Mesa Community College is a big community, and a perfect site to implement any service learning because the choices are numerous. I have been part of this Community College for the last two years, and I felt that I could do something for it, but I was not sure what. It had to be a study and service related with students and technology. At the time of the decision, I was reading a book about how technology and personal devices are leading in the lack of conversation, and is also interfering in interpersonal relationships in society, specially in young people. I was observing students at campus, and classmates at classrooms, and it was true, people go and back through the campus and classrooms as robots, without look at each other, or even saying anything. I thought that a Conversation Club would be a good idea for having students talking with their peers for one hour, being aside of devices. Then I thought that it would be a good idea having the Conversation in Spanish, since Spanish is my mother tongue. This would provide not only conversation to students, also the opportunity of improving their skill in Spanish, and the opportunity of meeting other people from different countries and different cultures around the world. Mesa Community College has a multicultural community, with students from all around the world, and this club would take the opportunity to bring different …show more content…
I was so happy and excited preparing all the documentation in order to begin with the Club. I just have one fear, that people would not be interesting in expending one hour “just” talking. But I though that I had to continue with it, I had to try it. Many times in my live I stopped doing things because I though there were not going to work. But this time was different, it was an assignment, and I had to continue with it, even if nobody attend to
important issues, gain new perspectives and provides learning experiences for volunteers as well as individuals from underserved groups. Because of the numerous benefits, college students should enroll in the Service Learning courses or service learning based programs. These programs allows students to move away from the dualism versus unity point of view and focus on reciprocity and provides the skills necessary to approach future service experiences with a service learning perspective.
I have always had a strong belief that I could pass college like I did in high school. Always relying on those quick study sessions before a test or having the teacher going over the material right before a test. But boy was I wrong. In my first test I learned the hard way that studying is essential in college.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Thinking that I was strong minded and never looking at the negatives, ones suspicions changed my whole mind setting. After an endless wait in the mournful waiting room of the hospital, my name was called. The nurse brought us to Dr. Yazay's office where he confirmed his suspicions, and so began my life with scoliosis. Since the age of eight I have been swimming. I was a competitive swimmer for nine years, and now had to deal with a life without the activities I felt defined my identity. The treatment for my scoliosis involved wearing the most uncomfortable thing in the world which was a brace. With several restrictions on my physical activity, I had an abundance of free time on my hands.

When I first started to think about what I’m going to do for my service learning project, I wanted to learn more about deaf people and the education they are taught. I soon realized that this wasn’t broad enough and made it broader to just plain education. With this is mind it led me to Mars Hill Elementary school working with the children on math. The children were glad to have me there and loved the new perspective on the problems then what they already have. When I was working there I was focusing on how the teachers were constructing their class rooms and how the kids were responding. The teachers were teaching their children in one big group and all the kids were sitting in a circle and were shouting out the answers. I could tell these children were receiving th...
A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there, and what I ultimately learned from this experience.
As I shoved my notebook into my backpack, I heard my writing fellow murmur something about an essay. I wasn’t worried. After taking every Advanced Placement English class my high school offered, I felt equipped to handle a simple essay until received Dr. Carver’s email with the prompt and instructions. I blinked at the screen and rubbed my eyes; thinking I had misread the message, I read it again. I was supposed to have the essay finished in approximately 42 hours, but I had never written a decent essay in less than four days. I was in a state of panic; all of my ideas had evacuated my imagination leaving me with a painful case of writer’s block. To me, most of good writing is good editing and proper editing requires having a window to forget your writing before returning to it: a window that 42 hours just couldn’t provide.
this area but I’m going to improve on it. The process of using multiple drafts has
Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
Online communication host’s unique opportunities for education but the time lapses, absence of social, visual and auditory cues create a communication handicap. The diversity of community college provides unique opportunities for intercultural relationships as well as intercultural challenges hoping to meet different goals, and come from different backgrounds
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
Service-learning has been praised by faculty and students alike for the increased feelings of social awareness and civic responsibility it gives to those who participate. Research in the field by scholars such as Thomas Deans and Bruce Herzberg attest that students are more motivated and report a higher sense of engagement in course work, and faculty believe their students are gaining important skills such as listening and considering multiple perspectives, becoming better prepared for their roles as democratic citizens.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
The learning environment connects the classroom to the community through a democratic approach. This community based learning brings the world into the classroom so students can implement social change and challenge social inequalities. The curriculum focuses on student experience and taking social action on real problems such as hunger, violence, and discrimination. It is important to instruct students to explore in group settings so they can work together to analyze and develop theories that can help each other and make a real different in the world. As a future educator, it is important to not only to teach my students the issues in our world, but how we can work together to find
