Reducing sugar is the monosaccharide of carbohydrate which is form in aldehyde in the presence an alkaline solution. Examples of reducing sugar are glucose, lactose and glyceraldehyde. The reducing sugars that contain aldehyde group act as reducing agent during oxidation because it will oxidize to carboxylic acid. Benedict solution is used to test the presence of the reducing sugar in the solutions. Benedict solution is made from anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium citrate and copper (ii) sulphate. In this experiment glucose solution is poured into the Benedict solution and let them in the water bath about maximum 2 minutes. From the experiment, we can observe that the blue color solution turn to green and red or dark brown. This change of color refers to the level of the sugar inside the solutions. If there is no reducing sugar inside, the color of the solution remain blue. If there has a little sugar inside, the color changes from blue to green. Glucose is a sugar that plays a big part in a human’s health and well-being. This sugar is a major source of energy for the body’s brain and cells. The Cells that receive energy from glucose help in the building of the body’s muscle and tissue. Although glucose may be important to the body too much of this sugar can cause a chronic condition called Diabetes. Diabetes, also known as Diabetes mellitus, is a chronic condition that is caused by too much sugar in the blood. This condition can affect all age groups. In fact, in 2010 a survey was taken by the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, on the number of newly diagnosed diabetes. Out of 1,907,000 people: 24.38% were ages 20-44, 55.17% were ages 45-64, and 20.45% were ages 65 and greater. Diabetes is a very serious condition, and it can be deadly if left untreated. This paper will help better educate the reader on the signs and symptoms, the testing process, and the management of diabetes.

Portray the scene as follows; a girl is in the third grade just recently diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis. Her world is turned upside down with injections twice a week and pills that make her sick to her stomach daily. The pain in her joints is monumental. Prednisone a steroid used to eliminate joint swelling and pain caused her to gain a significant amount of weight in a rapid amount of time. Subsequently the third grade, this girl has struggled with her weight persistently gaining up into her senior year of high school. Now in college, she has had enough. She decided it was time for a drastic change. In order to lose weight and boost one’s self confidence, college students would be most benefited to explore a diet that lessens carbs, maximizes proteins, and allows healthy weight loss while allowing a person to celebrate personal achievements along the way.
Sugar is one of the most consumed commodities in the world today, and the profits of it are significant. According to Larry Schwartz (2014) “Americans consume 130 pounds of sugar every year” (Schwartz, 2014). We must be acknowledged about how it all started, to appreciate how people lived and how they struggled to provide such a commodity. Sugar was a profitable commodity in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. The cultivation of sugarcane expanded to the United States of America, which brought enslaves from Africa to work on the plantation of sugar during the 17th century. Sugar was known as the white gold for its income, which helped the U.S. to achieve independence from Great Britain. Although sugar has the worst history, it is widely used for nutritional, medical and industrial productions, and sugar manufacturing led to an industrial development and economic growth.
Sugar, a sweet crystalized substance, is a commodity that all of society today has acquired. The uses of sugar in the diet of people today is unlimited. Sugar is used in desserts, drinks, as a decoration, and much more. Sugar can be found in almost everything sold at the local grocery store. In Great Britain, by its first introduction, sugar became a most desirable product. It was the increased use of sugar that led to the increase consumption of tea in the British diet. The British desired tea, which they acquired from trade with the Chinese. The desire for tea is one contributing factor that led to the first Opium war.
Sugar is considered a toxic poison. Sugar leaches the calcium out of the skeletal frame of a human’s body. Sugar literally sucks the calcium straight from our bones; therefore it is known to many as a “skeletal poisonous powder.” There are thousands of individuals struggling throughout the United States with sugar addiction. Sugar is a leading cause of a number of health-related issues. Sugar causes health issues such as, fibromyalgia, diabetes, obesity, and osteoporosis. Like me, many individuals have no clue that they are addicted to sugar. Up until this single subject design, I thought my eating habits were quite normal. I honestly did not realize how much sugar I was taking in everyday. This single subject design has truly encouraged me to live a healthier lifestyle. The purpose of this study is to indirectly determine my sugar intake, by counting calories daily and reducing my caloric intake.
Blood glucose levels are the measurement of glucose in an individual’s blood. This is important because glucose is the body’s main source of fuel and the brains only source of fuel. Without energy from glucose the cells would die. Glucose homeostasis is primarily controlled in the liver, muscle, and fat where it stored as glycogen. The pancreas is also a significant organ that deals with glucose. The pancreas helps regulate blood glucose levels. Alpha-islet and beta-islet pancreatic cells measure blood glucose levels and they also regulate hormone release. Alpha cells produce glucagon and beta cells produce insulin. First is the Benedict’s test for reducing sugars which determines if a carbohydrate contains a free aldehyde or ketone group. When Benedict’s reagent is heated with a reactive sugar the color of the reagent changes. The initial solution color of the Benedict’s regent is sky blue. Depending on the number of available sites for the reaction to occur, the reaction will result in a solution that may range from green to yellow to orange to brick red, a red precipitate may form if more time is allowed. The test will only show a positive reaction for starch if the starch has been broken down to maltose of glucose. ("BIO 1510 Laboratory Manual," 2016)
The Benedict's Test is used to test the presence of simple sugars in a sample. If sugars are present, a color change will occur from blue to red. However, although the Benedict's test shows the presence of sugars, it cannot accurately determine the concentration of sugar in a sample solution. In our method, we added specific concentrations of glucose to the Benedict's test to use as a chart to estimate the glucose concentration of an unknown solution X. Although this gives a rough estimate of the concentration, it is very inaccurate. For example, the mystery solution X was a pale orange color, which was between the colors in my first and second test tube.

