Reflection On Improvisation In Dance

Writing Reflection What is improvisation? I understand this concept as creation without pre planning. To create something completely new and never seen before, just to respond to how you are feeling in the moment. I see improvisation, as a series of spontaneous movements that can just come trough your mind and body, in the moment something inspired you. I want to talk about this specific skill that we practice in class, because it makes me see dance with a very different perspective, and a wider view. It makes me reflect in how important is improvisation, how every specific dance step was in the past an improvisation step, invented by someone and that now is considered as “ordinary” or “aesthetic”. Maybe this depends on what you practice, or what your are used to. I have practiced cheerleading since I have 8 years, more than 10 years on this amazing sport, where practice, precision and constant are the key elements to succeed. In this sport a simple mistake, because of lack of practice can take you to the hospital and even to death. Cheerleading has not chance for improvisation, every movement in the routine, has to have a lot of dedication before being in a stage and present it. Practice make perfection, and cheerleading is what is trying to achieve. Always being better, and do it always once more time even when it’s already perfect, for then make a new thing. I think this is a very big aspect of why I don't like improvisation, because I really appreciate all the hard work and time of dedication that cheerleadings do in their trainings. I know they are very different skills, and that cheerleading is a sport and improvisation art, and that maybe they can’t being compared in that way, but it doesn't seems fair to me, to just appear in a stage and do whatever you like and call it art where no preparation or training is required. Because if we think it, nothing new ever happens if you keep doing the same thing as everyone else. I strongly believe that without creativity a piece of work becomes completely useless and that each idea must have an aspect of creativity otherwise it is completely unimportant. It really impact me, it’s like a little summary of how I understand improvisation.
