When taking the context of my placement preschool, the children should be learning a range of positive dispositions, expressing feelings, gaining knowledge and refining skills. Within the next three months, the children will be supported by the educators, peers and environment to make progress to achieve the learning outcome:
- In challenging times, use communication skills (verbal language or non-verbal cues) to express difficulties or unpleasant feelings that is considerate and polite towards others.
The rationale of this learning outcome is that children are at the age where they are using their words to express their feelings but are not in a polite manner. As most children can make sentences and use verbal language to communicate

Based on my pedagogical principles, I would implement a program that focuses on children’s social and emotional learning and teaching the children the idea of empathy and mindfulness to support children to work towards the learning outcome. A program that focuses on children’s feelings and communication skills can be done through activities such as reading books to the children individually or during group times (Kids Matter n.d., p. 3). Resources I would include are books such as How to be a friend and Mouse was Mad would be useful to read to children and teach them how to be kind and caring towards others and teaches children that it is okay to express feelings, but it is the way that it is expressed that matters. By introducing the books to the children, they are learning new vocabulary that is polite and use them when describing their feelings and understanding that it is okay to talk about their feelings (Katz 1990, p. 23). Social and emotional learning in the centre is important as it teaches children self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making (Kids Matter n.d., p.
Working with children from Year 5 to Year 12 in an aquatic setting. I am responsible for supervising and educating these children, whilst being actively engaged in the planning process. The service we provide caters for a number of diverse children as we regularly engage with students with physical and intellectual disabilities. Subsequently, our service incorporates inclusive planning in order to accommodate the needs of all students. As an extension of the planning process we also regularly engage in risk management

The Child Development Center of College of San Mateo provides early care and educational programs for children between the ages of 3 to 5 years old. Children are divided into classrooms with a “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two or three “associate” teachers. Klara attended Classroom, “A,” a stimulating and well-resourced classroom. Klara was observed for two hours on Monday from 9 am to 11 am and for two hours on Wednesday from 9 am to 11 am. During these two hours, classroom activities consisted of “free time,” “story time,” and an outside “play time.” A “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two “associate” teachers were present during observations. Additionally, a total of eighteen children were in attendance during the observed days.
Morality, which is one’s general standards about right and wrong behavior, also includes prosocial behavior and other traits such as honesty, fairness, and concern about other people’s rights and welfare (Omrod, 2014). Both morality and prosocial behavior involve multiple parts of the brain, emotions and complex reasoning abilities. Some age-typical characteristics for preschool aged children include, some understanding that behaviors causing physical or psychological harm are morally wrong, a sense of guilt and shame about misbehaviors that cause harm to others, also display empathy and sympathy, and children at this age also show an appreciation for the need to be fair.
This portfolio will be focusing on the holistic development of a child. It will include: three observations (using various methods) and an in depth evaluation of each observation, which will assess the child’s current development and their individual next steps.
Previously in Ireland the education side of child care was majorly under rated which meant more emphasis was placed on the care of children rather than promoting the potential of the developing child. Before the 1990’s children were cared for by mothers, other family members or neighbours and other child care settings were largely run by voluntary organisations such as Irish Preschool Playgroup Association, family support groups such as Barnardos. These services were created due to demand that was not previously needed, but they were unregulated. The Child Care Act 1991 was the first regulation brought into practice in childcare settings.
