Summary and Response My favorite piece of reading material this week is Drawing on Text Features for Reading Comprehension and Composing. It echoes chapter 3, from our Content Area Literacy Instruction textbook. It shines a brief, but rich light on the fact that there is a huge variety of text and media resources available to teachers. The article explains how multimedia publications have the potential to draw students into learning, in ways that textbooks may not. It also mentions that sometimes presenting these different types of reading materials to students can add an additional challenge because students may need to use a new or different reading strategy in order to understand them. Typically the information is not presented as linearly …show more content…
In my opinion, it is important because using trade books exposes kids to the style of reading material they will find in everyday life. Some examples are magazine articles, brochures, short documentary style videos and picture filled “Eye Witness” type books. I agree that these types of short informative pieces, require a different reading approach than textbooks, and do not come with comprehension questions but, they will help kids develop the reading skills to utilize information resources that they will find at the bookstore, at the library and on T.V. I also think that sometimes other books are better than textbooks because when a textbook section ends with a chapter summary it creates a definite stopping point where if kids are just reading a regular book they may be more likely to keep reading on, instead of staying on the assigned …show more content…
This seems like a strange thing to say because from one perspective, textbooks seem like they would make teacher prep very easy since all of the information is one convenient location and technically, the company who published the textbook has made sure that the lessons are complete. But, the problem is that they may also turn some students off. They may, as the article says, “lack depth and perspective.” They may, as in the case of some U. S. history books only present a view shared by one certain ethnic group. Since textbooks are expensive and not replaced yearly, they may not even have the most current information on certain subjects. One interesting thing from the book is also that textbooks often have a readability level that is higher than the grade that they are intended
In the essay titled “How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading” written by John Holt and published in Reading for writers in 2013, Mr. Holt discusses why most children aren’t interested in reading. Mr. Holt spent fourteen years as an elementary school teacher. He believed classroom activities destroy a student’s learning ability. Mr. Holt never let his students say what they thought about a book. He wanted his students to look up every word they didn’t know. People can learn difficult words without looking them up in the dictionary.

Textbooks are not small at all. Carrying heavy things can really damage your back. Then kids might miss school because they had to go to the doctor. Most of the time when you have a textbook it could be outdated. Chromebooks are way lighter and there information is more recent than a textbooks. Kid who are coming from health or gym will be tired. Carrying textbooks will make them more tired. Then they could fall asleep. Stress from being in middle school I know stress. If you grab the wrong textbook , lose your homework and
...s and classrooms should have a wide variety of books available with varying styles of writing and art work. In addition to the books, the children should be given a variety of ways in which to express their thoughts and feelings about these books, either through discussion, writing, or their own art work. I agree because this could only allow children to enjoy reading more and lets them feel like their opinions matter and are appreciated. Having books readily available only increases a child’s desire to read and creates in him or her a love for books that, hopefully, never goes away.
In chapter five of Suitably Modern, Mark Liechty discusses the action of “doing fashion” and how it affects the middle class and consumption in Kathmandu. Chapter five poses the question; what is new and what is not? This concerns the class distinctions and if modernization is actually occurring. The middle class in Kathmandu is claiming its own domain through clothing and ostracizing themselves. The author deems this action as adornment he defines it by stating, “It is used to set individuals and groups apart from some and to signal sameness”. Adornment can be a class distinction but also a gender role distinction. Women practice adornment to be indifferent in their relationships with men. For example women can chose to use flashier make-up which can distinguish a married woman from an unmarried woman. Liechty associates fashion with freedom. Film coming to Kathmandu quickly generated the modernization of fashion and consumption. Films exposed the residents to different types of fashion. Ultimately, the middle class wants its own cultural zone; through fashion and consumption it hopes to completely fit in with one another and still be distinct from other classes.
