The purpose of this final reflections paper is to summarize my knowledge before and after starting the Global leader & Supervision coursework. This paper also reflects on what I plan to do in the future with the skills that I have learned and strategies to sustain the acquired knowledge in the future. Before starting the coursework, I had a practical knowledge as a team leader for the group of 20 members, but this is my first experience in learning leadership principles. Now, I am able to effectively communicate with people around me in a professional manner. In my opinion, clear communication skills are important for a business leader’s success. I will be working to further enhance my communication skills in order to present myself as a good communicator in my future endeavors. In addition, case study reviews enabled me to adopt various leadership principles of creative business leaders. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
The event I will be pulling from is from an era where I believe everyone tries to find themselves before experiencing college: high school. In high school, I was a part of the student council/government organization as the student body president. With that title came responsibilities created not only by myself, but also from my sponsors and the faculty. Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. I learned several life lessons in addition to the technical subject associated with the industry. This paper demonstrates the leadership styles exhibited by my manager with suitable examples.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life.
