Effectively communicating through writing is extremely important in any career. I have recently been hired by the City of Yakima as a law enforcement officer where written communication is imperative for my line of work. Writing clearly and coherently is something law enforcement officers are required to do because most often it will be used in court proceedings. If I am unable to write effectively the defense attorneys can use that as a way to discredit my performance as an officer and therefore could cause issues for the prosecuting attorney. Over the course of the semester I was taught how to do peer reviews and reflective commentary at the end of each unit. I have written a few papers that my peers have evaluated me on. Peer reviews …show more content…
What was new this semester was the peer review process, as I was not used to evaluating my peers essays. There is a lot that goes into the revision process and providing feedback that will help my peer improve their writing skills. My first peer review I did, I did not feel confident about the remarks I made. I was worried that I provided feedback that would hinder my peers writing and give feedback that was not necessary at all. As the semester went on I was able to understand what changes need to be revised in my peers essays based on our textbook. I know that I am not an expert in written communication, so I am sure I missed a few things that my other peers may have picked up. But that is the beauty of the peer review process in this course, we have few sets of eyes and ears that can evaluates ones …show more content…
Now that we are at the end of the semester, I have seen some big improvements in my own writing process. At the start of the semester I was barely able to write more then four paragraph. This was due to my critical thinking skills. Critical thinking as one of the most important thing a writer can have. Being able to critical think is one aspect of my writing that I have always struggled with. Having taken this course, I have learned how to improve my critical thinking skills and get past the typical four to five paragraph
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
In general, I like this course because it taught me a lot of great things, such as how to revise the essay in order to make it better. My writing has improved a lot throughout this year, I learned how to organize my essay’s structure, using the transition sandwich to perfect my writing. In the future, I hope to continue developing all the skills that I learned in this English class, and I will continue to go to the Writing Center to ask for help to perfect my writing. However, it is the end of the year, but it does not mean that this is the end of my writing.
I believe this semester helped my writing, and I think that is clear from the progression through each paper. When writing my first paper “A Rhetorical Analysis of Juan Enriquez’s Ted Talk” I felt unconfident in my skills as a writer, as they hadn’t been used for around a year. It shows unfortunately in the overall quality of the piece, and I remain unsatisfied with it. I was unsure of the concepts I was trying to argue, and the points I was trying to make, and having to analyze a video proved to be a difficult task for me. As a whole I think the paper shook me at the beginning of the semester and impacted the quality of my notes (Or lack there of), and my course attendance.
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
Throughout this course, we had multiple assignments that were aimed at improving us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning. Our weekly craft lessons have introduced us to multiple writing strategies. These strategies have helped turn my papers from elementary papers that were written below my expected grade level to papers more on par with my peers.
I am a qualified solicitor and in this role I have developed my communication skills. On one occasion I was representing a mother who was a victim of domestic violence. The father wanted to see his children but the mother was not allowing it due to the domestic violence. I acknowledged her concerns regarding the contact and explained that I understood why she would not want contact to take place. I also explained to the mother the courts view in terms of contact and domestic violence cases. I highlighted the fact that if she allowed contact without going to hearing she would still retain a level of control. I suggested that contact take place at a neutral location and be supervised by a friend or family member until she was comfortable with this arrangement. The client was reluctant but highlighted that the court would want some form of contact and she would have to adhere to this. However, by reaching an agreement outside of court she is not bound by it and will be in control. The client agreed to
As a strong math, science and engineering student, writing has not come easy to me and by taking this class, I was hoping to become a stronger writer. Throughout the semester, organizing ideas in logical ways has become straight forward thanks to the peer discussions and review I have had. Before this class, I struggled to transition between ideas and discuss each idea in a logical sequence and, unfortunately, my language arts and history grades suffered as a result. By exuding effort and receiving guidance, my hope was to improve my writing and prepare myself for the college writing which would be
After taking this course, this has been a struggling journey. I did not find fun in this class due to the grade I have now as a result. My writing skills did not improve from high school, losing confidence in myself to create well-written, interesting papers. However, this class has given me ideas about new styles of writing. Having done these papers helped me to discern the qualifications to write a rhetorical analysis essay from a visual critique paper. Here is how my experience in College Writing went.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
My portfolio will demonstrate the skills and writing techniques I have developed and honed while taking the course English 1010 at the University of Memphis. Some of the techniques and skills I have learned include how to write with different persuasive strategies on the audience and how to incorporate critical thinking into my work. As well as these skills I have learned how to apply an effective composing process to my writing and have fine tuned my writing abilities. Writing with different styles on different topics has improved the way I approach writing papers. These styles helped me learn quickly, therefore making me a better writer and student at the same time.
On the surface, comedy and tragedy seem to be complete polar opposites of each other. In terms of the actual narrative, examining the consequences of the character's actions reveals the biggest contrast. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus' 'sin' of not listening to the Gods and trying to avoid his fate assisted in his downfall. Not only does his internal blindness result in him marrying his mother; it also results in a "plague" across his land. In addition, the blindness towards his own fate causes Oedipus to display a decidedly unkingly side when he accuses Kreon of being the source of the woes of the state. The consequences of Oedipus' actions result in his exile from the state and an unhappy ending to the play. In contrast, a key facet to the comedy genre is a lack of consequences. Oberon, for example, never faces any type of punishment when he deceives Titania. In fact, he is rewarded with being back in Titania's good graces and the young boy!
Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
While viewing The Conversation I was struck by the quality sound design. As we previously watched Gravity weeks prior it became clear why a movie like that would need many sound engineers to balance all the special effects one would get in an IMAX theatre. However, this feature goes in depth about Harry who is a Bugger, one who records people’s conversations or sounds, such as a private investigator. His job is to record others conversations and not ask questions from his employer. To capture the reality and impact of a story, sound technicians must manipulate the dialogue with any background or source music to flow naturally. As audience members, we do not recognize the complexity and extreme measures sound editors go to in order to capture everyday sounds of background noises and/or to highlight specific aspects of the world the character may be experiencing with more focus. When I think of films with great sound design, I usually think of the action or adventure genres. Although The Conversation is not an action film, it exudes a powerful sound design that is quite impressive. The sound is greater than you could expect, or maybe even notice, on an initial viewing. The storyline allows its main character, played by Gene Hackman, to act as an on-screen sound mixer.
I have never really had any kind of formal writing class at all. This was quite intimidating when I started but I decided to make the best out of it and I really learned a lot. I learned how to plan, write, research, edit, discuss, layout a paper. I didn’t realize what it takes to have a good paper. I was impressed with even the others in class how their papers had improved as the course went along from where we started. I have come full circle as a writer. I’m far from perfect my punctuation is questionable at times and my transitional phrases need work as well as some of my sentence structure in places. I can honestly say I’m a better more aware writer than when I started. I found out I like to write and writing seems to flow well from me. I never realized this before starting this course. It will help me with my career because people don’t respect someone that writes poorly with poor grammar and poor thought on what they are writing. People are impressed with a well written paper. I feel a well written paper lets your intellectual side shine. I found peer reviews most useful because it allowed me to learn from others. I always feel you must be open to others opinions and thoughts if you are not you can’t learn
