Self – reflective journal is a personal record of student’s learning experiences, which can then be used to explore and analyse ways of thinking, record and reflect upon his observations and responses to situations and can also contain images, drawings, visuals and other types of reference materials.
There's an old saying "you don't know what you know till you've written it down" - and several research studies have found this to be true. According to Boud. D., et al. (1985) “Reflection is an important human activity in which people recapture their accumulated knowledge, think about it, mull over and evaluate it. It is this working with experience that is important in learning”.
I am student at BSc Business Management and in the following reflective
The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
Define what metacognitive or reflective writing is. What are some of the prompts or “topics” for reflective writing?
During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better writer this way.
For the study, writing a reflective learning journal helps me: bring together theory and practice and yield better understanding of the course material while for my development as a successful and independent learner, it helps me: See my strength and weakness
Thinking that I was strong minded and never looking at the negatives, ones suspicions changed my whole mind setting. After an endless wait in the mournful waiting room of the hospital, my name was called. The nurse brought us to Dr. Yazay's office where he confirmed his suspicions, and so began my life with scoliosis. Since the age of eight I have been swimming. I was a competitive swimmer for nine years, and now had to deal with a life without the activities I felt defined my identity. The treatment for my scoliosis involved wearing the most uncomfortable thing in the world which was a brace. With several restrictions on my physical activity, I had an abundance of free time on my hands.
Reflection is a key element of the human learning process. It can be used to justify aspects of practice and legitimise the knowledge gained from it, as opposed to traditional forms of learning.
When I was working at long term care, I was being a part of an incident which gave me a life time lesson. I was taking care of ninety-nine years old lady Mrs.Chang. I was assisting Mrs. Chang in transferring from bed to wheelchair. I feel Mrs. Chang physically so weak so I need someone’s sustenance. I was looking for someone and I saw a nurse in next resident’s room who was dressing a wound of resident Mr. Roger. I call the nurse to give me a hand. She rushes into Mrs.Chang room without washing her hand or using hand sanitizer to assist me in transfer. I was jolted for a moment and couldn’t say anything to the nurse. Then I felt it was too late to say anything to the nurse.
student. In the following journal, we see the benefit of reflective practice and what it achieves
Compassion, respect, empathy, and treating people with dignity are values I hold dear and have been brought up with and follow. When I was younger I thought as children do, that all children must be happy and have a safe place to live and a family who love them, however, as I got older I realised that this was not the case for many children. I felt a sense of injustice and realised then that I wanted to work in a job that helps care for children/young people and families, making sure their basic rights are met and they are safe. I feel that it has always been part of my personality to be a supportive, nurturing, caring and a community focused individual. Therefore it only seems natural for me to follow this instinctive sense of caring and
Reflection is a key part of our personal development plan that is significant from both academic and employment perspectives. It investigates and someway measures our present level of skills and knowledge by looking back to reflect our latest performance and monitoring future improvements (Gallagher K., 2013, p. 23-24).
Learning the art of reflecting while an activity is taking place, or after it, is a skill that requires several steps of progression. Ultimately understanding the process of reflection can help coaches refine their coaching strategies and incorporate those strategies at each stage (becoming a better coach through reflective practice, 2016).
(Howard & Lyons, 2014, p152) Being able to reflect on an experience including how you responded or felt and how you might do things differently if it were to happen again can help us to work through such situations. This can involve looking back and asking questions such as, ‘why did I feel like that?’ and ‘was there something I could do differently if it happened again? ‘Boud (2001 as cited by Moore et al 2011, p545) ‘describes reflection as the process of turning experience into learning that involves making sense out of what has occurred in our lives.’ Reflection can also be useful in terms of learning from experience and so help towards self-care and self-development. ‘Reflective skill is described as an ability to identify personal errors and make evidence-based decisions. Self-awareness and reflective skills are closely related in which self-reflection involves learning processes, whereas self-awareness becomes the objective of the process.’ (Siraj, Salam, Azmina, Chong, Saidatul, Faiz, Murnira, Kang & Nabishah, 2013,
The knowledge within individuals continues to grow and develop throughout life. Reflection is the process of looking back on an incident while thinking and analyzing the result of different possibilities. An individual’s level of knowledge increases with the use of reflection because reflection enables individuals to identify their learning needs and to better their judgement based on previous experiences. This paper will describe a nursing student’s reflection on an event that occurred in the clinical setting. This paper will explain and explore how an experience changes one’s ways of knowing, including aesthetic knowing, personal knowing, empirical knowing, ethical knowing, reflexivity, as well as insights gained
Self assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses. I plan on using this course to enhance my personal skills to become a better student and find success in earning my Bachelor of Arts degree at Ashford University in Social Science. Self Assessment is the first step in my successful future.
