Evolution of my reading and writing
I started really reading at five years old. At first I wasn’t really too much of a reader. I only read when one of my teachers asked me to. I am going to start off by telling you about all of the teachers that really started to help me read. And also how they helped me learn to read for myself. I will try my best to give you the best and worst moments of my reading and writing career.
When I was in kindergarten, my teacher Miss Kint at the time said I was having trouble reading. I was normally a lot slower than the other kids. So when I went after school for her to help me read we quickly found out that I couldn’t pronounce words right. And some of that was because I started to develop a big overbite very early. And it stopped me from pronouncing words right. So after her putting me in speech lessons for three years I eventually was able to pronounce words fairly decent. I was always insecure and scared to read because I was embarrassed.
Another person who helped me become an even better reader was my third grade teacher. She was one of the sweetest teachers I had ever had. She would

always help me with my literature homework when I didn’t understand it. That was also the first year I had been assigned a book report. The idea really confused me at the time for some reason. Probably because I still wasn’t too good at reading in general. But she helped me pick out a book that was very easy to understand. And that book was Green eggs and ham. I was still stuck on kindergarten books while everyone else was reading middle school level books. But that year I had gotten more efficient at my reading speed. And I eventually caught up to my classmates. But along with good English teachers there can also be bad ones. And when I finally got to middle school, I was so excited. I thought this was going to be one of my better years. I was feeling confident. But then I met my fifth grade teacher. she was one of the worst teachers I had ever had. When I asked her for help she had a terrible way of explaining things. And when I told her I was still having trouble she scolded me for not paying attention. And all that year I struggled with the assignments because I knew she would get mad if I didn’t understand any of it. I really didn’t make any headway in terms of my reading skill. But honestly the one main teacher who gave me the most help was my tenth grade teacher she was one of the only teachers who actually reached out to me. And had the best way of explaining things so I could understand them. And she helped me achieve the best results i’ve had so far. We took the STAR reading test three times last year. And starting out I was only at a freshman reading level. But after the second time I noticed I went up to a sophomore reading level. Which made me feel like i’m finally starting to get good at reading. And after the third time I was finally ahead of my standards I had achieved a junior reading level. And sure, there are kids at college reading levels. But for me that was a really nice accomplishment. I honestly feel she had one of the best teaching methods I had ever seen. Those are the most dynamic people in my reading and writing career so far. Whether they were really good or really bad. They helped me one way or another. I am truly grateful to those teachers that have helped me along the way to where I am now. I will now be talking about the books and novel series that have helped me get as good as I am today. I will be covering my favorite and least favorite novels. And how each novel i’ve read has personally affected my life. I remember back in fourth grade; my social studies teacher, my fourth grade teacher read us a story at the end of the day named The city of ember. That story was one of the most action packed stories I had ever heard or read. He really had a way to get you sucked into the story. He knew how to portray characters voices to really make it sound real. I had always hated reading until my fourth grade teacher read that story. That really opened my mind to how stories can change your emotions so quickly. While he wasn’t an english teacher he was a really fun and nice teacher to have around. One of my overall favorite teachers as well. Arguably my favorite so far. Another one of my favorite Novels series of all time is definitely Harry Potter.
