Reading and Censorship of the Harry Potter Novels
J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, which have reached worldwide popularity have an effect on children has not been matched by any other book. The novels have encouraged children to read for entertainment instead of turning to television or video games. When a piece of literature inspires children as the Harry Potter novels do, limiting a child’s access to the novels seems ridiculous. Unfortunately, this is what is happening with Harry Potter. The books are challenged and banned in schools and libraries all over the world because parents contend that the content is unsuitable. The content, which revolves around a world full of wizardry and witchcraft, has some parents actively lobbying against the books. These parents believe the books encourage children to practice witchcraft. Additionally, some parents do not believe that the novels are an asset to the learning development of their children. For most children, Rowling’s Harry Potter novels encourage reading. Not only do children read the massive novels in the series, but also they use the Harry Potter series as conduits to other types of literature because their minds are opened to the wonder of the written word. The novels do not advocate witchcraft or evil, which are often the grounds for censoring the novels from children.
Different features of the Harry Potter series can influence children with both good and bad consequences. She starts her article by describing her first contact with censorship and continues to talk about her experiences as an author with writing her own books being barred. She takes account of her personal views on how to handle topics people feel should be forbidden from children. She also adds that books should open up conversation between parents and their children. Blume states that we should not let fear be a deciding factor on what is right or wrong but rather be informed and educated about the things we fear. She also said , if applied, censorship is a personal choice and government should not decide what is suitable and what is not suitable for everyone else’s children.
Have you ever pictured yourself as a Nazi? Many would immediately deny the claim that they could resemble the traits of one of Hitler’s officers; however, many similarities have been found throughout experimental research. While the 21st century is strides ahead in the area of equality and civil rights, the morality of these times continues to be under question. The majority of this generation would fall victim to the pressures of obedience, persuasion, and conformity. When people become unaware of the effect of these influences, they lose sight of morality and make choices similar to the ones made by Nazis during the Holocaust.
Adolf Eichmann was born in 1906, and died in 1962. Eichmann grew up in Austria and joined the Nazi Party in the year of 1932. Adolf Eichmann headed the Austrian Nazi office for Jewish emigration in 1938. Adolf Eichmann was a German National Socialist official.
The children are the real losers because they are the ones that are not able to read the classic works of literature, which are the backbone of classroom discussions all across the United States. The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) defines censorship as: “The removal, suppression, or restricted circulation of literary, artistic, or educational materials. of images, ideas, and information.on the grounds that these are morally or otherwise objectionable in light of standards applied by the censor” (Miner 1998). In schools there are three types of censorship, one type is a “parent” who doesn’t want their child to read a particular book. Another is a parent, teacher, administrator, or school board member who argues that no one in the class, or school, should read the book in dispute.
Chapter tells stories of kids that dream big but their everyday lives show that there smaller than their own dreams. Children in the poorer areas in America are usually always dreaming about being rich to have what the other side because of their situation they believe that’s what’s going to bring happiness to their lives. Alas, the way they go about it is all wrong or their heart is in the right place but don’t put enough effort in school and give up thus giving up on themselves. In poorer neighborhoods where survival comes first many kids put school second, third, or don’t even concern themselves with it. In the book one school of students had dreams of having all different kinds of occupations, some wanted be lawyers others models and be in sports. The teacher there would instead make them see the real world where if you can’t read or write and have good math skills how could you become any of those things. Students there would barely come to class, never do homework, and even would misbehave for a little attention and at some point even teachers would give up on their students thinking there is no hope for them. In fact, communities don’t have to be like this if there was more unity involved with the community instead of blaming each other then they could all reach a common ground and work together to make a better
Ever since J.K. Rowling first introduced Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1997, children and adults have read and loved the series. It has gained such popularity that all of the books have been made into major motion pictures, and a Harry Potter attraction has been opened in Universal Studios, Florida. Though the readers love Rowling’s intricate and exciting story lines, many controversies have arisen from these stories, not only in the United States, but also in various countries around the world. Perhaps the biggest controversy is the religious implications perceived by some critics. Although these critics believe that the series promotes paganism and encourages evil actions, these theories should not be taken so seriously.
