Three of your favorite or best activities that occurred throughout the semester. Thinking back to when we first started this class I never paid much attention to fallacies, how specific you need to be with making a poll. Another thing I learned a lot from was annotating. The assignment I enjoyed the most was ‘Logical Fallacies Presentation’ I’ve always loved watching TV and it is kind of funny and interesting that fallacies were always there, but they went unnoticed for me. Now here there I watch commercials and sitcoms I notice them and it just makes it that much funnier. I still have a lot more room for developing my critical thinking and reading. It can always expand my mind with it. I can use critical thinking in many different places or scenarios. When I’m at work whether it being a problem and us trying to solve the solution or trying to direct a customer towards the right item if they are stuck between two different ones. I can use critical thinking when trying to decide something with my boyfriend, a friend and family member it’s about weighing options out and thinking about possible outcomes. I read a book every here and there and I kind of before just read the book and waited to see what would happen. I believe that if I start reading a book and analyzing at the same time it’ll make it more interesting and fun to think of different conclusions and understanding the storyline more and why the characters are the way they are. Rereading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Thinking and Writing written by; Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle, Eighth Edition, published April, 2007 by Bedford/St. Martin’s, is a textbook about writing and critical thinking. In the first chapter of Rereading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Thinking and Writing, “Thinking Critically, Challenging Cultural Myths”, the Authors begin by setting a relatable scene of what it’s like for a college student. How a new found independence can be overwhelming, especially with regards to critical thinking, showing that what we have learned, needs to be re-evaluated and that an open mind in essential. "What Is Critical Thinking" In this section of the chapter the editors explain what it means to be a critical thinker. They explain that critical thinking is not just studying dates and facts, but rather taking those facts and examining them. A critical thinker takes all aspects into account and reflects on personal experience as well. The editors also point out that different cultural experiences bring different opinions. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Today, I want to demonstrate that “the crucible” by Arthur Miller in 1953 is not just a play for 1953, but a play that relates to any period of time, notably to our modern society. The crucible is an allegory of 1953 McCarthyism and social chaos of the time. Today’s government manipulated the truth creates the fear of “outlawed bikies gangs” similar to 1692 theocratic government creates fear of witches and McCarthy’s communist terror. Unfortunately, the truth is never clear cut, but skewed, twisted and sculpted lies that shockingly benefit a small governing body and its ideologies. Therefore, ‘The Crucible’ is a worthwhile play to be shown in Queensland Theatre as it reminds us of an invaluable lesson and could prevent the same foolish action reoccurring on future generations. The play intertwines with significant themes such as lies, truth, power, stereotypes and mass hysteria which are pivotal dynamics in today’s society.
There are many times in life people use fallacies but do not recognize it. Fallacies are arguments that use poor reasoning. Some fallacies are devoted deliberately to manipulate or persuade by deception. Then there are other fallacies that are unintentionally due to carelessness or obliviousness. “Strictly speaking, it refers only to the transition from a set of premises to a conclusion, and is distinguished from falsity, a value attributed to a single statement. (The Columbia Encyclopedia)” Three fallacies in thinking are hasty generalizations, post hoc, and contradictory premises.
In order to improve my critical thinking skill, I have kept analyzing at least one question I search from the internet every day since February 2016. I analyze the question in serval steps: to state the problem as clearly and precisely, to figure out the logic of the problem by identifying its elements, to carefully analyze and interpret the information I collect, to figure out and evaluate different options/actions, to choose the best option. This method helps me a lot in coursework. Now, I am reading the book “Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication” which is written by Melissa Goodwin and Catherine Sommervold. This book discusses different ways and strategies of 3Cs. It provides me different strategies in critical thinking and how to apply strategies to the real world. As I am reading this book, I apply some strategies when I solve questions, I feel it gets better and easier for me, but I still have a lot to learn and improve. One strategy I learn is to use mind mapping to help clarify and organize my thoughts/ideas. According to my research, some articles suggest me to read various types of book to become more knowledgeable which will be helpful in both critical thinking and problem solving. Now, I am still looking for books to read after I finish reading “Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication.” Additionally, I am going to talk to an instructor in the coming fall term to ask for guidance and suggestion in order to improve critical thinking
Questions are something that must be asked and can be very important when reading a literary work, watching a movie, or just simply trying to understand the habits of people today. Asking questions opens up the human brain to dig farther and deeper into the meaning of why someone did something in a specific way and what purpose it has that something must be done in that way. After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. I have gained some insight from certain readings. "Who Shall I Be" really struck me in a good way. It talks about the reality of positive and negative consequences resulting from some sort of change. Changes can be dangerous at times. Not physically, but mentally. I guess it could be physical in some situations. I feel I have become a more mature reader since high school. Reading experience leads to reading success. That’s my opinion. I used to not be able to focus when I read, but you just have to stick it out and read and read and read. I feel I am a focused reader now, I try hard. I have also gained mental reading confidence. You break that down.
In this course I have learned and written many essays from as small as reading responses to writing an argumentative paper. All the essays had a similar style of writing and that is that it had to have a thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion except for the major assignments like LEN, Argumentative Paper, Lit Review, and etc., which required more than just those three elements to writing the essay. I prefer one type of writing style to another because it lets me see the difference in my writing and if there are improvements in my writing. I do see similarities in the different essays I wrote and they are that my thesis statements are not strong enough, which is why my essays are not strong enough. Choosing a good thesis statement and having good body paragraphs are crucial to writing essays because that is the key part of the essay, which I needed work on all semester.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. This is a very important still to learn to become an effective thinker and making educated choices. Critical thinking is fundamental when making choices, from selecting the right answer on multiple choice exams to choosing the right place and time to buy a house. There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. It is not everyday when you can say the majority of your college class is you talking and the teacher listening, this is seminar. Coming from a family where heated debates were present almost daily, I already know if I were passionate about a topic I would never pass up an opportunity to express my opinions. For me, seminar has allowed me to grow in this confidence of expressing my thoughts as well as learning from others opinions. Having come from a high school that stressed the importance of student participation, I was not surprised by the amount I would actually have to speak in this class, however I was surprised by the importance of disagreements and the proper way to analyze text through underlining, highlighting and questioning and how it could aid my overall understanding of a text. Being a psychology major and extremely interested in social justice issues, seminar also opened my eyes up to the interesting perspectives of the strength of human nature.