This is common and its incidence is rising, 171 million people had diabetes in 2000 it is expected this condition to be doubled in 2030. We are all familiar with sugar. It is sweet, delicious, and addictive; yet only a few of us know that it is deadly. When it comes to sugar, it seems like most people are in the mind frame knowing that it could be bad for our health, but only a few are really taking the moderate amounts. In fact, as a whole population, each and everyone of us are still eating about 500 extra calories per day from sugar. Yes, that seems like an exaggerated number judging from the tiny sweet crystals we sprinkle on our coffee, but it is not. Sugar is not only present in the form of sweets and flavourings, it is hidden in all the processed foods we eat. We have heard about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt, but we know very little about the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. There still isn’t any warnings about sugar on our food labels, nor has there been any broadcasts on the serious damages it could do to our health. In all, low carb diets are not the best solution for weight loss. The health risks involved display a negative impact on the long term health and well being of individuals, and above all is not sustainable. They myths of low carb diets display that these diets are never beneficial for anyone, whether they diet for a short or long period of time. As well, people start living this lifestyle for the wrong reasons. Rapid weight loss is deemed as more important than any health risks involved. Based on all these facts, it can be concluded that living a low carb lifestyle will never promote a persons well being and overall health.
Anything that is used to replace regular sugar, or sucrose, can be considered an artificial sweetener or sugar. Americans are increasingly using artificial sugar. “Fake sugar” is toxic, not just to the body, but to the metabolism as well. Artificial sweeteners were designed to be sugar substitutes as a less fattening alternative because seventy five percent of the population is overweight in United States. These are in the brand names that most people recognize such as Splenda, Sweet One, Equal, Sweet 'N Low, and many more. These artificial sweeteners are all synthetically made in labs and can legally be labeled as 'natural' because it appears somewhere on the Earth, despite it being made in a lab. The reason people use artificial sweeteners in their food is because these products do not add calories to the food. Dieters and people who are aggressively trying to lose weight see this as a golden opportunity to eat something that is just as sweet, but does not contain the calories. Likewise, artificial sweeteners do not need to be used in huge quantities to sweeten something. In fact, it takes much less than regular sugar to sweeten the same product. Perhaps this seems way too good to be true. This would then lead us to investigate the following question: How do artificial sugars affect our body?

Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar. Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. Glucose comes from two different sources, your liver and food. It's also your brain's main source of fuel. Glucose is made and stored in the liver. When your blood sugar gets low then your liver will use the stored glucose to keep your blood sugar level normal. If you have diabetes it means you have too much glucose in your blood. This is where insulin comes in. Diabetes is a growing epidemic in America's many nutritional diseases. There are a few factors that can cause or increase a person's chance of getting diabetes. Poor nutritional choices are a big factor in the cause of diabetes. The sad part is the increase is happening to the young children and teenagers in America. I will talk about what diabetes is, the increase in diabetes and why it’s so high, the complications that follow the diagnosis, and how it can be treated or reduced with diet and exercise.
