I currently work for Bank of America and I am being looked at for a leadership position. I was invited to go to a presentation that was given by Marjorie Nichols over conflict resolution. I choose to attend this presentation because not only does this topic help me with my career at Bank of America but it will also aid me in my future career as a PR agent. Conflict resolution is a topic that can be applied to any field so I felt like it would be a great subject to right about and also learn something new.

When Marjorie started the presentation she posted the objectives on the screen which I think is a great way to start off the presentation. It is a great way to give the audience something to evaluate once the presentation has been concluded. After the objectives were given we took a deeper dive into the “meat and Potatoes” of the presentation. We were given the basics on how to resolve conflict for each personality type. Not only did we go into each personality type but we also went into the sub categories of those personalities. This was a great way to keep in organized and concise. There were a couple of things that didn’t go well during the presentation. Firstly, I work in a call center for the bank so it is very hard to stop in the middle of speaking to customers to go into a meeting. Since Marjorie has given multiple presentations at this call center before I thought that the documents would be in a more accessible location especially for the late comers. Instead these documents were placed on a table right behind her (the speaker) and in the way of the PowerPoint. This was a big distraction to both the audience and the
Her slow yet concise way of speaking, coupled with easy to follow transitions allowed for a speech that was enjoyable to listen to. Her use of examples from her personal life allowed her audience to get a picture of who she was if they did not know, and allowed her to better relate to them by provided examples of how she is related to the college they are graduating from. Her reference to many modern political problems allowed her to bring up her important role as an activist and facilitated further understanding from the audience. While some areas of her speech were weak, such as the longer than needed pauses and her lack of consistent eye contact, to a few points where she didn’t speak clearly enough, the overall picture that was her speech was fairly strong. Looking at this speech, I hope to incorporate some aspects that I failed to include in my previous speeches. Some of these include her use of hand gestures to emphasize and exaggerate certain phrases and topics, and her combined use of appeals. While my initial thoughts going in were “This is boring” and “This is too slow”, it evolved into me wanting to hear more, and overall my defeat in the beginning turned into a victory at the
Desmond Tutu says “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” Scout, main character of the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Skeeter, main character of the movie The Help by Tate Taylor, both demonstrate their agreement to this statement in different ways. To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in the 1930s during the Great Depression and Jim Crow laws. Discrimination and prejudice thrives in the small, Southern town in which Scout lives. This exposes her to these things, and her reactions show her moral beliefs. On the other hand, The Help takes place in the 1960s in Mississippi where racism and segregation are the building blocks of society. Skeeter

With parts of the context missing the way in which the speaker delivered the speech could have helped distract from those flaws. For instance within her attention getter she jumped for one of the slogans, which gave the appearance that she was really into the speech, but then giggled about it for a few seconds. This made the audience wonder about the seriousness to come. Throughout the entire speech hand gestures were nonexistent. The speaker did however change the pitch of her voice frequently. The first time was when the speaker asked the audience what the car keys meant, and then again when the slogans were restated. Another flaw in the delivery was the amount of time she spent looking at the notecard. The speaker had two green notecards, which both were covered completely. She was constantly looking down reading the notecards. In turn there were many unneeded pauses. Those pauses were not impactful ones either, but just a quiet whole while the speaker was reading. Following most of the pauses was um, ah, so, but,or you know. The filler words took away from the message the speaker was trying to get across. Overall the words used throughout were easy to understand, but sometimes a little bit repetitive. For instance she used plethora twice about 10 seconds apart. The speaker did however look the part. She had on a pair of slacks with a sweater. By looking professional it gave some automatic respect. Overall the

I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).

Negative conflict occurs when voices are not expressed appropriately, discussions are not in control or different parties reject moving forward with a solution. There is difficulty resolving disagreements because there are multiple reactions to disputes. However, a positive conflict supports debates without a destructive outcome. They improve communication, introduce principles that are important to others, and reduce chaos. In order of being able to analyze the sources of conflicts regarding the clothing manufacturer, I will present the Conflict Process Model according to McShane and Von Glinow. Therefore, I will first define what conflicts are, and second present the different sources of conflicts and carve out which conflicts are involved regarding to the given case. The third step is to explain two different strategies to minimize these conflicts in future. Finally, I will provide a recommendation and conclusion.
