The movie starts with Mia, an on-studio barista and aspiring actress, while draving she is distracted by her preparation for an upcoming audition, which led to a moment of road rage between her and Sebastian, a jazz pianist. Her audition was a complete disaster, because her outfit is stained by a coffee spill from her work. At the same time, Sebastian, argues with his sister Laura, because he was having problems paying his bills. That night, Mia's three roommates, trying to cheer her up decide invite her to a party in the Hollywood Hills. After Mia's car got towed, she is forced to walk back to her apartment.

They begin to warm up to each other. Sebastian asks her out to the movies to watch Rebel Without a Cause, she accepts. While getting ready for her date with Sebastian, Greg, (whom she has been dating for a month), shows up for their date. After some time together, Mia and Sebastian move in together. One night, Sebastian is reunited with Keith, a high school classmate, who offers him a chance to be the keyboardist in his jazz band called The Messengers. Sebastian accepts but is horrified when he discovers the band's more pop-oriented sound. Keith lectures him for staying stuck in the past and urges him to move forward with his music. Mia attends one of their first concerts but is left unsettled, knowing that he would never enjoy this type of music. During the band's first tour, Mia confronts Sebastian about this, and he tells her that it's the only way he can make money. Sebastian also criticizes her lack of success as an actress.
