Neat people vs. Sloppy people
Yalda Mostafaie
1. The thesis of the essay is stated at the end of the first paragraph. The author says,
“ Neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people”. The placement of the thesis is very important because whether you agree or disagree with the thesis you will continue to read. This attracts the reader to want to know more about what the author has to say about their thesis and how they will prove it with facts. One can continue on reading because they think the author is very wrong while another can continue on reading because they completely agree with the author.
2. The structure of the essay allows it to prove one point completely and then refer to another. The author talks about sloppy people

at first for almost half of the essay and then moves onto talking about neat people and their habits. The author uses the characteristics of both sloppy people and neat people to support her thesis and she does this by talking about each individually. 3.
The essay’s thesis is trying to imply that neat people are lazier and meaner and don’t pay any attention to the little things in life. The only part of the essay where the author compares sloppy people and neat people is in paragraph eight. The author says “ The only thing messy in a neat person’s house is the trash can”. This line helps the author build up on her thesis even though it’s implying the exact opposite of what her thesis was. She mentioned earlier that sloppy people care about detail and pay attention to their surroundings while neat people only keep the things that are worth keeping. She then states that sloppy people care enough to sit down for days and go through every single thing on their desk, finding a spot for each and maybe even throw out the things that they don’t need but neat people simply throw everything out. One can say that when reading the sentence that refers to the trashcan being the only messy thing in a neat persons house is quite sarcastic. The author tries to compare these two types of people together and maybe for a second even disagree with her thesis while in reality one can say that she’s just trying to use irony and sarcasm to prove how ridiculous a neat persons actions could be and how they think that they’re cleaning everything up while maybe in reality they’re just making it
worse. 4. A) the line “ Someday they will sit down and read all the back issues of the New Yorker” has a strong sense of allusion. One can say that the author is trying to imply and hint that “Sloppy people” are not necessarily people who are not intelligent. The author uses this rhetorical device to imply and in a way hint but not directly say “ Sloppy people are just as smart as neat people”. She wants to take advantage of this term to indicate what she means without actually having to say it. Anyone who knows about the magazine New Yorker knows that it is a very hard magazine to read and that not many understand the concept of it. This is why she uses the name New Yorker, she wants to imply that sloppy people are not less than neat people but rather maybe in someway even smarter and better, which better proves and supports her thesis. One other great allusion is when the author mentions that sloppy people live in a “never never land” this creates an allusion because it’s the land of peter pan where no one grows up and lives happily ever after. The author uses this line to make the reader think of their part and childhood and create a connection. b) The anaphora in paragraph number three is the word “someday”. The author uses this word to emphasis the habits of sloppy people. She repeats the words many times to add emphasis to the point that she’s trying to prove and to make a rhythm. This is very efficient because the rhythm makes it very enjoyable for the reader while the emphasis on the word makes the reader want to continue reading. c) Parallel structure is used many times in paragraph four. The author uses this rhetorical term to help organize her ideas and make the text easier to understand. One great example of this term being used in paragraph four is “But while these ambitious plans take clearer and clearer shape in their heads, the books spill from the shelves onto the floor, the clothes pile up in the hamper and closet, the family mementos accumulate in every drawer, the surface of the desk is buried under the mounds of paper and the unread magazines threaten to reach the celling” in this part of the essay it can be seem that the author is using propositional phrases over and over again. She refers to the plans take clearer and clear in their heads and books spill from the shelves onto the floors and so on. By doing this she attracts their reader and their attention to want to read more. This also very neatly organized the essay and creates a beautiful structure. d) The one phrase in paragraph seven that is a slang is when the author says “what they want to do is get the whole thing over with so they can sit down and watch rasslin’ on TV” this is a slang because the author is no longer using formal English to express her thoughts. She uses what is called Standard English to connect with the reader. This action is very efficient because on a daily basis people don’t talk in a formal prestige language. They talk in Standard English using slangs. This helps the reader connect this to his or her life and wonder if they do the same. One can say that it helps the reader have a more clear understanding of why the author think neat people are insensitive and selfish. e) The author implies hyperbole when she states that neat people are “wasteful”. This sentence carries a strong sense of irony. She starts by explain and proving that neat people have an obsession with throwing out almost everything so they have no waste near them while when they do throw out things that can be useful and are ruined, they make the world a messier place. She uses this rhetorical term to help her prove that neat people only think they’re keeping everything clean while all they’re doing is moving things from one place to another. She exaggerates this fact by giving examples after and also mentions before that neat people are so obsessed with being clean that they put cleanness before economics. This of course maybe true for some neat people but in general is an over exaggeration for her to prove her thesis and support her idea. f) The author uses the word excavation to emphasis her point. She’s trying to prove her point about how sloppy people can clean everything up and that they wont give up until everything is clean. She uses the word excavation to prove that they will clean absolutely everything in depth and will not miss one thing. They will spend all the time that’s needed to clean up a particular place and they wont leave it alone until it’s completely clean. 5. The author doesn’t have a full conclusion. She leaves the reader with facts about both sloppy people and neat people and lets them decide if they agree with her thesis or not. Students learn to use the essay structure taught in school to write essays which is very efficient but sometimes it’s good to make the reader think. To leave somethings unsaid and let the readers write their own conclusion and ending. This type of structure leaves the reader with facts and habits that compares and contrasts sloppy neat from neat people and in the end let’s the reader decide if they agree or disagree with her thesis. Some questions or thought that can cross ones mind is “ will a neat person sell their dog because of fleas or send their child to boarding school because they will leave marks on the hardwood floors?” the sloppy people will never know I guess.

