Reflective Practical Journal as a Student Nurse Experience
When I was working at long term care, I was being a part of an incident which gave me a life time lesson. I was taking care of ninety-nine years old lady Mrs.Chang. I was assisting Mrs. Chang in transferring from bed to wheelchair. I feel Mrs. Chang physically so weak so I need someone’s sustenance. I was looking for someone and I saw a nurse in next resident’s room who was dressing a wound of resident Mr. Roger. I call the nurse to give me a hand. She rushes into Mrs.Chang room without washing her hand or using hand sanitizer to assist me in transfer. I was jolted for a moment and couldn’t say anything to the nurse. Then I felt it was too late to say anything to the nurse.

I should comfort the nurse and ask to do hand hygiene and taught advantages of hand hygiene. Marram (2009) stated that healthcare professional team needs to constant communicate to plan strategies, solve problems and evaluate progress (pg.28-30). I learn that health professional team needs excellent interaction to provide excellent care of resident. According to Smith (2015), “leadership can successful by fair conversation with healthcare provider, staff, p-patient, regulator and insurance company. Without conversation, there is no management, without management; there is no success in our healthcare system”.
From this situation, I will still preserve my quick acting assertively with my colleges to ensure that the nurse washed hand before entering resident’s room. My silent can put resident’s health at risk. I should have a positive attitude toward the nurse and talking to her about the mistake she made in her practice. The patient is a female in her early twenties who came in the hospital due to sickle cell crisis. She was in grave pain especially in the joints. Her hemoglobin level was low so the Physician ordered 2 bags of packed red blood cells and pain meds Q4hrs. The patient explained many times that the dose the physician ordered was not sufficient and that she needed more help. The nurse promised to contact the physician and to inform her of the response. The fact is she never did and was called urgently hours after to calm her patient who was crying in agony and wanted to go home to be in pain. She screamed out that no one cared. The issue was a very serious one because it is clearly stipulated in the nursing code of ethics that the nurse must always make the patient feel safe and ensure the patient’s safety by doing things like lowering and raising the bed height as is required. In my case, the bed height had been temporarily raised by the nurse and I was expected to lower it back to its original height. To give quality nursing care to patients, I will give good personal hygiene care by assisting patients who need it and promoting the independence of patients that can see to their personal care. Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. The world loves to see great organizations that are known for their achievement and meeting their goals and putting smiles on other people/patients faces. Healthy work environments make sure that they show each other great communication with whatever they do inside the workplace. It is a good thing for all workers inside of any workplace of health to practice speaking to each other during procedures and especially during any breaks. This together forms special bonds and chemistry. When there is great chemistry between workers, they feel way more comfortable with the decisions and are less likely to make bad decisions or make mistakes because of not feeling like they are doing the right thing. All of this is just a more broad way of saying collaborative relationships, and promote decision making among all nurses is so important. Uncomfortable workers will always feel that they cannot do anything on their own. So most of the time when they do not feel like they can do something on their own they would normally try and leave to get assistance from another worker or just act very hesitant. No patient wants assistance from a worker that doesn’t feel comfortable. So that is why workers should communicate with each other, and not want to feel bothered. Workers would then learn to freely go around and keep the place clean. Sweeping, sanitizing, and being very precautious is what people love to see when stepping in because unhealthy work environments can have adverse consequences on the quality of care delivered as well as nurses intention to leave the profession. Workers wouldn’t want to work in a profession that has an unhealthy work environment because they are just as careful with other people’s lives just as they are with theirs.
