Reflection Essay on Bobos
The term Bobos actually refers to Bohemia and Bourgeois. These are two different social classes that have mingled to form the Bobos - a class that bears completely different characteristics from the two distinct classes. In this paper, I will discuss these two demographic groups with regard to psychographic market segmentation. At the end of this paper, I will give my opinion on the best advertising tips that can be used to target the Bobo market.
During our discussion in class, I learnt a lot with regard to the Bobos. To begin with, I came to realize that Bobos bears a balance of characteristics of the Bohemian and the Bourgeois. While Bohemia is naturally creative and emotional, Bourgeois are the serious individuals tailor-made for the corporate world. The Bobos thrive in the information age and thus have a taste for a luxurious life. They are people who live large and spend on expensive goods. For instance, Brooks says that these are people who have renovated kitchens with the size of aircraft hangers in their houses. This group is made up of the well-educated and wealthy individuals in the society. Due to their education, this group of people has good jobs and makes lots of money and hence lives a life of consumerism.
Although the Bohemians traditionally showed rebellion and lived free lives, when they get education, their rebellious attitudes are tamed and eventually, they make up their minds to live independent yet responsible lives. ...should focus on this (Communication and Consumer Behavior 17). If targeting the Bobo market, advertisers should be keen to mention quality and price. The consumers will be attracted to a quality product and will not mind the cost. Conversely, a cheap product might be a turn off. In my opinion, quality and price are not the only factors when making an advertisement targeting the elite group; uniqueness is a crucial factor too. The Bobos want to stand out and want to conform at the same time. They want to rebel yet uphold some values. A prudent advertiser would be keen to highlight the quality, cost and uniqueness of a product or service if they want to capture the Bobos’ attention.

In the essay The Chosen People, Stewart Ewen, discusses his perspective of middle class America. Specifically, he explores the idea that the middle class is suffering from an identity crisis. According to Ewen’s theory, “the notion of personal distinction [in America] is leading to an identity crisis” of the non-upper class. (185) The source of this identity crisis is mass consumerism. As a result of the Industrial Revolution and mass production, products became cheaper and therefore more available to the non-elite classes. “Mass production was investing individuals with tools of identity, marks of personhood.” (Ewen 187) Through advertising, junk mail and style industries, the middle class is always striving for “a stylistic affinity to wealth,” finding “delight in the unreal,” and obsessed with “cheap luxury items.” (Ewen 185-6) In other words, instead of defining themselves based on who they are on the inside, the people of middle class America define themselves in terms of external image and material possessions.

Have you ever seen an advertisement for a product and could immediately relate to the subject or the product in that advertisement? Companies that sell products are always trying to find new and interesting ways to get buyers and get people’s attention. It has become a part of our society today to always have products being shown to them. As claimed in Elizabeth Thoman’s essay Rise of the Image Culture: Re-Imagining the American Dream, “…advertising offered instructions on how to dress, how to behave, how to appear to others in order to gain approval and avoid rejection”. This statement is true because most of the time buyers are persuaded by ads for certain products.
Segmentation, targeting and positioning are the fundament of modern marketing (Proctor, 2002, p. 188, as cited in Harris and Schaefer, 2015).
In James B. Twichell’s article, “What We Are to Advertisers”, he argues about how each person has a certain identity and it is shown in “You Are What They Eat: The Influence of Reference” a study conducted by Jennifer Edson Escala and James R. Bettman. Twichell believes that the type of clothing people buy shapes their identity. He argues that what a person buys can help advertisers target a certain social group or class. According to Twichell, social groups like “high class businessmen” relate with how an identity forms through buying certain brands of clothing. In “You are What They Eat”, Escala and Bettan states that identity forms through how brand name clothing makes a person feel and see themselves.
Advertising generally tries to sell the things that consumers want even if they should not wish for them. Adverting things that consumers do not yearn for is not effective use of the advertiser’s money. A majority of what advertisers sell consists of customer items like food, clothing, cars and services-- things that people desire to have. On the other hand it is believed by some advertising experts that the greatest influence in advertising happens in choosing a brand at the point of sale.
The economy is booming with success, and your wealth portrays ones position in society. George Babbitt is infatuated with having the latest “gadgets” and technology in his home, as is the rest of Middle-class America. Lewis portrays society as a group of self-centered people who must have the best of everything (sounds similar to our world today). Middle-class America is disturbingly the same to the last detail in the 1920’s. Life begins for Babbitt waking up to an unappreciative family, and a typical fake show of affection from his wife. Babbitt realizes his life is dull and mundane. Even the kiss from his wife is typical. Babbitt, like most men in the 1920’s, finds his home not as a haven but as a depressing reality of what his life has really become. Babbitt recognizes he is disgusted with his life, and that he doesn’t even love his wife. Only when Babbitt escapes his home does he find satisfaction. Babbitt is found in his community as a role model of every businessmen, even the mechanic at the gas station commends him for organization. Babbitt temporarily feels relief when freedom encompasses his life, but later in the novel Babbitt illustrates that even “business” is shaped by society. Just as business is shaped in Zenith, so are the women who live there.

