Over the course of these six weeks I been tested both emotionally, physically and mentally. The teaching profession is very difficult but rewarding. We will be tested in so many ways but the reward is amazing when we see students succeed and grow. I have been super blessed with my school placement over the summer. The school is very great supportive through their coaches and my cooperative teacher. Ms. Glosson my Cooperative teacher is a veteran teaching English in middle school. She has been supportive and always gives me advice. I love how we work together and I like to get her involved in the lesson. I also like to respect her space because it’s her classroom and her space. I love how attentive she is and how she is willing to stand up for us fellows because she knows that we 're going through a lot of pressure.

I like to incorporate the “Arts” within my classroom. One of the things that I 've been actually struggling with a lot is aligning my standards with my objectives and making sure that everything is completely aligned. I 'm having my students working on a song and that doesn 't really line well with the curriculum which is causing problems. Also my coach is not so enthusiastic about me incorporating the “Arts” within the classroom. He does not see the valve of the “Arts” in the classroom. Yet the reason why am doing this project is to have my students thinking about their future of hopes and dreams. I believe that we can incorporate all forms of “Arts” in multiple subject areas and it allows students use it to engage students. I want to encourage my students to realize that their dreams can happen. Many of my students want to be an audio engineer, FBI, architect, and an actor. I mean they are super amazing and super smart. Schools are beginning to adapt more to the variety of students needs in the classroom. Co-teaching is one of the methods schools and teachers are using to reach more students. It got originally noticed in 1960s but didn’t become popular and supported till 1990s (Villa). Co-teaching is when the general education teacher is working along side another professional. They could be a special education teacher, ESL teacher, a reading specialist, or any other professional that could assist in creating a coordinated curriculum for a diverse classroom. Both the general education teacher and the other professional will plan the coordinated curriculum and instructions that will be used in the general education classroom (Vaughn pg. 79).
Art is intended for all to enjoy and learn from. Through an art curriculum; phonics, mathematics, and readiness skills to name a few can be learned through an art curriculum. With this curriculum a teacher can adapt that centers to teach those with diverse abilities such as emotional and intellectual challenges, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and orthopedic impairments.
Collaboration in the world of education has become an increasingly popular method of addressing a variety of school issues, such as curriculum design, behavioral plans, professional development and management of resources. One of the areas in which collaboration is becoming more popular is co-teaching in special education, where special education teachers and general education teachers share the planning and instruction responsibilities for inclusion classrooms (Friend & Cook, 2010). As academic standards for the education of students with disabilities are held to the same standards as their typical peers due to the No Child Left Behind Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the co-teaching model has been increasingly implemented to meet those needs. Most research has shown co-teaching to be effective in the inclusion classroom, though there are a few studies which have refuted its significance and identified reasons for problems in implementing a successful co-teaching program.
There has definitely been a lot of stressors that have shaped me into a better professional and educator. I have overcame being displaced in a temporary room with little to know supplies for 3 months, being interim Head Teacher for 1.5 months while still performing all my Teacher Assistant duties, training and working with 2 new staff as well as personal issues going on as well. I have overcome everything. I believe now that I can tackle whatever life throws at me. This quarter, I believe that I became a better educator by increasing my abilities to individualize learning and development, being more focused on how children learn instead of what they learn, and learning techniques and practices I can put into effect next year as an educator. I definitely feel like a better educator after learning from this program. I have the ability to be patient when children are having negative behaviors. I have grown into a professional improvising in situations, and I definitely have a lot of knowledge about how children learn. The best part of my experience has been working with other professionals that I now call colleagues. I realize that networking with other agencies is the best way to accomplish goals for children. I have learned so much from working with people outside of Head Start and my other practicums. I have full confidence in my abilities to teach and educate children, as well as administrate. As a child, when someone asked me what I was going to be when I grew up my answer was always a teacher. For as long as I can remember I wanted to teach. When I was around 7 or 8 years old I would make my grandmother math worksheets and she would pretend to be my student. I knew as I grew older that yes, my dream job as a kid was exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I started looking into different fields of teaching. I was stuck between high school English or Anatomy/Biology. So I began my freshman year of college as a biology student and I did community service at a local daycare. For the lead teacher interview assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down with and interview my son’s EC teacher from last year, Mrs. Hamm. Since my son started at the school last year, Mrs. Hamm has helped him in so many different ways. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching for over 20 years from her home state of Pennsylvania and more currently at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC for the last 12 years and recently awarded “Teacher of the Year”. Mrs. Hamm, up until this school year, was the main EC teacher for all grades Kindergarten through fifth grade at Mount Energy Elementary School. As of the present school year, the school district made the determination that she was over the acceptable number of students. As a result, they decided to hire an additional EC teacher and assistant to teach grades 3-5th and Mrs. Hamm would teach grades K-2. Mrs. Hamm was the teacher of 18 students until this decision was made, now with grades K-2, she has 9 students in her class.
