Touchstone Reflection Paper
As I reflect on the entire courses that I have taken to obtain my degree, there are several courses that stand out including the Bridge Course taught by Professor Pamela Rankey, Applied Writing taught by Dr. Sonja Andrus, Interpersonal Connections in the workplace taught by
Dr. Amber Peplow and this Capstone Course taught by Professor Wise. I am including the names of the professors because I feel they each contributed a specific teaching style and their input in these courses had a direct effect on how I learned from them each individually. All these courses I have completed were touchstones to my learning. Each had individual sections of learning that excelled me to the next level.
I am enrolled at UC Blue Ash and my experiences and relationships to the courses that I will be writing about will reflect the Blue Ash campus. I like the UC Clermont College and am fortunate to take the summer courses here but since I live in Indiana it is just too far to drive here. I was very fortunate to be able to take most of the courses at the Blue Ash campus.
There are a few other courses that have stood out in my educational experience. The first is Applied Supervision taught by Professor Stan Adams. In this course we learned about supervision and mid-level management. Professor Adams’s take on this course and his personal experiences with employee management really made the course enjoyable. He had real experience on how the business world is and he knew what we, as students, needed to look for in our work environment.
I am currently a mid-level manager and to move forward in my organization I need to obtain a four-year degree. I was able to directly use what I was learning in this course in my work relat...

...he would be a great help in the design on the courses that the students should be involved in. Professor Adams is why I joined this college program and I cannot thank him enough. His style of teaching connected with my learning style very well. I entered this program to learn from professors like him. He was a great influence on my decision to start back to school and he explained the program to me that related to my career that I am in.
The Two plus Two program has been a huge opportunity for continuing education students. I am very grateful that UC offers such a program and one that really falls into my line of work. I hope to see this program continue and more and more future students enroll into the BTAS program. I also hope to see the program continue to follow mid-level managers in their careers and choose courses that will relate to their types of managem
Schools, especially Harvard, provide excellent foundations for education for young men and women all over the country. Henry Adams, unfortunately, is a weak, rich, Bostonian who failed to pick up any leadership qualities in school and feels it is necessary to blame the school and not himself. Besides Adam's weak character it is his upper class status that deludes his philosophies of education. Adams never earned anything on his own. His acceptance to Harvard and his nomination to Class Orator were not based on his hard work or motivation.
I found this case study particularly interesting; in retrospect this class would have been extremely helpful prior to starting my husband’s business. I now see the importance of having a clear financial plan and projection, along with a strong command of your market share. My husband and I have been able to muddle through the areas were did not know or understand in running a business, but prior knowledge would have been a valuable
I left this course with the skills I can take advantage of in the future. Mrs.Cohen had been to college, therefore, she was able to give tips and tricks on how to survive college. If anyone had a concern, she would give them advice to help them. She offered her time after class to anyone who would want to sit down with her and chat about future plans so she could guide them. Mrs.Cohen made me feel she actually cared about each and every one of us. Classmates and I were all provided with college and scholarship information and anything needed to succeed in applying for college. She was willing to lend an ear to any complaints made. She is a large reason to why this class impacted me a great deal. She openly embraced and expressed her true self without being ashamed of it and I loved it. It felt as she could relate and understand the
Pericles’ statement, “A woman’s reputation is highest when men say little about her, whether it be good or evil,” reflects a common attitude towards women’s activities in ancient Greek society. Ancient Greece fostered a demeaning role for women restricting their level of education, choice in marriage, and enforcing strict social norms. However, persuading shreds of evidence suggest that some Greek females did participate in athletic competitions alongside men, primarily at religious ceremonies as they advanced toward maturity. Women’s participation in sports is a somewhat recent social phenomenon, and acceptance of that participation by cultures worldwide is an even more recent phenomenon.
