Prejudice and discrimination exist as persistent manifestations of derisory power. Communities across the country are regularly deflated by untenable biases ripping at the seams of an individual’s psychological and social existence. These tendencies and biases effect on college campuses worldwide. The last century is warped with academic institution’s transformation from white exclusivity to an opportunity welcome to people from all gender, racial, disability backgrounds. From the outside looking in, it could seem that higher education stands isolated from the animosity and harms of larger society. Potter Center’s Lambda Association - Vanderbilt’s undergraduate gender-sexuality alliance. I participated in the organizations chapter meetings, film screening and discussion of “Bi The Way”, attended the Divinity School’s Gables Coming Out Series, and volunteered at the annual drag show. All of these experiences uncovered a part of the LGBTQI community that I had not previously been exposed to or considered. Before this semester I had not given much thought to sexuality, I presumed that those that were bi-sexual, queer, questioning, or transgendered were not different from myself. To begin, individuals introduced themselves and shared what their pronouns are (what they prefer to be referred to by- he, him, his, she, her, hers, or they, them, theirs). This immediately set an accepting, open tone for the meeting, and proved to be common practice for every meeting thereafter. Pronouns we were told ensure that you are identifying yourself as you choose instead of being labeled as something you are not comfortable with. This concept of identity was reinforced by the discussion of microaggressions in my first meeting. Throughout our discussion we shared examples and personal testimonies of microaggresions people had faced. I was shocked by how commonplace actions and words, whether intentional or unintentional, communicate hostile or derogatory slights and insults towards an identity. As people shared their stories in this meeting and the more time I spent with LGBTQI individuals I found my perspective shifting. I was not aware of biases that I had previously held but as I spent more time at the K.C. Potter Center I was able to recognize myself being proven wrong. “College campuses are not dominated by widespread racial/ethnic segregation and the racial/ethnic clustering that does occur isn’t impeding intergroup contact.” (578, Hoeffner and Hoeffner). Throughout the essay, the writer continues to provide facts and sources on the information that diversity is not a problem on college campuses. She quotes evidence that states that college students are getting a “variety of positive educational outcomes that result from being educated in a diverse environment.” (578, Hoeffner and Hoeffner).
When the word “prejudice” is mentioned in public conversation, undertones of anger and unfairness usually accompany it. Prejudice is often defined as a predetermined opinion not based on fact,experience, or knowledge. Many acts of inequalities and discriminative wrong-doings in history can be traced back to being a result of prejudice.So what place does a concept with such a negative connotation have in an institution of higher education where students and faculty of varying cultures and backgrounds come together to learn? Instinctively, a good number of people would answer that prejudice and its negative consequences have no place in such an environment. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva and Sue both demonstrate from their research that Whites do not comprehend the impact of their unconscious biases. These biases towards students of colour in a white-based post-secondary school environment can result in stress and weak interracial relationships. This is an issue since the significance of these everyday actions is not fully recognized and acknowledged. I will elaborate on a variety of examples, specifically the influence of the peers, and faculty.
In recent years, a rise in verbal abuse and violence directed at people of color, lesbians, and gay men, and other historically persecuted groups has plagued the United States. Among the settings of these expressions of intolerance are college and university campuses, where bias incidents have occurred sporadically since the mid-1980's. Outrage, indignation and demands for change are the responses to these incidents - understandably, given the lack of racial and social diversity among students, faculty and administrators on most campuses. Many universities, under pressure to respond to the concerns of those who are the objects of hate, have adopted codes or olicies prhibiting speech that offends any group based on race gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation. That's the wrong response, well-meaning or not. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects speech no matter how offensive its content.

NC State published a flyer of events scheduled for Gay History Month. Event consisted of workshops for students and faculty, a network luncheon, celebrate National Coming Out Day, and a free screening of the documentary Al Nisa: Black Muslim Women in Atlanta’s Gay Mecca, followed by a discussion with the film’s director. Not every event was open to the public, most where specifically for faculty and students of NC State. I selected to attend the Forgotten Queer History Lecture, conducted in the Talley Student Union, on October 6, 2015.
