I believe this semester helped my writing, and I think that is clear from the progression through each paper. When writing my first paper “A Rhetorical Analysis of Juan Enriquez’s Ted Talk” I felt unconfident in my skills as a writer, as they hadn’t been used for around a year. It shows unfortunately in the overall quality of the piece, and I remain unsatisfied with it. I was unsure of the concepts I was trying to argue, and the points I was trying to make, and having to analyze a video proved to be a difficult task for me. As a whole I think the paper shook me at the beginning of the semester and impacted the quality of my notes (Or lack there of), and my course attendance. However moving into the second paper I decided that I needed to make changes to the way I approached the course. I began attending class regularly and, aside from the travel day before break, didn’t miss a single class after my stint of absences. I think that greatly improved the quality of my second paper, and I feel I was able to articulate my position and argue my ideas far more clearly as a result. My second paper “The Right to Die, who’s really making the choice?” shows a clear improvement over the first paper in terms of style and writing, as well as understanding the concepts

I’ve found that trying to write my thoughts down when I’m stressed actually helps a great deal with being able to calm down and focus, and I think that will probably be the most useful thing I learned from the course. Being able to articulate the ideas in my head and translate them to paper keeps me focussed on the importance of using my own thoughts to argue something rather than blankly giving facts and research data. Overall I hope I can maintain this skill outside of the class, want to use it for future improvements within my academic
Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez were civil rights leaders who fought for the rights of people facing oppression in America in the mid 20th century. King attempted to end the segregation of African-Americans, and Chavez worked to improve conditions for migrant farmworkers, who often lived in terrible conditions earning below minimum wage. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was supporting the rights of black sanitary public works employees. Following King’s assassination, Chavez gave a speech honoring King, with the purpose of convincing his audience to put King’s views into practice by boycotting California grapes and fighting oppression.
By using diction and repetition, Cesar Chavez emphases the need to use nonviolence during moments of injustice. The rhetorical choices made in this argument draw forth feelings of understanding and cause the readers to think deeper into Chaves' point of view. The purpose is to carry a message that shows the power of nonviolence and what it brings to the world. People quickly follow the straight, bloody path of force and violence, rather than thinking deeper in search for the winding yet cleaner path. As human beings, we crave the freedom and power we believe was bestowed upon us by God. We will fight tooth and nail, even threw the deaths of many, in order to achieve these trivial things.
Cesar Chavez published an article in a religious magazine on the tenth anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death. Chavez’s message is delivered with a humble yet serious tone, as he shows compassion in his writing to emphasize his purpose, which is to bring attention to the importance of non-violent acts over violent acts, and to overall strive to gain the support of his audience, which generally those devoted to helping those in need. The persona of the author helps the audience create a stronger connection with and be further persuaded by Chavez because the audience can infer that he has experienced and is a strong supporter himself of nonviolence by the use of his examples and his points of view. Lauren Zalaznick’s Ted Talk: The Conscience of Television is descriptive and explanatory as she incorporates the idea that televisions have a conscience. The speaker explains how television reflects the moral, political, social, and emotional need our nation. Zalaznick gets into the topic of evolution in order to show how human beings are separated from the animal kingdom simply because we love to be entertained.
Today there are many defects acquiring as well as up rising in the academic field as teachers and parents alike teach a student and aid the needs these students need. The entire Ted talk is presented by RSA animation an interesting format not at all the usual Ted presentation. As well as not the only Ted presentation, Sir Ken Robinson has presented. As Sir Robinson conveys his thoughts and studies his words guide the animation in a very impressive visual. Sir Robinson will be conversing about three troubling trends: rising drop-out rates, schools' dwindling stake in the arts, and ADHD. RSA animation successfully presented a visual presentation simple and complicated at the same time that vividly guides the viewer on a journey with Sir Ken Robinson as the tour guide.
A TED Talk video is spreading ideas in a speech that takes about eighteen minutes or less.In a TED Video, the speaker uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, to persuade their audience to believe them.Ethos is an ethical appeal (credibility), convincing the audience that the speaker is someone worth them listening to.Pathos is when the speaker uses emotions to persuade their audience.Logos is when the speaker uses reasoning and common sense to get to their audience.
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
Death’s Waiting list was an article written by Sally Satel and published by the New York times on May 15, 2006. While using a strong title to grab one’s attention it brings to light the important subject of organ donations. However, even though the author has credibility since she was a receiver of organ the author doesn’t use it wisely. Sally Satel is dis crediting herself by making claims that are false. Also, she makes herself seemed biased and ignorant in the fact that she mocks profound ethnics committees. Furthermore, with Sally Satel making bold false predictions about the future, not providing evidence to back up claims, and in some instances guessing numbers her argument cannot be valid.
Meaghan Ramsey believes in business growth that stems from real social change. She has origins in nutritional science and has worked across FMCG and multiple organizations dealing with media, charities, and pharmaceuticals. Ramsey was also the Global Director of the Dove Self-Esteem Project at Unilever in London. Her TED Talk, “Why Thinking You’re Ugly Is Bad For You” occurred in September of 2014 at TED@Unilever in London. The audience that Ramsey is trying to target is the parents of young men and women who are struggling or may begin to struggle with body image/low self-esteem. She speaks to the parents directly about what can be done to minimize the use of the internet and social media at such a young age. Ramsey’s talk is affected by the audience in the sense that she uses
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