It discusses how children are born with that needs to connect with individuals around them. Teachers and providers create positive relationship with children from birth through the early years. The foundation for that healthy social and emotional development because it affects her children see the world, express themselves, manages their emotions, in establishing a positive relationship with others. There were several areas of development that included social interactions that focus on the relationship that we share and include relationship with adults and peers. Emotional awareness recognized and understands your feelings and actions of other people, and self-regulation where you have that ability to express your thoughts, feelings, and behavior in a socially appropriate way. There were many tips that were listed when working with infants from talking and reading, having that warm, responsive, and consistent care, maintaining predictable routines, and getting to know each child while following their lead. The importance of supporting children and developing social skills is critical for learning, happiness, and long-term. This development begins during infancy and can be supported through simple social games, emotional role model, and imitating an infant's facial expression and sounds. The importance of social-emotional development and toddlers makes an impact in a child life when these skills are developed starting in infancy. Encouraging positive behaviors and using positive discipline practices that helped to develop the ability to make good choices as well as recognizing the confidence that is built when these behaviors are repeated. This is a process for young children to learn these behaviors always remembering that a patient response will help especially when the behaviors are
Over the past eight weeks this class has not only fulfilled my major requirements, but also made me understand more about the complexity of child development and how I can become a better person as a future parent and educator. Since I am an Education major, the four topics that would benefit me in the future are Erikson’s stages, Induction, Educational Self Fulfilling Philosophy, and Adolescence. I plan to be successful with my career and use what I have learned in Child Development to prepare future’s leaders of tomorrow.
Social and emotional learning is defined by Zins, Bloodworth, Weissberg and Walberg (2004, p. 4) as ‘the process through which we learn to recognize and manage emotions, care about others, make good decisions, behave ethically and responsibly, develop positive relationships, and avoid negative behaviours.’ Schools need to reflect and help in the social and emotional development of children to meet the expectations within their community. By integrating thinking, feeling and behaving it is possible to achieve these important life tasks.
More specifically, if an individual uses the five C’s they would improve negative interactions. Also, the use of proper verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and listening skills will help overcome the negative interactions that sometimes come along when people communicate with each other. The five C’s of communication are complete, clear, concise, cohesive, and courteous (Tamparo & Lindh, 2008, pp. 13-14). The message that you convey must be complete, clear, concise, and cohesive. This helps the other person understand what was said. The other individual will open up and understand what was said if a therapeutic courteous approach was used. Appropriate words and tone of voice help an individual clear any confusion about the message. As for nonverbal communication, it is important to match facial expressions with verbal communication. Lastly, the ability to listen to the other person can be a therapeutic technique that shows you care and want to help them solve their
The purpose of the meeting was to share information to the parent(s) of JoJo about the child’s developmental progress, especially with what Jojo has accomplished throughout the whole year and his transition to the next level. For instance, Teacher Leah discussed about JoJo’s developmental progress in relation to his age in four broad areas: children are personally and socially competent, children are effective learners, children show physical and motor competence,
My son BOB BOB is currently experiencing his middle childhood. He is smart, funny, competitive, full of energy, and independent. I have observed him trying out new things, He has become Mr. Social with peers and he appears to value their relationships. My wife recently got him a cell phone and his texts message his friends constantly, which speak to his enhanced fine motor skills. He also appears to take seriously his academic studies. He has participated in science exhibits and spelling contest. He is on his middle school basketball team, as well. All my sons at this time played sports as I have always felt this was a crucial time for develop of self-esteem and social graces. Sigmund Freud called this period the Latency stage and he suggested this period is when a child develops social interest and acquires intellectual skills (Broderick, & Blewitt, 2010). Erik Erikson in his theory considered this the industry vs. inferiority stage, he formularized that this is where a child acquires intellect or develops a sense of inferiority or failure if they are not accepted among peers (Sharf, 2008). Furthermore, Piaget claims that this period is when a child begins to reason, which he classified as the concrete operational stage (Broderick, & Blewitt). He also suggests that children start to think in the abstract. Likewise, he claims, child start to increase their memory capacity and start to think about thinking, their language skills improve, as well as their ability to process information more quickly. In addition, they improve their problem solving skills. Additionally, research claims that interactions with adults, verbalization of numbers and comprehension of shapes afford a child a ...
1.) The shows I chose to watch are shows that children usually don't grow out of or are attracted to at a younger and older age.
I watched Mrs. Ollie two-year old classroom. These children ranged from two to two-years and five months to give you a little information Mrs. Ollie. Mrs. Ollie has been teaching children for over twenty-years and based on my observations in Mrs. Ollie two year-old classroom. When observing these two-year olds it seemed to me they were expressing that this is the world and we are just guest.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