Although my journey to the University of California, Los Angeles has required many hours of arduous work, it is irresponsible to neglect the fact that my skin color has given me an advantage on my journey towards higher education. My whiteness has, in some ways, allowed me to attend a private college-preparatory school, pay for testing such as the ACT and SAT, apply to colleges, and eventually pay college tuition. Although the dedication my parents have put into creating financial stability for my family is clear, recognizing the lack of obstacles and discrimination they dealt with, as opposed to the daily oppression of many minority groups, is necessary. Lipsitz argues that “Whiteness is everywhere in American culture, but it is very hard to see… ‘white power secures its dominance by seeming not to be anything in particular.’ As the unmarked category against which difference is constructed, whiteness never has to speak its name, never has to acknowledge its role as an organizing principle in social and cultural relations” (Lipsitz 369). Although subtle, my journey to UCLA, and specifically my high school experience, was influenced by whiteness and white privilege. I do believe that most people have a tendency to let their preconception of others get in the way of and effect their decisions. People tend to make many decisions based on their own bias beliefs about other people. Prejudice can be called by many things such as bias, racism, sexism, discrimination, and many other different things.
Gays in today’s society face many problems not only with the Media’s eyes, but also on college campuses. Young adults who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual experience major stresses in managing their sexual orientation.
When diversity is being discussed, there are a plethora of ideas that are associated with it. Whether people are talking being put on a waitlist for college, about people of color, or about representation in the media, the subject of diversity is not rare. Recently, the conversation of diversity has become more common because colleges want to demonstrate that they have diversified campus. How would diversity on campus be defined? Most importantly, diversity is more than having an extraordinary personality. Race, gender, sexuality, and social status are a few of the superfluous traits that make an individual unique in a college’s eyes. In Sophia Kerby’s article, “10 Reasons Why We Need Diversity on College Campuses”, she notes that, while there has already been an effort to diversify high schools and middle schools, accepting students of different backgrounds is not as apparent in higher education (1) . Racism and prejudice has been present in almost every civilization and society throughout history. Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades, both socially and technologically, racism, hatred and prejudice still exists today, deeply embedded in old-fashioned, narrow-minded traditions and values.
Unfortunately due to our past history, discrimination had been among us from since decades. Discrimination and prejudice would probably be among us until the end of the world. Prejudice and discrimination is an action that treats people unfairly because of their membership in a particular social group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs to rather on that individual. It is an unfair treatment to a person, racial group, and minority. It is an action based on prejudice.
Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else. An example of discrimination based on prejudice involves the Jews. “Biased sentiments and negative stereotypes of Jews have been a part of Western tradition for centuries and, in fact, have been stronger and more vicious in Europe than in the United States. For nearly two millennia, European Jews have been chastised and persecuted as the “killers of Christ” and stereotyped as materialistic moneylenders and crafty business owners (Healey, p.65). The prejudice against these groups led to the discrimination against them.

Ignorance is a huge problem, it is one of the biggest factors responsible for issues such as racism and sexism. Luckily, ignorance, generally speaking, is a relatively easy issue to fix. The obvious answer here would be more education, but this is not necessarily the case. In order to eliminate much of the racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice that arise due to ignorance, it is necessary to look at education from another perspective: one that encourages togetherness and development alongside people of all races and genders. One quote by Grace Boggs book The Next American Revolution summarizes the issue perfectly. “Just imagine what our neighborhoods would be like if, instead of keeping our children isolated in classrooms for twelve years and more, we engaged them in community-building activities with the same audacity with which the civil rights movement engaged them in desegregation activities fifty years ago! ...Our children will be absorbing naturally and normally the values of social responsibility and cooperation at the same time that they are being inspired to learn the skills and acquire the information necessary to solve real problems” (Boggs 158). So, the main point here is that prejudice, against all sexes, genders, and creeds, can be eliminated via education that encourages cooperation with the largest variety of people. In order to understand this concept, it is necessary to look at it from a few different perspectives to analyze its viability in modern society.
