely and then refer to another. The author talks about sloppy people
One thing that clearly helped as it would in most cases was to read the book. Not only does it provide you with quotations that helt support your thesis, but also gives you an understanding what criticisms would be appropriate to use.
The reader knows what to look for in the rest of the essay and will be more attentive when reading. She does not leave the reader hanging; the rest of the essay is distinctly laid out and easily answers all questions. The review of these essays showed that while rhetorical criticism does need to have a formal structure, there are many ways for a critic to accomplish their objectives within the confines of that basic structure. Although it is not always the best choice for every situation, I feel that a shorter, more direct approach to an introduction, as in Hyde's piece, is the most effective.
Finally, the argument must be reasonable and logical to the people who need convincing. The person who wins the argument isn’t always right, but they were able to convince an audience that they were by vouching for their character, appealing to human emotion, and by creating a reasonable and logical justification. In the essay,
One of the first skills I feel that I have gained throughout this course is the ability to prove my points in writing assignments. I feel that I have improved on making my readers know exactly the points I want to get across and the points that keep to the topic. For example, on essay number one in paragraph two, I wrote about the reasons of why I felt the stand your ground law needed to be changed or removed. To prove my point one of the reasons I spoke about was the Trayvon Martin incident, of which I felt could affect my readers on an emotional level and get readers to agree with my stance. I believe that proving your points and getting readers to accept and connect with your points is a tremendously essential aspect of writing that this course has taught me. I feel with the help of this course I have significantly improved in this aspect. Although I think essay number one was a quality paper, one regret I have on it would be not providing more history on the stand your ground law.
The assignment encourages you to write as a critical thinker. In writing an essay with an attention of an audience you need to evaluate your ideas—the thesis of your essay—and support them with appropriate evidence—your personal story. Credibility is also important in an essay and by examining the relationship among language knowledge and power the writer make the essay stronger. We also have to be able to write as a researcher, understand how to write an essay in MLA language and appropriate style. In addition to all the foregoing, with the peer review we understand the writing process, critical revision, and drafting.
What other information might the author use? Has the author remembered to acknowledge the opposition? To repeat myself: the sources are insufficient. Look for magazines, journal articles, and scholarly books. Run subject searches on InfoTrac.

‘How dare they say bad things about my paper?’ I thought to myself. From here, I went back into my essay, and looked at what they had told me were errors. It was then that I realized that they were right. My introduction needed more background information, and my evidence should have had more of an introduction.
In your own words, explain why it’s valuable to include the opposition in your essay. (1 paragraph, 6 sentences)

Thinking back to when we first started this class I never paid much attention to fallacies, how specific you need to be with making a poll. Another thing I learned a lot from was annotating. The assignment I enjoyed the most was ‘Logical Fallacies Presentation’ I’ve always loved watching TV and it is kind of funny and interesting that fallacies were always there, but they went unnoticed for me. Now here there I watch commercials and sitcoms I notice them and it just makes it that much funnier. I enjoyed this assignment in class because a lot of us classmates had funny ones or we thought a like and pulled up similar ones and they were all fun and entertaining