Adolf Hitler was born to Alois Hitler and Klara Polzl in Braunau, Austria in 1889. Hitler's father Alois was an Austrian civil servant. He had a very short fuse and would often beat Adolf. His mother, Klara, had a warmer heart. She greatly encouraged Hitler to do what he wanted. She would often take her son's side when Alois would began a tantrum against Adolf. Hitler told his father he had a dream of becoming an artist. His father did not approve. Alois wanted his son to become a civil servant like himself. When Adolf hit the age of thirteen, his father passed away. Hitler gave up on school and his dream of being an artist when he applied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and was rejected entry. At the age of nineteen, Hitler's mom passed away. He never told her of the devastating news that the school declined him. Hitler soon after joined the military when World War I started. After becoming injured, Hitler began going to the German Workers Party. The party soon realized Hitler's great speaking gift. The German Workers Party changed their name to the Nazi's. They selected Hitler as their leader. Soon millions came to hear Hitler speak. Hitler's power hit an all time high. (Witherbee 1).
We all have gone through troubling times in our life. We have all experienced pain and loss one way or another. The Holocaust was a completely different kind of horror, and Adolf Hitler was the sole cause of World War II and the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a terrible time for the Jewish people of Germany. Hitler had two plans for Germany, the camp life was traumatizing and the aftermath of the Holocaust left Germany both physically and mentally broken.
Censorship in School Libraries The most debatable and controversial form of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Censorship of books in school libraries is neither uncommon nor an issue of the past. Books with artistic and cultural worth are still challenged constantly by those who want to control what others read. The roots of bigotry and illiteracy that fuel efforts to censor books and free expression are unacceptable and unconditional.
The Holocaust is the history of continuing mourning and dismay. It seemed to be no ignition of concern or sympathy to lighten up this dreadful history. The Holocaust was the extermination of six million Jews and millions of other people that fell into the “undesirable” category, including blacks, gypsies, and homosexuals, by the Nazi Party during World War II. By 1945, two out of every three Jews were killed: 1.5 million children were murdered. Holocaust survivor, Abel Herzberg said,” There were not six million Jews murdered; there was one murder, six million times.”

High School, the four finest and roughest years of someone’s life. High School, the years that people remember forever. High School, the friends and memories that one will cherish throughout life. High School, is an exciting experience that carries obstacles, joy, challenges, and memories. Yet, with all of this being said there is certain guidelines to endure secondary school. Surviving high school is not as challenging as one may come to believe. Meanwhile, there are a couple of important topics everybody should know in order to make these four years of their life easier. Therefore, to get through four years of high school there are certain pathways behind it in order to lead to a successful four years.
One of the most read series in all literature is Harry Potter. The seven-book succession has sold over 400 million copies and has been translated into over sixty languages. What is it that makes this series so wildly famous? What is it about the boy who lived that makes frenzied readers flock to their local bookstore at midnight on the day of the release to buy the latest installment? How is a story set in a world that doesn’t exist about wizards, witches, magic, and mystical creatures so popular? The series has been able to earn its spot on the New York Times Bestseller list and has granted author J.K. Rowling multiple awards because it is relatable. It is not the setting or the events in the plot of the story that we relate to. We relate to what Harry, his friends, mentors, teachers, caretakers, and even enemies feel. Harry is in a lot of ways exactly like us. He represents some of the good characteristics that all of us have as well as the bad. The series as a whole, is about one thing that is stressed over and over again in the novels, love. The Harry Potter series is one of the most read sequences of novels because the central theme is love and self-sacrifice, and readers are looking for a novel that shows them just that.
The construction of children’s literature was a gradual process. For a long period of time children’s books were frowned upon. The stories were said to be vulgar and frightening. Adults censored children’s ears to stories of daily life, tales with improbable endings were not to be heard. It was not until the mid 1800s that stories of fairies and princesses began to be recognized. Although children’s literature was accepted, the books were not available for all children. With limited access to education, few public libraries, and the books’ costs, these texts were only available to the middle and high- class. As public education and libraries grew so did the accessibility of books and their popularity. They no longer were considered offensive, but rather cherished and loved by many children. Children’s literature became orthodox and a revolution began, changing literature as it was known.
