I completed my arts integration experience at Isanti Intermediate School/School for all Seasons. I was able to complete 15-20 hour observation in a kindergarten class with approximately 20 students’ and I was also able to spend time in the music specialist classroom. I was able to observe kindergarten, first grade, third grade, fourth grade, and a fifth grade sections in the music class. Each section had approximately 20-25 students. The students’ were a group of diverse learners who came into the classroom with different learning abilities, needs, and experiences.
Subject Matter
As I reflect on the Concordia University Conceptual Model for Teacher Education in regards to subject matter and my observation, I discovered that arts integration is not currently occurring in the classroom, but rather arts enhancement is being practice. There were many art projects;

I learned many great tricks, tips, and examples of being an effective teacher in the elementary setting. I learned though this experience that arts integration is such an important part to our students’ academic success and that there is a need for teachers’ to grab on to the arts and integrate them into daily instruction. I am no longer afraid of the arts and I will confidently start with baby steps. I hope to become the teacher that students’ remember because I brought the arts, the theatre, etc. into their world. I want to make them to be confident and not apprehensive of drawing, painting, acting, creating, etc. I learned from some awesome teachers during this clinical; however, I learned that there is great need for teachers who are willing to step outside of the box of the traditional disciplines and include arts integration into the classroom. I learned that arts integration is more than just a craft or a decoration! I hope to influence others and inspire others to teach arts integration rather than arts
Do you ever just sit back and wonder how many images run through your brain everyday and thinking back on that how many of those were images from our society’s pop culture? With our ever growing technology and media of our society, children are constantly being exposed to visual stimuli. Paul Duncum, a professor of art education, studies how these stimuli not only affect our students and children but also how we can incorporate them into the art classroom in an effective way. In this paper I will illustrate to you the life and work of Paul Duncum. I will be talking about Duncum’s contributions to art education, his teaching philosophy, and how I can use his beliefs and teachings in my future as an art educator but first I would like to give you some background on Paul Duncum.

I have played an intrinsic role in my school’s band and orchestra department through helping organizing performances, teaching classes, and tutoring individuals. On a regular basis, I am responsible for directing and teaching classes including beginning band, with grades ranging from fourth to twelfth, and more advanced ensembles like concert band and marching band. I also play an important role in their performances sometimes by directing and other times by contacting venues to organize dates and times for the shows. All around the United States, art programs are being cut out of the budget in public schools. The arts include dance, band, chorus, theatre, film, drawing, painting, photography and literary arts. Some school board members feel these art programs are not necessary and do not benefit the students in any way. Elementary, middle, and high school students are forced to quit their passion and feel that their talents are not supported by their schools. Although many are not aware, there is a strong connection between arts education and academic achievement. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts in many public schools, the art classes are first on the list to be cut. It is important that the students, parents and teachers fight for their desire to keep the arts in public schools. Art programs in public schools are essential to the development of young minds; therefore the school boards should enhance and improve the programs and should not cut funding or force a class to be discontinued.
Art is intended for all to enjoy and learn from. Through an art curriculum; phonics, mathematics, and readiness skills to name a few can be learned through an art curriculum. With this curriculum a teacher can adapt that centers to teach those with diverse abilities such as emotional and intellectual challenges, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and orthopedic impairments.
Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student’s grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution to student’s learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). There is no doubt that a cut in funding for art programs will take a huge toll on students overall grades and test scores. Research has found that the studying of music and art facilitates learning in other subjects and enhances children’s skills in other areas (Brown). Furthermore, providing students with a creative outlet can do great justice in reducing the stress from many other classes and even offer insight for students in possible career paths involving the art field. The art industry today currently supports 4.1 million full-time jobs (Dorfman). By increasing the funding of music and art programs for students preschool through twelfth grade we can see a dramatic increase in the education of children across the United States, assist with skill development in young students, and greatly benefit the economy at the same time.
I’ve been playing music since before I knew how to pronounce the word “music.” I started off with just a toy xylophone playing a song I made up for my mom’s friend, Meagan. That was how the “seed” was planted. Since then, my passion for music has grown. My parents and I have been watering that seed with piano lessons, learning from great musicians, playing in the school band, as well as other methods. Now, Idyllwild Arts Academy seems like the greatest opportunity for me to grow and learn even more. I believe that this school will give me what I need to go farther musically as well as academically.

Art and its education are crucial in the development of young children. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to ensure that our young children are being taught about art and its education in order for them to be successful contributing members of society. June Vail, a professor of dance at Bowdoin College explains, “The arts bring energy and creativity, a kind of learning that can only enhance every other kind of learning. (Vail).” She continues by saying that, “The enterprise of a liberal arts education is integrative, to educate students to be creative and flexible, to harness their energy in a different way (Vail).” Art begins to lay the foundation of success early for young children by developing their motor skills through paining with a paintbrush and drawing with crayons. Furthermore, it also helps promote language development by learning new shapes, colors, and allows them to describe their artistic creation. Lastly, it also helps children improve academically. A report that was done by the Americans for the Arts demonstrates that young people who participated regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, participate in a math or science fair, or win an award for writing an essay as opposed to students who do not participate in the arts (PBS). Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