I started watching harry potter when I was about eight. Of course, there were only about three movies out. But I was so fascinated by the series because I absolutely loved magic and the action packed fight scenes. It wasn’t until I was in fifth grade until I started to read the series. My entire family loves the harry potter series. But I am the only one who likes to actually read the books. But they helped me through the time when my uncle passed away. I turned to those books to cheer me up. Because even if I saw the movies the books were so good I couldn’t help but love them. And of course the movies kept coming out and so did the books. So far I have read the Sorcerer's stone all the way to the order of the phoenix. Haven’t read any of the super new
ones. When I had got to the eighth grade I had really gotten into the older stuff. And I had really gotten to love the Goosebumps series. All of those episodes gave me nightmares. But strangely, I couldn’t resist reading the books. The scariest Goosebumps episode I had ever seen was named “Night of the living dummy” In that episode a ventriloquist dummy comes to life and it is the creepiest looking thing ever. However, I also saw Chucky when I was five and I was scarred from that for the longest time. So I still don’t really like dolls of any kind. And people used to make fun of me for that. But it doesn’t really bother me anymore. And another one of my favorite books is called “All Star” It is basically about a retired NBA player who’s son loves the game of basketball, but he’s not very good at it. And his dad basically helps him create a ragtag team of his friends to get better. And they basically turn themselves into a dream team with his dad’s help. I really like this story because my dream is to play in the NBA. And I really like basketball stories, Whether it be autobiographies about comeback stories. Or fictional comedic sports books, I love sports in general basically. But those are just some of the books that have stuck out to me. And they are the books that have helped me become a more fluent reader in general. They are all really great books to read and they are really good for kids who like action or suspense or both of course. I also met some of my good friends by reading these books with them through the years. My feelings have changed greatly towards reading and writing. I used to absolutely despise reading and writing. But through the help of some good teachers. And teaching methods I have come to truly appreciate the value it has in your life. And how much you truly need it for everyday tasks. It is because of those teachers I have been able to turn into a pretty good reader and writer. All around I really like to read and write But not twenty four seven of course. One thing I am still confused with in terms of writing is punctuation and grammar. I just need to work on what to use in terms of punctuation. And when to use it when i’m writing. Honestly I only know how to truly use the period and the comma. And the parenthesis I guess, but I don’t really use that in my writing anyway. I would also like to work on my tone when I read. I normally sound like a robot when I read. I would like to sound free flowing when i’m reading. My strengths as far as i’m concerned is my reading speed. I also have a pretty good memory. When I read I normally am pretty good at remembering crucial parts. Although at the beginning of the year. I’m not really warmed up so it takes a while for me to really buckle down. In terms of weaknesses, I am really not good at reading aloud like I said a while back. I sometimes get nervous and trip over my words. I don’t really know why, it just happens. And I am not really good at writing in terms of handwriting. It sometimes gets hard to read, But that is just a small weakness. And I also like I said earlier, Have a lot of trouble with punctuation, such as semicolon for example, I don’t know when that goes into a sentence or I don’t remember from last year. But that’s all that really comes to mind. That’s how I came to be the writer I am currently. Basically it comes down to the teachers you have and how well you get along with them. Also it is great to start reading novels from a pretty early age. To get a really good start on your reading skill. Of course it’s better to start small and work your way up to bigger novels. Overall I would say i’m a pretty good reader right now. But certainly no better than anyone else. I look forward to a great year, I hope to learn even more than any year before. I can not wait to get this year, hopefully we can get along.
“One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.” These were the words from one of the greatest authors of all time, Dr. Seuss, that sprouted the enjoyment of reading. I was a young lad when I first started looking at words, and although I could not understand them, I knew they had some significant meaning to them. Reading played a huge role in my life, and it all started when my mom read books to me as a baby, when I first read a book for myself, and, of course, when I was required to read at school.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
School was an overwhelming place for me as a child. The teacher told my mother many times that I was great at socializing, although, I took too much time cleaning my desk and thus never finish the assignments. The teacher would send me home with simple books to practice reading to my mom. I would bring them home to read to my mom, but my mom never wanted to listen to me read and so I never practiced reading. She later told me that she felt they were “stupid.” To this day, I wonder if she knew the effect she had on my reading development.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
