From celebrity twitter feuds, to Facebook bullying the online world is rife with conflict. Online classrooms are no different from these online jungles, where words can be easily misconstrued in the low-context environment of computer-mediated-communication (CMC). Conflicting values are imminent in diverse group settings, but online-only, low context communication leads to increased conflict. The first line of defense for managing conflict is the use of online mediation. A secondary line of defense for resolving conflict and preventing future conflict is to change the textual communication to face-to-face communication using video conferencing technology, in addition to building awareness around conflict management styles. Several strategies can be used to reduce and end conflict. In discussing potential conflict between students in a community college online class, I will examine value conflict between five women from diverse backgrounds who have had none to little contact with each other independent of the online environment. Michelle Charisse Munyer was born on October 26th, 1978 in Sacramento, CA and has lived in the bay area since she was 12. She has been attending classes at BCC since 2010, after she suffered an accident, which left her unable to work. Although she never graduated from High School, she is graduating from BCC with two AA’s in Fine Art and Liberal Art’s A&H. Berlena Gullett was born in St. Pierce, Florida and is the youngest girl out of her nine siblings. She grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey but has lived in Texas, Arizona, Florida and now currently resides in California. As a child she lived in a group home until she was emancipated at age eighteen. In the classroom, the teacher commonly acts as the moderator of the forum, but in other online communities the moderator is usually a third party individual who may not been interculturally competent. The diversity of community college provides unique opportunities for intercultural relationships as well as intercultural challenges hoping to meet different goals, and come from different backgrounds Works Cited Ott, Marvin C. Knowing that the visual anonymity of computer-mediated communication may reduce face threat and make individuals more likely to disclose information to others, individuals may feel more comfortable expressing their emotions through computer-mediated communication during a conflict (Joinson, 2011). The level of face perception a person wants to obtain depends on the conflict management and resolution strategies the person uses.... ... middle of paper ... ... Internet forums and chat rooms are two different beasts entirely, but both promote discussions and debate between multiple parties from around the world. The Internet forum is not so different from the historical Roman Forum, an ancient meeting place for the Roman people to discuss business transactions, observe trials, and listen to speeches. Just like the Roman Forum, a forum on the Internet is a meeting ground for various individuals to discuss a multitude of topics in a, sometimes, organized fashion. Although rules vary from forum to forum, most have similar guidelines so that their users are not heckled when they present an unpopular opinion, and discussions do not turn into all-out wars with insults as their main offense. On these forums
However, opening the door to international students to take college courses while living in their home countries bring some issues ranging from legitimacy of the education, some international students have issues with access to technology and issues with socializing with teachers and classmates. Colleges and universities like Harrisburg Area Community College, Pennsylvania State University and Shippensburg University have some challenges on how to ensure quality and easy accessibility to online courses, this has to be recognized as a substantial encounter and, as a consequence, become a chief emphasis in online and disseminated education

Interpersonal Communication in an Intercultural Setting Cultural growth in the twenty-first century has heightened the emphasis on interpersonal communication in an intercultural setting. As our world grows, expands and becomes increasingly more interconnected by various technological advances, the need for effective interpersonal communication among differing cultures has become quite clear. Due to the advancement of technology in today's world, a world in which some businesspeople are involved in transactions with other businesspeople in faraway countries, the call for knowledge of intercultural communication within this setting has become a reality. Interpersonal communication is a form of communication that involves a small number of people who can interact exclusively with one another and who therefore have the ability to both adapt their messages specifically for those others and to obtain immediate interpretations from them (Lustig et al, 1993). Although interpersonal communication is usually thought of as being perf!

Mediation is an extension of the negotiation process and shares some similarity with conciliation process.
Inside the majority of American households rest the unlimited territory of the internet. The unlimited and always advancing possibilities have unlocked powerful new tools in communication and socialization. Tools such as: long distance visual communication, international circulation of personal thoughts, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) have all led to a closer but more distant community of people. The positive side can attribute to the fact that the younger generation seems more in tune with their international counterparts. Youth have the ability to anonymously communicate with others through various message boards, mostly governed by one policy, freedom of speech. The anonymity of the internet has created a community where social outcasts mingle freely with others; a society where jocks can converse with geeks without fear of reprisal. This community releases people from the bounds of their own flesh. Yet, technological advances have pushed society into the next dimension of communication and socialization that seemingly override traditional and more personal vessels of communication.
As a teacher, parent or leader of a group, you’re expected to teach the group to be conventional and conform to society. It is basic human nature to have the desire to pass on our own values, norms and culture to our kids and/or those who we are in command of. We often resort to educating them based on values we’ve been taught by society. Social networking has now introduced an innovative way of attaining these norms through virtual communities on the Web.

Many benefits of online discussion have been recorded in the literature. For example, participation in an asynchronous online discussion is time and place independent (Morse, 2003: Williams etal., 2001). Participants who involved online discussion can contribute whenever they have a useful input and wherever they are as long as they have access to a network based computer. Williams (2002, p. 266) explained the freedom from temporal and geographical constraints international students have “flexibility in the time, place and pace of communication” with others. In contrast, the traditional face-to-face discussion does not have this flexibility.
