In this analytical reflection, I will be analysing the practical performance with an emphasis placed on the compositional process. I will also reflect upon any criticisms received, reflecting on how the critical response process helped shape my groups performance. Throughout the development of our piece, it became focused on reliance and how we rely on a variety of objects and people to get through life. This made us research into how we can show reliance with our bodies. I looked at the choreographer Steve Paxton, and began to experiment with contact improvisation. I did this to show the physicality of reliance through movement as opposed to simply showing it through props, hence the medication. I also studied my own reasoning behind why I dance (See appendix 5) and began to craft ideas of what I wanted to perform through scoring. Scoring is a really effective as a compositional process and it really helped me to focus on what I wanted to show and the spacing of each performer on the stage. Initially I began working on a score to describe how I wanted my movements to segue into one another (See appendix 6) before moving on to visual recordings of my choreography to share with the group (see appendix 7). The musical creativity of my second song I feel worked well through my leap and expressionism, the song choice came from one of my favourite artists, Darren Criss. Not for his singing but his songwriting is filled with so much emotion and I always feel connected to his work. It is incredibly relevant to the solo movement I am describing through my body as it is a language of destruction and reaching out for help. I had the pleasure of being in Western Kentucky University Dance Department’s concert, An Evening of Dance. The performance took place on April 29th through May 2nd in Russel Miller Theatre. It consisted of many works from faculty and guest artists. I felt like the concert was a success and that the choreography was all unique in its own way. I enjoyed the pieces that I performed, and the ones that my fellow company members were in. Through the analysis of “Petrichor”, I found that each production and chorographic element plays a large part in the successful outcome of a dance and emotional responses can be evoked by the simplest ideas.
Learning about Dance: Dance as an Art Form and Entertainment provides visions into the many features of dance and inspires scholars to keep an open mind and think critically about the stimulating, bold, ever-changing and active world of dance. Learning about Dance is particularly useful for those who do not have a wide and diverse dance contextual, such as students in a preliminary level or survey dance course. Dance is displayed through the human body, it has the control to communicate and induce reactions. Dance can be found in many different places, it enables the participants and seekers to touch and knowledge the joy of movement. Dance is discovered as being one of the oldest art forms worldwide. Dance existed in early cultures was recognized in a sequence of rock paintings portrayed dance. Since this discovery of rock paintings, several other forms of art have been found that depict dance. People used rituals in order to worship the gods and believed that the rituals held magical and spiritual powers. During the ancient period civilizations sentient decisions began to be made with regard to dance. Other periods that had an impact on dance were the medieval period, the renaissance period, and the contemporary period. As a society, we are constantly pairing things together in hopes of enhancing them: apple pie and ice cream, Indians and cowboys, and most relevant to this paper, music and dance. In an art form like ballet, it seems as though music and dance complement each other equally. Truly, it is hard to picture, or perform, a dance without music. However, this may not be the case for music, even if that music is composed specifically for a dance routine. The compilation of the music and the dancing from a scene in the American cowboy ballet Rodeo will be examined to ultimately help us understand the way in which they serve each other as a unit and their ability to function independently.
As stated before, we began by breaking apart the stages of life and assigning each individual solos depending on the individual’s preference. Then, due to our time constraints, we opted to create our solos on our own time and to work on the movements that all of us must do together, together. The primary strategy of creating our movements and choreography for the dance was to correspond our movements to the meaning behind the lyrics being sung and the stage of life currently occurring. For example, before my solo as the three of us are playing together as children, the lyrics being sung were, “Are you going to age with grace? Are you going to age without mistakes…?” Because the lyrics were talking about the mistakes and blundering made as one matures, I took begin my solo, angrily kicked down the Jenga tower to show my frustration at my own personal faults. On September 2nd, I experienced one of the most enjoyable folk dances, known as contra dance, at the First Baptist Church. I had my first dance recital on the day I turned four. Now I don’t remember anything from that day, but I believe that that day is when I learned I loved to perform. I’ve been taking dance lessons since then, and many things that I do now involve performing in some type of way.

The spirits of past performers possessed my body and, I could not hold back any longer. My voice cracked as I let out a blood-curtailing yell marking the beginning of my performance. My choreographed routine was trumped by the urge to freestyle! The spotlights cascaded on each twist and turn of my body, reflecting the multitude of colors in my headdress and regalia. Starting dance composition one was a step to the next level for me has a dancer and choreographer. Initially when I thought about choreography I was not sure about process of how to create a dance. I knew choreographing may be the role I play in the dance world because I recently discovered I did not want to dance professionally. During the time of taking this class I focused on trying to find myself again as a dancer. The questions I asked myself were who you are and what purpose do you desire to serve as dancer. The chorography required for this class was a way of forcing me to dig deep and figure out what type of movement vocabulary I enjoy. On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