Before this course I had ample leadership experience starting from a young age with organized sports and most recently in military service, while I had a lot of time to hone a particular type of leadership style which was almost exclusively geared toward leading rough and tough young men. I soon learned that in this field that I would need to vary my leadership styles and methods because if I used my usual methods on a student
When we go to work every day we all have to face co-workers that just get under our skin. It can be for a number of different reasons, they are too loud, they complain too much, they are not doing their job, or they are just breathing when they come in in the morning, whatever the case maybe at one point or another everybody has experienced these things. However, we are not perfect either so we may be that person in the office that most people secretly hates because we do any number of things and we just do not realize it. It is important to take this fact into consideration when you begin to dislike your co-workers and before addressing an issue with them or the supervisor you should affirm with yourself that it is not actually
Many of my instructors, such as a high school teacher I had for both honors Chemistry and Physics reminded me of the teacher from the television show, Charlie Brown, simply droning on with no discernable enthusiasm or interest in the subject. These teachers taught classes that I invariably found “unbearable” as there was no thinking or experimentation required on my part. However the classes I excelled in always brought new variables to the table, and combined with an interesting subject invariably held my attention for the semester and beyond. Two instructors come to mind from my 15 years of education, and both due to the different, and often interesting approaches they took to
During the years getting the degree, I would be able to develop key skills such as good communication skills, good team worker and listing skills. As I would have to talk to different people, attend lectures, activities and group work might be involved which gives me the opportunity to use and develop these skills.
Interpersonal Relationships are one of the most important things in business and everyday life. A positive interpersonal relationship provides countless opportunities while a negative interpersonal relationship limits opportunities. Interpersonal relationships can be built with many different forms of communication but self-concept and self-disclosure play two of the biggest roles in forming positive interpersonal working relationships.
In my college career, I have had many classes that provided inspiration and personal growth but the two that stands out at this time are psychology and the Bible as literature. In psychology, I specifically enjoyed learning about research and theories regarding human growth and change across the lifespan. This class helped me understand why and how children develop. The Bible as literature was interesting and I learned things I had not known. This class confirmed that when I need to, I can turn to proverbs for
Managerial communication and skills is the subject that needs to be legitimately comprehended and consolidated into each organization. I accept that working ordinarily for an organization might be some piece of life, however fit to deal with our work with successful correspondence and aptitude is an Art of Living. I can certainly say that this course at Sullivan had provided for me sufficient chance to consider different viewpoints that I have been taking a shot at a regular schedule at my work place. It additionally helped me enhance each part of it. It is said that take in while you take in and play while you play, then again, my work style is to play while I take in (taking in gets to be so natural) and this could be accomplished through solid crucial learning in Managerial communication and skills.
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
My interest in Harvey Mudd began with my love of engineering and liberal arts, but I was ultimately hooked by the teachers. They genuinely care for their students and approach each class with great thought. I attended a materials science class where the professor inserted practice problems into her lecture. This gave everyone the opportunity to check their understanding and ask for help. I appreciated that the professors I saw were not rushing through the material. Instead, they welcomed questions, which perfectly fits my learning style. They were brilliant and engaging, and I was inspired by every
Taking this class this semester has really changed the way that I have viewed myself when it has come to work and the different companies that I have worked before. I have taken a psychology class before but I have never taken one that relates to management and organizations. This class has really helped me answer different questions such as why I was unhappy at some jobs, enjoyed some managers over others, and what motivated me to work hard at jobs. It’s good to learn that there are different terms and definitions for different feeling and things I experienced at jobs to know that their other people experiencing these things also. I will be going into a management position after I graduate, and this class helped me to learn many different ways to go about managing and things to avoid to keep a positive working environment.
...urse of this module will be extremely beneficial for my future. If I am to have the opportunity to become part of the managerial sector within the IT industry, I believe I will be more confident and have better listening skills. After this course, I have now clearly identified my strengths and weaknesses and identified opportunities and threats that they provide. Hopefully, if I apply the knowledge I have gained from the course, and apply it to the working world, I will be able to handle situations with more confidence, and show much more calamity and assertiveness. NLP can also be used more effectively when communicating with others. After the continuous and consistent team work available throughout this module, I believe management is a more suitable career option for me. As can be seen previously, effective communication is only achieved with constant practise.