Jane Alexander, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), once said, “Many children are missing out on something which gives their education context, gives their lives depth and meaning, and prepares them to be the future workforce.” This “something” that she spoke of is music and art education. Unfortunately, she is entirely correct. We are currently seeing in our country a dramatic cut in arts education curriculum in our public schools due to the limited amount of both time and funding. In many cases budget cutbacks mean arts education cutbacks. This limited amount of resources often forces administrators to place a value on the various subject areas. There is always a demand for greater concentration upon the traditional basics: English, math, science, and history. There is also a new focus on computer competency and a renewed focus on the need for foreign language education. Add to this health education, family life education, industrial arts education, AIDS education, home economics, physical education, and business education and one begins to wonder where arts education fits in.
Art and its education are crucial in the development of young children. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to ensure that our young children are being taught about art and its education in order for them to be successful contributing members of society. June Vail, a professor of dance at Bowdoin College explains, “The arts bring energy and creativity, a kind of learning that can only enhance every other kind of learning. (Vail).” She continues by saying that, “The enterprise of a liberal arts education is integrative, to educate students to be creative and flexible, to harness their energy in a different way (Vail).” Art begins to lay the foundation of success early for young children by developing their motor skills through paining with a paintbrush and drawing with crayons. Furthermore, it also helps promote language development by learning new shapes, colors, and allows them to describe their artistic creation. Lastly, it also helps children improve academically. A report that was done by the Americans for the Arts demonstrates that young people who participated regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, participate in a math or science fair, or win an award for writing an essay as opposed to students who do not participate in the arts (PBS). Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
I want art to be taken seriously because it is helpful to children’s way of thinking and problem solving that can help in all subjects and way of life. Subjects from math to English have already incorporated art in their teachings by doing hands on projects that better help the students understand the material, so I think that art should do the same as well. My goal as an art teacher is to inform my students about their environment and various cultures around them, let my students explore the possibilities in art careers and show them how art can help them become better problem
While I was nervous at first, the students warmed up to me and I felt comfortable. Going to a classroom every day is something I look forward to, and this experience put that into perspective a little more. I know teaching is just as challenging as rewarding, and I’m ready to take that on. I learned several classroom tips from my cooperating teacher. He was knowledgeable about the subjects, and I was able to take away ideas. These ideas, and tips will be used in my classroom. As for MoSEP standards, I consider my strengths; Standard #2 Student Learning, Growth and Development, Standard #5 Positive Classroom Environment, Standard #6 Effective Communication, and Standard #8 Professionalism. I figured these as my strengths, because they are what I focused on while in the classroom. I think these standards are important to students’ learning, and they are something that I didn’t have trouble accomplishing. While I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge through this experience, I still have a lot to learn. I need improvement in lesson planning. Lesson planning is a big portion of teaching, and it’s something that you’ll never stop doing. I also need to learn how to deal with parents. Doing Junior Achievement I didn’t have to interact with parents, so that’s something that I’ll need to come in contact with at some point. I would like to improve in teaching techniques. ...em to find other ways of expressing their thoughts. Arts classes are important and should be an essential in our society. Being artistic and creative can help students be who they are and stand out. It can help them use their knowledge and come up with extraordinary ideas to make big changes in the world, and it can also keep students away from bad things and be better human beings by doing what they are interested in.
Collaborative and cooperative learning promotes student learning through group-oriented activities. Collaborative learning is a method of teaching and learning in which student teams will work together to create a meaningful multimedia project. Cooperative learning, which will be the primary focus of this paper, is a specific kind of collaborative learning. In cooperative learning, students work together in small groups on a structured activity. Cooperative groups will work face-to-face and will learn to work as a team. The multimedia project will allow all students to benefit from gaining a deeper knowledge of the multimedia matters through communication with their peers and building relationships among their peers of different ethnic, backgrounds, learning abilities and gender.
There is one question that I had at the beginning of the school year that I feel I have answered. I kept asking myself if I would be ready to lead a class as a student-teacher by January. I do not know if I will make few or many mistakes, if I will find the experience exhilarating or overwhelming, or if the students will cry or cheer when I leave. I do know that I am ready to try and I will welcome whatever comes in the student teaching experience. I am anxious to implement theory, try out my ideas, and move to the next level of teaching where the stakes, and the pay-offs, are so much greater.
Cooperative learning is learning that occurs when students work in small groups to help each other learn (educational psychology). Throughout my years in the U.S. educational system, I have taken part in cooperative learning system. At times, I have found that it works very well each group member contributes information to the project or the worksheet and we learn off of each other. Other times, I have found that cooperative leaning doesn’t work. I will go in to more detail about why the cooperative learning does and does not work later in this paper. First, I would like to go in to more detail about what cooperative learning is.