In The Norton Mix, Suzanne Britt’s “Neat People vs. Sloppy People,” Bruce Catton’s “Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts,” and Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Cultural Baggage,” all compare and contrast people or things in the stories. It is important for the author to clearly distinguish what he or she is saying, because it allows the reader to understand the story better. Comparing and contrasting different things is also a way to organize the author’s thoughts. It is important for the reader to be able to see the difference between things or people so one can have a more suitable understanding, better insight, and a firm viewpoint of the subject.
The way the writer wrote this essay is known as informal writing. He used many facts and statistics to help prove his points. David Theo Goldberg was able to put all the rhetorical methods together to make this a really well formed piece of writing. This way Goldberg was able to supports his thoughts and facts by using
To add on, her ending paragraph only refers to her personal experience. Not necessarily returning to her thesis in the conclusion. Although, returning to her own personal experience is an appeal to ethos and to her personal credibility, this is very efficient in the introduction. In the conclusion statement her argument loses the strength and credibility that the topic initially introduced which results in her argument sounding somewhat
Suzanne Britt, a teacher at Meredith College and a publisher in essays and textbooks, in her essay “Neat People vs. Sloppy People,” (1983) asserts that people who live cluttered lives are morally better than those who live organized lives. She supports this assertion by using humor and exaggeration to describe both types of people, making generalizations about both sloppy and neat people, repeating “sloppy people” and “neat people” at beginning, and throughout, each paragraph, and illustrating situations in how neat and sloppy people would act differently, along with using her opinion to strengthen her argument. Britt’s purpose is to persuade readers that sloppy, unorganized people are more morally upstanding than neat people in order to encourage
College has always been a process that introduces students to academic challenges that are not present during high school. So when my professor assigned Gerald Graff's essay, "Hidden Intellectualism", I thought this was his thesis. “Missing the opportunity to tap into such street smarts and channel them into good academic work." (Graff 142) I thought that this was his thesis because it explains the main idea of the essay but I assumed its purpose because of where it’s placed. I am so used to reading an essay in high school where the thesis is located right in the first paragraph. So naturally that is where I look for it. However, with more reading I knew that the following is the thesis, not only because it discusses the main topic, but because it clearly shows what the author was making his argument about. "But [students] would be more prone to take on intellectual identities if we encouraged them to do so at first on subjects that interest them rather than the ones that interest us". (Graff 199) Your thesis is one of the major aspects of a good college paper because it shows exactly what the main claim of the entire paper is going to be about. Three main points to take out of a thesis is, is it your main claim or big idea that directly answers a question about the assignment of the paper. Is it written with the reader in mind with a road map they could follow along easily and lastly when you do go back through revising and reflecting does it makes your thesis clearer.
2. You should use quotes throughout your paper and not just in the beginning. Your last few paragraphs do not have any support from the novel itself.
Britt uses this quality, to make neat people inferior to sloppy people, is when she states, “Neat people are bums and clods at heart. They have cavalier attitudes toward possessions.” (234).
He even lists the two objectives that his essay will accomplish, which are explained later under headings that bear the same name as the stated objectives.... ... middle of paper ... ... The question/answer method is effective in this essay because it gives the reader something to prepare for.
Have you ever imagined the world, buildings, people, being all the same? Many people are similar in so many ways, but they do not notice because they are picking out the differences in the world. However, many people have unique differences that make people special and different. In “Sloppy People vs. Neat People,” the author Suzanne Britt writes about how she believes neat people are lazy and rude. While sloppy people have ambitions to clean but when they do clean the mess just gets worse. In the other article “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out,” the author Dave Barry writes how women can see the smallest specks of dirt and make a big deal about how the bathroom is a mess. While men make a big deal about sports, when sport games are on, men
Leo Szilard structured his petition in a way that was an easy to follow and navigate argument. While a thesis statement is typically found at the beginning of a paper in
The author Suzanne Britt did a comparison between sloppy and neat people on their daily life routine. She conveyed her disgust against neat people by describing them as a bum, wasteful and uncaring. She added that neat people like to spend an extraneous amount of money on unimportant things such as buying new furniture and not looking for a bargain. Especially, grocery shopping that neat people are not using a coupon order to save money. Also, neat people are insensitive to others and they will ignore others well-being.
3. Your paper should be organized so that each point, or each character is discussed in a separate paragraph and you stick to that character until you have fully discussed him or her.
are going to say about your topic. Thesis statements often come at the end of the introductory paragraph. This
The two girls are the best of friends but they are very different, even in the views on how they clean. Sandra is very neat and tidy. Everything must be in its place at all times. Nancy on the other hand is extremely messy. Wherever things happen to land is where they should belong. Sandra cleans her room at least once a day. While Nancy's room is lucky to be cleaned once a month. When Sandra cleans, it is a lengthy procedure. Sometimes she will spend hours just cleaning her room. When Nancy cleans, it is done as quickly as humanly possible. If she can get everything shoved under her bed in five minutes then she is happy. The thought of even sleeping in a messy room makes Sandra extremely uncomfortable. Though Nancy can't stand to be in a spotless room, with out the urge to mess something up.