Many Bohemian’s are associated with poverty, and very independent. Charles Lamb made a famous remark on bohemianism, it stated, “a man can never have too much time, not too little to do. That was a temperamental, a delightfully Bohemian remark” (p. 211). Our bohemian culture and society are full of eager individuals who live a much faster pace of living. Even though in many aspects our Bohemian lifestyle differs from those of laborers, suffragist, villagers, middle class, and the upper class we still have one thing in common. Advertising is an information source to inform people about the products and prices of the company, which can help them to make informed choices. More recently, a huge amount of money has been spent on advertising throughout the world. Different types of advertisement such as television, radio, magazine, newspaper, the internet, billboards and posters can influence consumer’s behavior positively or negatively as there are different arguments and opinions. This essay will focus on the purpose of the advertisement for the company, the positive and negative effects of the advertisement on consumer behavior. According to Shimp (2007), there are five important factors which determine the purpose of an advertisement in terms of marketers’ communication with consumers.
From the billboards on the streets to the flyers in the doors of public restrooms, advertisings occupy our life. Indeed, we all feel annoying when the commercials suddenly interrupt our enjoyable time of watching TV; however how do you make the decision to buy a Toyota or a Honda without watching the commercials of neither of these? Thus, advertising provides us the options of consumption. My other question would be: Can you actually distinguish the difference between a Starbucks coffee and a coffee from an unknown cafe each time when you are lining in the Starbucks? I believe the only clue for us would be the coffee of Starbucks has a green, long-haired female Greek mythological figure in the cup, and the coffee from the unknown cafe has nothing. Therefore, we are influenced by advertisings and the promotions of brands. In the class, we have been introduced the concepts of how the advertising influences the consumers‘ choices and how the brand image plays an important role in consumer behavior. We could notice that the crucial part which could determine the success of one product was whether the consumers had the ability to recognize the brand image. Thus, in the competitive market, advertising could stimulate the promotion of brands and make the product to be standout for the consumer. In my research project, I would like to trace the topic about the effects of advertising and branding on the consumption.
Bohemianism could be summed up as “the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic or literary pursuits” (“Bohemianism”). The common factor among all bohemians was a strong opposition to the principles put forth by the French middle class, or bourgeois. Bohemian ideals included minimal property ownership, a lack of moral codes, and refusal to participate in the competition for wealth and status. Living through these ideals, bohemians lived in and moved between various public areas and communal living spaces, never staying put or attempting to settle down. This constant relocation allowed very few tangibles to be kept, displaying the disdain bohemians held for material items. The absence of ethics was also obvious; staples of the bohemian lifestyle included frequent alcohol consumption and drug usage, as well as sexual permissiveness. Further, without involvement in the constant race for wealth and power, bohemians had plenty of time for work in the arts, where the end goal was simply to improve the quality of the art.
