I’ve been playing music since before I knew how to pronounce the word “music.” I started off with just a toy xylophone playing a song I made up for my mom’s friend, Meagan. That was how the “seed” was planted. Since then, my passion for music has grown. My parents and I have been watering that seed with piano lessons, learning from great musicians, playing in the school band, as well as other methods. Now, Idyllwild Arts Academy seems like the greatest opportunity for me to grow and learn even more. I believe that this school will give me what I need to go farther musically as well as academically.
I want to attend Idyllwild Arts Academy because it will give me the perfect amount of artistic growth and freedom to continue my journey
Stax Music Academy has helped shape the lives of thousands of young people. It is a non-profit school who not only teaches music, but also English, math, etc. Many students have emerged from there to go on to be nationally or even internationally known. (Stax Museaum)
These few weeks will also help me gain a better understanding of how Ringling College of Art and Design treats their students, and I want to see the amount of students who are thriving in the environment on campus. Since I am a junior and am also considering applying to Ringling during my upcoming year this is all very important to me. I also aspire to meet people different from me, meeting people who dare to break the mold society has placed upon them is a huge deal for me. I am hopeful that the environment, along with the students, will help me pursue my major of choice; the school I go to isn’t as much of a creative environment as I am hoping Ringling
Music has always been one of things I excelled in. In elementary school it was required to be in music but second in 5th grade you have the option to be in band. I was in band for 6 years before I stopped and I went to 5 honor bands. I played tenor saxophone and was 2nd chair all six years. Jazz band was something we had in middle school and high school. We had 2 jazz bands in middle school. Jazz one was for 8th graders and jazz two was 7th grade. I played in both. My first year I played tenor 1 and 2 and the second year I played baritone saxophone. My 9th grade year I played only tenor one. We didn’t have to audition but the students who plays that instrument normally would have first say in who gets 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd part. That
Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student’s grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution to student’s learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). There is no doubt that a cut in funding for art programs will take a huge toll on students overall grades and test scores. Research has found that the studying of music and art facilitates learning in other subjects and enhances children’s skills in other areas (Brown). Furthermore, providing students with a creative outlet can do great justice in reducing the stress from many other classes and even offer insight for students in possible career paths involving the art field. The art industry today currently supports 4.1 million full-time jobs (Dorfman). By increasing the funding of music and art programs for students preschool through twelfth grade we can see a dramatic increase in the education of children across the United States, assist with skill development in young students, and greatly benefit the economy at the same time.
Music has always been an important part of my life. Upon entering the fifth grade, my parents bought me a flute, at my insistence. After moderate success playing the flute, I saw greener grass on the other side of the musical fence. Singing just had to be easier than making music with a long metal pipe. My perception and reality did not exactly match. Singing has its own subtleties and complexities which are not readily apparent to the casual observer. Abandoning the flute for singing, I began taking voice lessons in the tenth grade. My voice teacher was very experienced and encouraged me to pursue my interest in music beyond high school. After much deliberation, I decided to major in voice during college. This path would be fraught with unforeseen difficulties and exciting challenges.
In order to help spark that passion inside of others I must accomplish my first goal of obtaining my bachelor 's degree in music education and gaining my teaching endorsement for K-12. I intend on accomplishing this goal by attending the University of Nebraska at Omaha starting the fall semester of 2016. After attending UNO for 4 to 5 years I will begin my search for a high school instrumental music employment opportunity. Once I am employed I will be able to begin fueling the fire of passion in some students.
I want to be part of the wonderful experience of studying in one of the most artistic cities in the world because just like in Washington, I’m going to discover different parts of myself, make new friendships that will last a lifetime and learn about new ways of expressing

In today’s society, people are constantly looking for new ways to have students produce more from their public education. Some argue that more funding is the answer, while others say that better learning facilities will help. Studies recently conducted show that a simple change in the curriculum will produce the outcome that people are searching for. The simple change is music education. Music education has been shown to improve general academic skills as well as social skills in children. If music classes are added to a child’s schedule, they will begin to show an increase in learning that educators are looking for. Get rid of the ideas of more funding and better facilities, all the students need is a simple music course in their everyday lives.
Music is a form of life that has a variety of purposes; even the human mind cannot comprehend them all. It should be considered a need but because of the economy and its hardship it has bestowed upon people, when school budgets tighten, music programs feel the pressure early and brace for a potential beating (Jennings). Our education system should allow children to express themselves through efficacious learning experiences, giving them the opportunity them to get in-touch with, and strengthen, their creativity (Lim and Chung, S60, Terrance). There is no doubt other programs includes this, but when it comes to music, people question its capability and it is considered “not cool”. I visited Findley Elementary School in Des Moines, Iowa on April eighth. Before attending Findley, I had never heard of the Turnaround Arts Program and how schools were using art and music as a way to help improve student learning and test scores. Findley Elementary school is considered a high-needs school because of their consistently low test scores. For this reason, they were eligible for the Turnaround Arts Program which provides art education resources to high-needs schools. At Findley and other Turnaround Arts Programs, teachers incorporate art, music, and drama to connect with students and provide them with an easier way to learn. There are many benefits of art and music education which include improvements in math and reading, reduction in suspensions, and increased attendance. Along with these general benefits, students claim it helps them concentrate more and control their behavior. Since Findley became a part of the Turnaround Arts Program in 2011, they have improved 11.40 percentage points in math proficiency, increased their reading proficiency score by 2.50
The Academy of Art University, has a hundred percent acceptance rate. It is a four year private school that is also the largest accredited private art and design University in the nation. When music education comes to one’s mind, one may think that it only applies when it comes to listening to diverse songs and beating two drum sticks together to the beat of songs. However, there is much more of a deeper meaning to it than that. According to the acclaimed author, J. Yudkin, “Music education is a field of study associated with the teaching and learning of music. It touches on all domains of learning, including the psychomotor domain (the development of skills), the cognitive domain (the acquisition of knowledge), and, in particular and significant ways, the affective domain, including music appreciation and sensitivity. The incorporation of music training from preschool to postsecondary education is common in most nations because involvement in music is considered a fundamental component of human culture and behavior. Music, like language, is an accomplishment that distinguishes us as humans” (Yudkin 4). The subject of expurgating music education has been discussed for numerous decades. However, those discussing this fail to realize that music education not only has an imperative part in the students’ grades improving but also betters their behavior. Music education should remain in the curriculums of today’s students because it has a positive effect on their upbringing, in turn leading them to better, more fruitfulfutures.
However I did not have a big problem being in that class, the only issue was there were no instrument like a keyboard piano. The instrument that I picked was the brass flute since it looked easy to learn. As I continued to practice playing the flute in my Beginning Band class and rehearse after school, I mastered to which keys to press and how to blow properly in the riser. To be able to play at a slow tempo, regular tempo, and swift tempo. As matter of fact, I also learned to work well and play all together with my classmates and my flute partner, Robbie Lee.
