Compassion, respect, empathy, and treating people with dignity are values I hold dear and have been brought up with and follow. When I was younger I thought as children do, that all children must be happy and have a safe place to live and a family who love them, however, as I got older I realised that this was not the case for many children. I felt a sense of injustice and realised then that I wanted to work in a job that helps care for children/young people and families, making sure their basic rights are met and they are safe. I feel that it has always been part of my personality to be a supportive, nurturing, caring and a community focused individual. Therefore it only seems natural for me to follow this instinctive sense of caring and …show more content…
supporting others by continuing my academic studies in social care work. I am presently studying BTEC Health and Social Care, I have found this course to be very informative and challenging but also enjoyable too.
I have enjoyed the modules on development through the life stages and equality, diversity and rights in health and social care. In particular learning about development through life stages opened my mind to the debate of Nature vs Nurture, and introduced me to different factors that affect human development. Throughout my course, I have shown that I am capable of researching when writing essays and completing them within …show more content…
deadlines. During my studies, my chosen work placement was working as a volunteer assistant with an organisation called Muslim Women’s Network UK for eight months, researching and building a list of relevant contacts and safe centres in the UK that catered for women and children who were in need of support. During my time with MWNUK, the organisation was setting up the first Muslim Women’s Helpline, which was launched in Jan 2015. I also helped in an administrative capacity during this new project. In my work placement I was also fortunate to access staff training on issues such as Forced Marriage, Domestic Violence, FGM, Islamophobia, Discrimination and Mental Health. I also had the opportunity to attend training run by The Samaritans specifically on how to deal with suicidal callers and members of family’s recovering from a loved one’s suicide. This year, I was successfully selected, to take part in Brightside NHS online Mentoring project. It involved one-to-one mentoring with a staff member of NHS, I was given the opportunity to complete online activities to help me improve various skills such as research and team building skills, I found this project to be very beneficial as it helped me to gain an understanding of careers provided through the NHS. Growing up, I have always been encouraged to do my best, 'if at first you don't succeed try, try and try again', this life motto my mum passed down to me helping me to grow into a determined strong person.
I have always been quite shy in personality, but over the years with support of my family and good friends I have overcome my shyness and can now confidently say that I feel comfortable to face a challenge. I believe I have grown in confidence and feel I am a sociable person, who is easily approachable and a good listener, I always try to be available and supportive for my friends and family when they need me. My interests lie in working with children/young people and families, I believe my natural desire to want to help and enable others in vulnerable and difficult situations are qualities that will suit a career in social care work. It is for this reason that I want to continue my studies in Social care work and hope that it will help give me an opportunity to make a difference in positively transforming people’s
lives.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
...l in an urban area. When working closely with students in the past, it was difficult knowing that I could provide extensive support but didn’t have the expertise. I 've explored different careers involving help children and their families but it always led back to social work. As a graduate student, I expect to be challenged as a student and a professional. I expect to learn all the different theories, practices and policies in place to properly help students. I look forward to the combination of coursework and practicums to enhance my skills. In retrospect, practicums can be the most challenging areas. To overcome this challenge, I’ve observed the school social worker at my current position and have developed a better understanding of the daily responsibilities. I am confident that I will succeed and to be able to help and advocate for students through social work.
I value equality above all, I believe that everyone is entitled to the same benefits, opportunities and treatment. I believe this value has come from being raised in a single parent family and witnessing first had some of the struggles my mother had in raising us and getting access to services. I can only begin to imagine how difficult things must be for families from lower socio-economic backgrounds and for people in isolated communities and nations. Coming from such a tightknit family, love is my second core value. When referring to love, I mean not only mature love with a partner, but love for family, friends and the entire human race. Respect is another of my core values, McAuliffe (2014, p.3) suggests that respect encompasses a variety of aspects such as treating someone well, allowing them to have autonomy, taking note of things affecting them, and acknowledging that they may hold different views to our own. This I something that I have learned mostly from my father who has demonstrated that every person is deserving of respect, he opened my eyes to so much more of the world and allowed me to realise that it is ok for people to have different views and that that does not make them any less of a person. I also place great value on being selfless, not completely selfless as we need to care for ourselves, but a significant amount of selflessness and caring for others. This is a value that I have seen in many members of my family, again, mostly from my father and the time and effort he has put into helping not only me, but friends, family, colleagues, and people he barely knows. Closely linked with selflessness, my final core value is compassion. My father not only showed selflessness with a range of people, but also compassion. Whitebrook suggests “compassion not only requires emotional engagement with someone who is vulnerable but also acting on that emotion” (as cited

Iam a motivated, adaptable and responsible student who has the temperament, key skills and knowledge that are essential for the social work sector, with room for improvement. I have worked in the care industry for a quite long time now as support worker with Richmond council. I look after the physical and mental well-being of vulnerable adults in care. My main tasks are checking each resident’s needs and progress, providing physical care; which includes bathing, toileting, dressing, and feeding. More to that, creating safe and positive living environment, providing one to one counselling or group therapy sessions, teaching daily skills such as budgeting, shopping and claiming benefits.
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.

Social work is a broad profession which influences many areas of society and there are many experiences, beliefs, frustrations and hopes that have brought me to the point of starting a journey to become a social worker. From a young age my family has been a huge influence in my life. I am the oldest child with three younger siblings who have been and still are my closest friends. Growing up in a tight knit family I developed a keen desire to see children across Australia and the world included and accepted into loving homes rather than institutions. Being the oldest child, I also have a heightened sense of responsibility and have always wanted to use my life to bring some form of positive change.
Becoming a social worker would be the greatest and rewarding achievement I could ever accomplish. The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. (Australian Association of Social Workers, 2016, para. 2).The area I’m interested to work in is Child Abuse and young people with disability because of personal experience. One of my major inspiration through her quote is (Mother Teresa 2001) “If you can 't feed a hundred people, then feed just one". I connect with this quote because I know I can never change the whole world but I can make a different in one-person life. After I completed year 12 of high school education I wasn’t sure is social work was for me. I decided to do a diploma of community service to get more idea of what social work do. Studying a diploma of community motivated me more to pursue a career as a social worker. This essay will reflect on my past experience and the things motivated me the most to become social work practitioner. This reflection will discuss the values, beliefs as social worker.

Today is the second session that I had counselor with this particle client. He came in to see me for the same problem that he had before. But except this time client had be doing a little than before. Before I started with the interview I had use the five stages and dimension of the interviews a client. I want to have an empathic relationship with my client, and gathering story and find the strength of my client is part of getting to know my client. This time I had set a realistic goal that my client can work toward without feeling that he is not in control of making the decision. The next is stage restoring finding what is not working now and trying to find an alternative that will work then take the action of letting the client go or
The work of a social worker is complex and all encompassing. Social workers work in many capacities seeking justice, liberation, and equality. There work is global, as they work to put policies in place to govern practices. To keep up with societal shifts and generational changes there learning is continuous. As new questions rise so does the need for the continuation of research, not only to answer these questions but to implement into
People all over the world have accomplished things that made them who they are today. Overcoming shyness was a huge accomplishment and something that was very significant to me that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood.