Textbooks are essential and informative, however it is not the main core value of education. If we truly depend on textbook, our world would be as naïve as natives in colonization era. Schopenhauer provides the difference between reading and thinking. “Reading forcibly imposes on the mind thoughts that are as foreign to its mood and direction” (Schopenhauer, pg. 89) Reading is an escape of reality. It penetrates the mind and alters thinking. “The mind is totally subjected to an external compulsion” (Schopenhauer, pg.89) although reading is prominent, it can impair personal thinking. “That the surest way of never having any thoughts of your own is to pickup a book every time you have a free moment.” (Schopenhauer, pg. 90) When it comes to reading college content, it has no originality. We are attaining our foreign thinking from a text that has been modified thus teach one purpose only and that is to provide facts. We cannot attain wisdom from textbooks. Universities provide textbooks that are a copy of another copy; that is to say, the information is the production of somebodies else’s idea following by, another mans ideas and so on. “All that has ever been taught is a critique of a words and fifty critiques of them as preserved side-by-side and intermingled” (Nietzsche, pg. 187) What can we obtain from a mixtures of words? Well criteria met. It is possible to have our own thoughts and ideas; if we only foreshadow on textbook we will become a textbook itself. “People who pass their lives in reading and acquire their wisdom from books are like those who learn about a country from travel description” (Schopenhauer, pg. 91) we have to obtain our wisdom from our own thoughts and not from what is editing in from of
Perhaps, better choice of books that students can familiarize themselves with would be aid to grab the students attention. Throughout the years in schools, the choice of reading has only become books flustered with similes, metaphors, alliteration etc. As Francine Prose declared, “In fact, less and less attention is being paid to what has been written, let alone how; its become a rarity for a teacher to suggest that a book might be a work of art composed of words and sentences, or that the choice of these words and sentences can inform and delight us.” In other words, not much appreciation is given to the what the book is actually stating or conveying. More attention is being given to unnecessary things such as the authors opinions. For instance teachers think of the students education as only a paycheck, rather than elaborating the meaning of the book which refers to the students education. Teachers have the students discussing why the author has written a certain sentence or in many cases why has the author written particular sentences next to each other. In present day classroom settings, the majority do not pay attention due to the book choice and the few who do are not learning the importance of the story. The majority of english teachers teach the students values through the novels that are being read. For example as Francine Prose preached, “Its
The child is able to develop his/her their own opinion of the book and, from there, aspire to become the best at anything they wish to accomplish. It is because of these books, students will become educated and expand their thought process allowing them to excel in school. Clearly, banning these books in school does not only hinder the child’s ability to learn, but also their ability to see what is actually happening in the world around them. History class itself does not meet the requirements these students need in order to fully grasp what was happening in that era. With the help of these books, students are able understand other eras and recognize the transition of time and ideas. These books do not provoke the child to think a certain way, but, instead, lets the child experience the novel the way they choose to. Instead of banning books, parents should know what their child is exposed to at their schools library or classroom
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Imagine a world without the meaningful lessons from books like The Call of the Wild or The Diary of Anne Frank. Books like these have helped shape our culture and our nation, so how would it impact students if they didn’t have the choice to read them? Students all across the country should have the choice to read the books that they want to even if adults disagree. There are so many books out in the world that have greatly contributed to our society today, such as I Am Jazz, the opening up about being transgender. There are so many novels that have benefit our communities, but are restricted. Students have the right to choose what books they want to read.
Books prove to be a very powerful tool, as they help us to understand the world around us. The world is surrounded by literature everywhere one turns, whether it is a novel in a classroom, a newspaper, or even an advertisement on the side of a bus. The core of our education is based upon books, we are constantly gaining knowledge such as when we learn about history by reading the newspaper or a textbook. Multiple well renowned authors are very influential as they are capable of widening our perception to different aspects of society. Without literature, we would remain ignorant to the world around us.
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
Books vary in different subjects and genres, but no matter how much different they are they all teach beneficial information in many ways. From experiences from real people, to fiction events or just a poem they create teachings. The authors get their teachings out in three ways characters, experiences and morals. They put everything in a story for a reason to somewhat give you an idea what the lesson it be learned from. Books can also influence the decisions we make as humans. Without books we as humans wouldn’t be able to learn as sufficiently.
The 15 years of solitary life, the imprisonment makes people lost personal freedom, but in return he also get ideological freedom. Although this process is very difficult, there is still a person who has finished it. According to the short story“The bet”written by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov in 1889, Chekhov wants to express that reading is priceless, reading can save the heart and soul, so that people can cross the limitations of time and space, to see different world to experience a different life, by using an interesting story about two people,a banker and a young lawyer who make a bet with each other about whether
Furthermore, informational texts found in Reading A-Z talk about different water sources like the Mississippi River where the learner could relate too since the river crosses Minnesota. Part of the assessments done the learner indicated the dislike of reading, but through selective texts of her interest or texts that she could relate and use her background knowledge to engage on the reading would create on her motivation to read. Just as Fisher & Frey (2012) states that few readers read the introduction to know if it the text meets their needs. In order to create engagement on readers, looking at the complexity of a text as a teacher is it vital to maintain the reader joy
