Dashing Through English 111 Transitioning from a high school student into a college student was immensely stressful. In college you have way more freedom, but an enormous amount of responsibility. In high school you meet every day, so you know exactly what is due and what to you are supposed to do. In college you meet every other day for an hour. You have more outside of class work, and it is your responsibility to get your work done. Throughout my first semester I learned a tremendous amount of information about myself and how well I work in stressful situations. My class participation and attendance improved greatly from high school. I learned many processes in my English class that I will use throughout my life. From learning the MEAL Plan, to correctly constructing a thesis statement, I had a great first semester. In my first college English class, my overall attendance, class participation, and being prepared for class was better than I expected. In high school, I could miss as many days as I wanted too with no problem catching up with late Throughout the semester we worked on a lot of skills; essay writing, per reviews, conducting research, writing with research, following the MEAL Plan, and work with spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Yet, where I showed the most growth were essay writing and following the MEAL Plan. The purpose of the MEAL Plan is to help authors organize their writings and make their paragraphs flow more easily. We did man exercise in and out of class involving the MEAL Plan, including the rhetorical analysis essay from St. Louis Community College, the rhetorical analysis essay of “Should Everyone Go to College”, the rhetorical analysis essay of the “American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?”, and an argumentative essay from a self-chosen topic.
