Reflection About Arts Integration Experience

I completed my arts integration experience at Isanti Intermediate School/School for all Seasons. I was able to complete 15-20 hour observation in a kindergarten class with approximately 20 students’ and I was also able to spend time in the music specialist classroom. I was able to observe kindergarten, first grade, third grade, fourth grade, and a fifth grade sections in the music class. Each section had approximately 20-25 students. The students’ were a group of diverse learners who came into the classroom with different learning abilities, needs, and experiences.
Subject Matter
As I reflect on the Concordia University Conceptual Model for Teacher Education in regards to subject matter and my observation, I discovered that arts integration is not currently occurring in the classroom, but rather arts enhancement is being practice. I learned many great tricks, tips, and examples of being an effective teacher in the elementary setting. I learned though this experience that arts integration is such an important part to our students’ academic success and that there is a need for teachers’ to grab on to the arts and integrate them into daily instruction. I am no longer afraid of the arts and I will confidently start with baby steps. I hope to become the teacher that students’ remember because I brought the arts, the theatre, etc. into their world. I want to make them to be confident and not apprehensive of drawing, painting, acting, creating, etc. I learned from some awesome teachers during this clinical; however, I learned that there is great need for teachers who are willing to step outside of the box of the traditional disciplines and include arts integration into the classroom. I learned that arts integration is more than just a craft or a decoration! I hope to influence others and inspire others to teach arts integration rather than arts