I would only read books that were required for class, and even then I usually would not finish them. Reading was never something that I liked. When I got into high school, I started reading books for fun a little more than before. I was always a Harry Potter fan but since I did not like to read I only watched the movies. I remember reading those books and actually liking them. My junior year was also a time in my reading history that I remember well. As a class we were reading the Great Gatsby in time to see the movie for the midnight premier. Each day we were instructed to read up to a certain page, no further. I did not like the book at first, just like any other book I was forced to read for school. But, one night I was reading and the book got so interesting for me I could not put it down. That was the first book in along time that I enjoyed reading that was assigned to me. After my junior year, I went right back to my old ways of not reading books. My senior year I took AP English, so this required a lot of books. Thinking back to that year of school I remember finishing maybe one or two of those books. Although, I didn’t read all of those books, I still got a good grade in the class. One thing I did learn from that class about not reading all the books was reading the summaries is not good enough because, they leave out all the
Writing an essay often seems to be an overwhelming task for many individuals. For students like myself, who came from another country, writing can be more difficult and challenging. It can be very frustrating to fully comprehend an idea, and being unable to express it proficiently in English can be excruciating. For these reasons, assistance is often needed to become an effective writer. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate the process on how I organized and accomplished my most recent essay, and to identify the struggles I encountered when writing the paper. In addition, plans on how to improve my next paper, based on the teacher’s feedback from my previous essay, and topics including methods on how instructors can help develop my essay
I went into my educational experience with a wealth of background knowledge about a wide range of topics related to academics, relationships, athletics, and religion. I grew up in a small South Carolina town on a block where there were 48 children who played between the backyards and the park across the street. During the summer, we did not come inside until the street lights came on, and we played kickball, basketball, and baseball regularly. We also spent hours exploring a creek a few blocks away, catching tadpoles or frogs and, if we were really lucky, even snakes. Many of the mothers did not work outside the home and included us as they cooked meals or baked. I was in the first class in our school system to go through completely integrated schools from kindergarten through graduation and witnessed the joy and difficulties associated with changing attitudes concerning “separate but equal.” Most of the families on our block were Lebanese Catholic, and even though we were not, we learned about religion from them as we walked with to and from the church almost weekly for their religious education classes. Both sets of grandparents lived on the block next to us. We often ate dinners there where we were taught formal table manners, table settings, and basic etiquette. My mother worked part time at an historic
Have you ever done something and felt so confident about it and thought that you would do well but it turns out that, but it ends up that the result you would get is not what you got? I did I actually had to go through the whole process of getting better, I learned to grow gradually as a writer. When I first started writing wrote I earned As and Bs. Then I started the started the summer bridge program here at Washington Adventist University and found out that writing in High School is a lot different from college. It is even harder to write an essay because you have to be sure to add in enough details based on the topic and right when you think you are done you must check on grammarly to revise your essay and make sure you check your work. Or even the writing center but because it was a summer program so the writing center was not open at the moment. When I received my papers I learned how not
this area but I’m going to improve on it. The process of using multiple drafts has
Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
As a child, watching films taught me many lessons about the world I know today. One prominent storyline that I grew up with was the Harry Potter series. I loved to read when I was younger and I would devour myself into the books and would watch the films after I had finished reading the actual book. Harry Potter brought me into this fantasyland with wizard and witches but also had extreme similarities to the world we have today.
Reading was never something I fussed about growing up. As a child, I loved genres of realistic fiction. I was hooked on The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley, Goosebumps, The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes, Judy Moody, and especially, Zoobooks and Highlights magazines. My mother was always ready to help build my reading and writing skills. She took me to the library constantly to feed my passion for books and knowledge. I loved exploring the shelfs, organizing the books, and filling up my library cart. I tried keeping a diary in elementary school to keep track of my outings with my parents and grandparents to museums, zoos, movies, and libraries. This flash of writing enthusiasm was spun from books I read in the 4th and 5th grade that were
My parents instilled a passion for reading in me even as a toddler; years later, an excellent,
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
I remember the day I saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in theaters for the first time, I was only 5 years old and it was my first Harry Potter movie. I left the theater trying to do magic just like I saw the wizards do. Since then, I’ve grown up watching and reading Harry Potter. It was the first fictional world that I truly adored and still hold very dear today. Whenever I’m feeling down, I can put on one of the movies and feel like I’m in the wizarding world for a few hours. Harry Potter has changed my life and the way I view the world. Much of my creativity is drawn from the franchise and I have learned numerous life lessons along the way of the series. The series undoubtedly shaped my childhood and gave me a great deal of joy and a different perspective on the world.
